Consensus for experimental design in electromyography (CEDE) project: Terminology matrix.

Consensus on the definition of common terms in electromyography (EMG) research promotes consistency in the EMG literature and facilitates the integration of research across the field. This paper presents a matrix developed within the Consensus for Experimental Design in Electromyography (CEDE) project, providing definitions for terms used in the EMG literature. The definitions for physiological and technical terms that are common in EMG research are included in two tables, with key information on each definition provided in a comment section. A brief outline of some basic principles for record…

Novel approach for electromyography-controlled prostheses based on facial action.

Individuals with severe tetraplegia frequently require to control their complex assistive devices using body movement with the remaining activity above the neck. Electromyography (EMG) signals from the contractions of facial muscles enable people to produce multiple command signals by conveying information about attempted movements. In this study, a novel EMG-controlled system based on facial actions was developed. The mechanism of different facial actions was processed using an EMG control model. Four asymmetric and symmetry actions were defined to control a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) pros…

Surface respiratory electromyography and dyspnea in acute heart failure patients.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Dyspnea is the most common symptom among hospitalized patients with heart failure (HF) but besides dyspnea questionnaires (which reflect the subjective patient sensation and are not fully validated in HF) there are no measurable physiological variables providing objective assessment of dyspnea in a setting of acute HF patients. Studies performed in respiratory patients suggest that the measurement of electromyographic (EMG) activity of the respiratory muscles with surface electrodes correlates well with dyspnea. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that respiratory m

Prognosis of congenital idiopathic abductor laryngeal paralysis with laryngeal electromyography.

OBJECTIVE: To assess if laryngeal electromyography could provide additional information in the prognosis of congenital bilateral idiopathic abductor vocal cord paralysis (abCBILP). METHODS: We performed a retrospective review over a 23-year period (1995-2018) of all children younger than 13 years old in the Medical University of Innsbruck. RESULTS: We identified five infants with abCBILP. Fiberoptic laryngeal endoscopy revealed bilateral vocal cord immobility in adduction without accompanying laryngeal findings. Tracheostomy rate was 100%. Tracheostomy was performed after minimum 3 weeks of …

Diagnosis, anatomy, and electromyography profiles of 73 nonrecurrent laryngeal nerves.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this work was to compare methods of detecting nonrecurrent laryngeal nerves (NRLNs). METHODS: Specificity and sensitivity were compared in three NRLN detection methods: CT, electromyography (EMG), and A-B point comparison. RESULTS: A total of 73 intraoperative pictures and 36 CT details of NRLNs are presented. Incidence of NRLN was 0.39%. Type I NRLN accounted for 50.7%, type IIA 45.2%, type IIB 4.1%. The NRLN median latency was 2.13 ms vs 3.00 ms median in an RLN control group (P < .001). When the threshold was set to 2.5 ms, EMG latency detection had 96.7% sensit…

Online tremor suppression using electromyography and low-level electrical stimulation.

Tremor is one of the most prevalent movement disorders. There is a large proportion of patients (around 25%) in whom current treatments do not attain a significant tremor reduction. This paper proposes a tremor suppression strategy that detects tremor from the electromyographic signals of the muscles from which tremor originates and counteracts it by delivering electrical stimulation to the antagonist muscles in an out of phase manner. The detection was based on the iterative Hilbert transform and stimulation was delivered above the motor threshold (motor stimulation) and below the motor thres

Pseudomyopathic changes in needle electromyography in lambert-eaton myasthenic syndrome.

Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a rare presynaptic disorder of the neuromuscular junction in association with cancer and subsequently in cases in which no neoplasm has been detected (O'Neill et al., 1988). The diagnosis of LEMS is based on the combination of fluctuating muscle weakness, diminished or absent reflexes, and a more than 60% increment of compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude after brief exercise or 50 Hz stimulation for 1 s in a repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) test (Oh et al., 2005). On the other hand, needle electromyography (EMG) findings related to LEM…

Diagnosis of zygomaticus muscle paralysis using needle electromyography with ultrasonography.

A 22-year-old woman visited our clinic with a history of radiofrequency volumetric reduction for bilateral masseter muscles at a local medical clinic. Six days after the radiofrequency procedure, she noticed a facial asymmetry during smiling. Physical examination revealed immobility of the mouth drawing upward and laterally on the left. Routine nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography (EMG) in facial muscles did not suggest electrodiagnostic abnormalities. We assumed that the cause of facial asymmetry could be due to an injury of zygomaticus muscles, however, since defining the mus…

Anal sphincter electromyography in patients with newly diagnosed idiopathic parkinsonism.

OBJECTIVES: The differential diagnosis of patients with idiopathic parkinsonism is difficult, especially early in the course of the disease. External anal sphincter electromyography (EAS-EMG) has been reported to be of value in the differential diagnosis between Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Patients with MSA are reported to have pathological EAS-EMG and patients with PD are reported to have significantly less pathological EAS-EMG results. Comparisons between patients with parkinsonian disorders have usually been made many years into the disease, and thus it is la…

Comparison of different outlier criteria in quantitative anal sphincter electromyography.

OBJECTIVE: Analysis based on 'outliers' has been demonstrated to be a useful adjunct to mean value analysis in quantitative needle electromyography (EMG). However, the outlier criteria applied have been arbitrarily chosen. The aim of the present study was to determine the most useful outlier criteria in motor unit potential (MUP) analysis. METHODS: The external anal sphincter (EAS) muscles were examined by multi-MUP analysis. From 115 muscles of 64 normative subjects, the 0/100, 5/95, 10/90, 15/85, 20/80, and 25/75 percentile MUP parameter values were grouped individually. From these, the 5/9…

Laryngeal electromyography findings in idiopathic congenital bilateral vocal cord paralysis.

Children with idiopathic congenital bilateral vocal cord paralysis (BVCP) were investigated by electromyography (EMG) of the posterior cricoarytenoid and thyroarytenoid muscles to determine whether laryngeal EMG findings had diagnostic or prognostic significance. Four children between 3 weeks and 33 months of age were studied. Three had abductor paralysis and were tracheostomy-dependent, while the fourth had adductor paralysis requiring a feeding gastrostomy. Two of these patients also had other anomalies. Motor unit potentials showing phasic bursts with respiration were found in all four case…

Dynamic electromyography in active and limited walking below-knee amputees.

Walking electromyography was performed in 12 below-knee amputees, who were amputated for peripheral vascular insufficiency. All were at least 1 year post-surgery and had no problems with the fit of their prostheses. Seven were community walkers and five were limited household ambulators. The quadriceps and hamstring muscles exhibited electrical activity during 60% and 64.7% of the gait cycle, respectively, in the active walkers, compared with 44.6% and 53.8% in the limited walkers. Quadriceps muscle activity was initiated almost 10% earlier in the active walkers, while hamstring muscle initiat…

[Electromyography and electroneurography in peripheral facial nerve paralysis (author's transl)].

The function of the facial nerve can be examined by 4 electrodiagnostic methods. In the nerve excitability test and electroneurography the facial nerve itself is stimulated over the stylomastoid foramen, whereas chronaximetry and electromyography are performed in the muscles. In the majority of patients with Bell's palsy it is possible to make a more or less favourable prognosis by clinical examination alone. As soon as the paralysis is evident only these diagnostic tests give an accurate prediciton. The early realisation of a poor prognosis is surgically important. Chronaximetry and electromy…
