This paper compares the two major respirable dusts size specifications with lung models derived from a recent review using computer simulation in logarithmic normal dust clouds. It was found that either specification gives reasonable reproductibility with respect to either the nose or mouth breathing lung models over the usual range of industrial dust clouds, and either could be chosen as a standard with only a slight adjustment in the corresponding dust control limit.

Bilateral pleural thickening in a relatively asymptomatic patient without evidence of pulmonary disease is frequently a manifestation of asbestos dust exposure, particularly when it is localized or in the form of a noncalcified pleural plaque. Bilateral pleural thickening will be discovered with increasing frequency if specifically searched for on every radiograph. This radiographic finding is suggested as a more realistic indication of asbestos dust exposure, particularly when correlated with a complete occupational history.

Among 25 persons with monosymptomatic exudative pleurisy of unknown etiology there were 11 men who had been exposed to asbestos. Ten of them were investigated during an observation period of 4 to 8 years. The exudate was more or less sanguinolent, had a prolonged course and recurred on the same or opposite side in the majority of cases. PURPOSE: Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive inherited lysosomal storage disease with an incidence of 1:100.000 up to 1:200.000 caused by a gene mutation of a lysosomal transport protein resulting in deposition of cystine in lysosomes in all cells and tissues. In the cornea, crystalline, gold-dust deposition of cystine leads to visual impairment, recurrent erosions, photophobia, epiphora and blepharospasmus. In each year, dust storms triggered by cold air masses passing through northern China and Mongolia enhance the PM10 concentration over Taiwan region during winter and spring. On average, there are four to five dust events and 6.1 dust days in a year in Taiwan. Each event lasts for 1 day or even longer.
