Bacterial community adaptation after brackish and freshwater coalescence.

Microbial community coalescence, the merging of entire microbial communities, is common in estuaries, yet the ecological processes governing community assembly after coalescence remain unclear. To uncover these mechanisms, we conducted controlled microcosm experiments simulating coalescence between freshwater and brackish water bacterial communities across five mixing ratios and incubated them in either freshwater or brackish water. We tracked 40 mixed communities over six passages using Nanopore full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Laboratory incubation reduced diversity and increased taxono

Spatiotemporal Variation in Marine Mammal Antipredator Behaviors Resulting From a Predation Pinch Point.

Predator-prey relationships are fundamental aspects of ecological systems that determine the behavior and distribution of animals across time and space. Variation in predation risk can be used to explore when and why individuals perform antipredator behaviors. In marine environments, it is difficult to observe predation and antipredator behaviors. Fortunately, biologgers have long been used to study the distribution and dive behaviors of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) on their twice-yearly foraging trips. Here, we analyzed the horizontal and vertical movements of 353 adult f

Repeated migration informs amino acid nitrogen isotope incorporation in the African elephant Loxodonta africana.

Accurate interpretation of an organism's isotopic composition relies heavily on the assumption of steady state, which is often violated owing to limited appreciation for isotope incorporation. We present amino acid (AA) nitrogen isotope (δ15N) records from the tail hair of an African elephant (Loxodonta africana) that frequently migrated between the Samburu National Wildlife Reserve and Mount Kenya-these regions have drastically different baseline δ15N values of ~ 10‰. We used this baseline isotopic variation to estimate 15N incorporation for 13 AAs. We observe that incorporation in most AAs i

Elevated CO₂ promotes the translocation and degradation of strobilurin fungicides in cucumber via coupled physiological and metabolic pathways.

Elevated atmospheric CO₂ is a prominent consequence of global climate change, which substantially alters plant physiological processes and further modulates the environmental fate of pesticides in agricultural ecosystems, thereby threatening agricultural product safety and ecological health. Nevertheless, the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying elevated CO₂-regulated uptake, translocation, and metabolism of fungicides in crop plants remain largely unclear. In the present study, cucumber seedlings were selected as the model plant, and integrated physiological detection, subcellu

Dietary Polysaccharides in Skin Health: Structure-Function Relationships and Implications for Nutritional Dermatology.

Skin health depends on the coordinated maintenance of barrier integrity, immune homeostasis, redox balance, microbial ecology, and systemic metabolic status. Among dietary constituents, polysaccharides have attracted increasing attention because they represent a structurally heterogeneous class of complex carbohydrates whose biological behavior is shaped by molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, glycosidic linkage patterns, branching, higher-order conformation, and physicochemical properties. However, many current skin-related studies remain primarily phenomenon-driven, with insufficien

Impact of seasonal changes on the epidemiology of Lassa fever in a state in North Central, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is a recurrent public health threat in Nigeria, particularly in endemic regions such as Kogi State. Its transmission is closely tied to environmental and seasonal dynamics, especially those influencing rodent populations. Understanding these climatic influences is essential for strengthening disease surveillance and implementing timely interventions. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using retrospective epidemiological and climatic data from 2019 to 2024. Confirmed Lassa fever case records and meteorological variables (temperature, rainfall, and

Reframing Mother-Child Closeness and Cooperative Caregiving: A Comparative Study of Two Hunter-Gatherer Populations.

OBJECTIVES: Caregiving during early childhood emerges from a dynamic interplay between maternal and allomaternal contributions. This study aimed to challenge polarized portrayals of hunter-gatherer childcare as either "mother-centered" or "cooperative" and provide empirical evidence for an integrative cross-cultural approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared caregiving structures in two hunter-gatherer populations positioned at contrasting ends of a continuum of child-rearing strategies: the !Xun in southern Africa, portrayed as emphasizing mother-child closeness, and the Baka in central Af

Oocyte developmental stage influences ovary selenium concentrations in fish-implications for ovary selenium monitoring.

Monitoring selenium (Se) concentrations in fish ovaries is an important tool for evaluating the ecological risk posed by Se in aquatic systems. Most guidance recommends sampling fish ovaries as closely as possible to when fish spawn on the premise that Se is mobilized from the liver to the ovary during vitellogenesis, and therefore, sampling ovaries during the early phases of oocyte maturation may underestimate egg Se concentrations at the time of spawning. In this study, we evaluated ovary Se data from two species with synchronous oocyte development (Ptychocheilus oregonensis and Prosopium wi

Mycoplasma bovis Outbreak and Maintenance of Subclinical Infections in An Exposed Cohort of Juvenile American Bison (Bison bison).

The American bison (Bison bison) is an ecologically, economically, and culturally significant species that is exceptionally vulnerable to disease caused by Mycoplasma bovis. In contrast to livestock in which M. bovis is one of many infectious agents comprising the bovine respiratory disease complex, infection in bison is characterized by severe pneumonia and potential for systemic disease in the absence of coinfecting pathogens. In bison, morbidity and mortality are highest in adult cows, whereas calves and yearlings infrequently present with clinical disease. The infection dynamics of M. bovi

Competitive dynamics and balance between Streptococcus mutans and commensal streptococci in oral microecology.

Dental caries, as a biofilm-related disease, is closely linked to dysbiosis in microbial ecology within dental biofilms. Beyond its impact on oral health, bacteria within the oral cavity pose systemic health risks by potentially entering the bloodstream, thereby increasing susceptibility to bacterial endocarditis, among other related diseases. Streptococcus mutans, a principal cariogenic bacterium, possesses virulence factors crucial to the pathogenesis of dental caries. Its ability to adhere to tooth surfaces, produce glucans for biofilm formation, and metabolize sugars into lactic acid contr

Analysis of the zoonotic tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in raw milk and dairy products in mountain pastures of the Lombardy region, Italy.

Over the last few decades, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has become a growing public health problem in Europe. The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a zoonotic virus that affects the central nervous system (CNS). TBEV has been detected in 27 European countries, and the rise in TBE cases is mainly due to environmental and ecological factors, and factors that increase the risk of human exposure to infected ticks. The infection via the alimentary route is the second most common means of TBEV transmission to humans. Raw milk from infected goats, sheep, or cows has been identified as a source

Risk of violence from a current or former partner: Associated factors and classification in a nationwide study in Colombia.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) includes assaults that risk a woman's bodily integrity. Intimate partners commit IPV, people with whom the victim shares (or shared) a close personal or sexual relationship. This phenomenon has a great global and national impact. Thus, it is necessary to establish trends of the risk of physical violence to women by their current or former partner in each department of Colombia and its relationship with sociodemographic and health characteristics. This study uses an ecological approach at the departmental level, with victims of intimate partner violence treated a

Could a rabies incursion spread in the northern Australian dingo population? Development of a spatial stochastic simulation model.

Australia, home to the iconic dingo, is currently free from canine rabies. However northern Australia, including Indigenous communities with large free-roaming domestic dog populations, is at increased risk of rabies incursion from nearby Indonesia. We developed a novel agent-based stochastic spatial rabies spread model to evaluate the potential spread of rabies within the dingo population of the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) region of northern Australia. The model incorporated spatio-temporal features specific to this host-environment system, including landscape heterogeneity, demographic flu

How to reach the poor? Surveillance in low-income countries, lessons from experiences in Cambodia and Madagascar.

Surveillance of animal diseases in developing countries faces many constraints. Innovative tools and methods to enhance surveillance in remote and neglected areas should be defined, assessed and applied in close connection with local farmers, national stakeholders and international agencies. The authors performed a narrative synthesis of their own publications about surveillance in Madagascar and Cambodia. They analysed the data in light of their fieldwork experiences in the two countries' very challenging environments. The burden of animal and zoonotic diseases (e.g. avian influenza, African

[Intestinal dysbiosis and atherogenic dyslipidemia].

Numerous studies in recent years had proved pathogenetic correlation of the intestinal ecological community, not only with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract but also with diseases such as atherosclerosis and hypertension, urolithiasis and pyelonephritis, gallstones and hepatitis. In its role in maintaining homeostasis an intestinal microflora isn't inferior to any other vital organs. All this allowed to distinguish it as an independent body. Recently, as one of the most important factors for the development of dyslipidemia scientists consider breaking the functional state of the liver, as

Evolutionary dynamics of ompA, the gene encoding the Chlamydia trachomatis key antigen.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the trachoma agent and causes most bacterial sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Its major outer membrane protein (MOMP) is a well-known porin and adhesin and is the dominant antigen. So far, investigation of MOMP variability has been focused mainly on molecular epidemiological surveys. In contrast, we aimed to evaluate the impact of the host pressure on this key antigen by analyzing its evolutionary dynamics in 795 isolates from urogenital infections, taking into account the MOMP secondary structure and the sizes/positions of antigenic regions. One-third of the

Development of Trypanosoma everetti in Culicoides biting midges.

Trypanosoma species (Trypanosomatida, Kinetoplastea) are almost exclusively heteroxenous flagellated parasites, which have been extensively studied as the causative agents of severe trypanosomiasis in humans and domestic animals. However, the biology of avian trypanosomes remains insufficiently known, particularly in wildlife, despite information that some species might be pathogenic and affect the fitness of intensively infected individuals. Avian trypanosomes are cosmopolitans. Due to regular bird seasonal migrations, this host-parasite system might provide new insight for better understandi

Barriers to opioid use disorder treatment among people who use drugs in the rural United States: A qualitative, multi-site study.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, 2.8 million people required substance use disorder (SUD) treatment in nonmetropolitan or 'rural' areas in the U.S. Among this population, only 10% received SUD treatment from a specialty facility, and 1 in 500 received medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). We explored the context surrounding barriers to SUD treatment in the rural United States. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews from 2018 to 2019 to assess barriers to SUD treatment among people who use drugs (PWUD) across seven rural U.S. study sites. Using the social-ecological model (SEM), w

Spatiotemporal coordination of virulence, metabolism, and stress responses shapes infection dynamics of Xanthomonas perforans.

Plants host diverse microbial communities across spatially distinct foliar niches. For hemibiotrophic pathogens, the epiphytic leaf surface and the apoplast impose contrasting physiological constraints that shape infection strategies. We investigated how these environments program the transcriptional responses of a tomato pathogen, Xanthomonas perforans (Xp), and how virulence, metabolism, and regulation are coordinated across space and time during disease progression. By selectively enriching and profiling the transcriptome of a pathogen from the leaf surface and apoplast, we uncovered pronou
