Central Neuropathic Pain and Profiles of Quantitative Electroencephalography in Multiple Sclerosis Patients.

Pain has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the neurophysiological mechanisms of central neuropathic pain in a MS course are not known. We hypothesized that changes in power spectral density (PSD) that take place in the electroencephalography (EEG) of MS patients with and without the central neuropathic pain (CNP) would differ. The study aimed to assess the features of quantitative EEG using the PSD indicator along with peak frequencies in the standard frequency bands in MS patients with and without CNP. We have analyzed the quantitat…

Functional organization of the human primary somatosensory cortex: A stereo-electroencephalography study.

OBJECTIVE: The classical homunculus of the human primary somatosensory cortex (S1) established by Penfield has mainly portrayed the functional organization of convexial cortex, namely Brodmann area (BA) 1. However, little is known about the functions in fissural cortex including BA2 and BA3. We aim at drawing a refined and detailed somatosensory homunculus of the entire S1. METHODS: We recruited 20 patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent stereo-electroencephalography for preoperative assessments. Direct electrical stimulation was performed for functional mapping. Montreal Ne…

Clinical aspects, neuroimaging, and electroencephalography of 35 cases of hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia-epilepsy (HHE) syndrome is a rare consequence of febrile seizures during childhood. It is characterized by the presence of prolonged unilateral clonic seizures occurring during febrile illness in a child less than 4years of age. Then, a flaccid unilateral hemiplegia with variable duration occurs. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to describe the clinical, electroencephalogram (EEG), and neuroimaging treatment and outcome of series of cases of HHE syndrome followed for 10years in our clinical neurophysiology department of the specialty hospi

The diagnostic value of power spectra analysis of the sleep electroencephalography in narcoleptic patients.

OBJECTIVE: Manifestations of narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) include disturbed nocturnal sleep - hereunder sleep-wake instability, decreased latency to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and dissociated REM sleep events. In this study, we characterized the electroencephalography (EEG) of various sleep stages in NC versus controls. METHODS: EEG power spectral density (PSD) was computed in 136 NC patients and 510 sex- and age-matched controls. Features reflecting differences in PSD curves were computed. A Lasso-regularized regression model was used to find an optimal feature subset, which was valid…

On the comparison of a novel serious game and electroencephalography biomarkers for early dementia screening.

Patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment are at high risk for developing Alzheimer's disease. Besides episodic memory dysfunction they show deficits in accessing contextual knowledge that further specifies a general spatial navigation task or an executive function (EF) virtual action planning. Virtual reality (VR) environments have already been successfully used in cognitive rehabilitation and show increased potential for use in neuropsychological evaluation allowing for greater ecological validity while being more engaging and user friendly. In our study we employed the in-house platf

Electroencephalography in infants with periventricular leukomalacia: prognostic features at preterm and term age.

Cystic periventricular leukomalacia represents the most severe white-matter lesion in preterm infants and its occurrence accounts for most cases of neurologic impairment in these subjects. Electroencephalographic (EEG) findings and their prognostic value in relation to motor and cognitive outcome were investigated in a group of preterm infants affected by different degrees of cystic periventricular leukomalacia. EEG recordings were carried out in the early postnatal period (first 2 weeks of life) on 24 infants and at term age on 29. In the early postnatal period, background EEG abnormalities (

Spatiospectral dynamics of electroencephalography patterns during propofol-induced alterations of consciousness states.

Altered consciousness induced by anesthetics is characterized by distinct spatial and spectral neural dynamics that are readily apparent in the human electroencephalogram. Despite considerable study, we remain uncertain which brain regions and neural oscillations are involved, as well as how they are impacted when consciousness is disrupted. The experimental data was obtained from the open-access dataset, which contains pre-processed EEG data recorded from 20 healthy participants during propofol sedation. Using unsupervised machine learning methods (i.e., non-negative matrix factorization, NMF
