Two cases of lagochilascariasis minor in domestic cats from Costa Rica within a period of two months are recorded for the first time in Central America. Clinical findings included purulent discharge and a tumor in the left ear in one of the cats, whereas the other cat had an ulcerated cervical lesion. Both patients underwent surgical procedures during which nematode worms were collected and analyzed. The collected nematodes were identified using a combination of morphological and molecular assays, which revealed a 99.1% similarity in the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 with L. minor from Mexico.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease affecting mainly various species of livestock and humans. A survey of cystic echinococcosis in cattle was conducted from December 2008 to April 2009 in an endemic area of eastern Turkey. A total of 1758 cattle were examined and hydatid cysts were found in 33.9% of the cattle (595/1758). Most of the cattle (75.8%) had hydatid cysts only in the lungs, 10.9% only in the liver, 12.4% in the both liver and lungs, 0.7% in the spleen and 0.2% in the heart. 220 of these cysts were examined by PCR of 12S rRNA gene and sequencing of mt-CO1 gene. 147 of 22

BACKGROUND: Leigh disease, subacute necrotizing encephalopathy, is a serious mitochondrial disorder of energy-providing metabolism. Clinical presentation usually starts in infancy as a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with retardation and regression of psychomotor development. Using 14C-radiolabeled formate we have found that the rapid form of oxidized cytochrome oxidase can bind up to 1 mol of formate. Treatment of this formate-ligated enzyme with excess cyanide releases 97% of the radiolabel while reduction of formate-labeled enzyme with NADH+ruthenium releases 80-85% of the radioactivity. These data are most simply interpreted by assuming that formate binds to the heme iron of cytochrome a3.
