Oracle Upper Bounds on Clean-EEG Recoverability from Single-Channel Decompositions Under EOG/EMG Contamination.

OBJECTIVE: Single-channel EEG artifact suppression often relies on signal decomposition; however, it is not always clear how much clean EEG is recoverable from a given decomposition when component weighting is ideal. We present an oracle-based benchmark that characterises this best-case recoverability across common 1-D decomposition families under controlled EOG, EMG, and mixed contamination. This work does not propose a new denoising algorithm; rather, it isolates representation capacity from component-selection heuristics by computing an upper bound on reconstruction quality. APPROACH: Usin

A novel method for the detection of VEP signals from frontal region.

PURPOSE: This paper studies the feasibility of frontal positioning of electrode to detect electroencephalographic signals. METHODS: The experiments were conducted using a board with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) designed to stimulate SSVEP and FVEP. The flashing frequencies were conducted at 15, 23, and 31 Hz. We used the Quick Amp brain wave amplifier to collect brain wave signals at a sampling rate of 1 kHz using a frequency filter band of 10-100 Hz. RESULTS: We found that the energy power of VEP will gradually increase from Oz position to Fp2 position. We analyze the data, proving that the

The mental lexicon is fully specified: evidence from eye-tracking.

Four visual-world experiments, in which listeners heard spoken words and saw printed words, compared an optimal-perception account with the theory of phonological underspecification. This theory argues that default phonological features are not specified in the mental lexicon, leading to asymmetric lexical matching: Mismatching input (pin) activates lexical entries with underspecified coronal stops (tin), but lexical entries with specified labial stops (pin) are not activated by mismatching input (tin). The eye-tracking data failed to show such a pattern. Although words that were phonologicall

Visually induced motion sickness with radial displays: effects of gaze angle and fixation.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to moving visual scenes can induce illusory feelings of self-motion (vection) and visually induced motion sickness in stationary observers. We have investigated the effect of viewing conditions on motion sickness in a radial optic flow environment, simulating the situation in which an observer shifts gaze in order to sample from the environment. In view of the spatiotemporal structure of radial flow patterns, vection magnitude and motion sickness were expected to increase when gaze position was directed away from the focus of expansion. METHODS: There were 12 participants

Electrocochleography in patients with Meniere's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of electrocochleography (ECoG) in the diagnosis of Meniere's disease. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a retrospective case review. METHODS: Patients undergoing ECoG for Meniere's disease between 1995 and 2003 were identified and segregated as having definite , probable , or possible Meniere's disease according to the 1995 American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery guidelines for Meniere's disease classification. Those determined to have probable and possible Meniere's disease were then combined to form a less-than-defi

Smooth pursuit eye movements in patients with ocular motor nerve palsies: a preliminary report.

The trajectories, velocity, and co-ordination of smooth pursuit eye movements were investigated in 30 patients with ocular motor nerve palsies (including palsies of cranial nerves III, IV and VI). The recordings of horizontal and vertical eye movements were obtained by video-oculography under monocular viewing conditions. During the recordings, horizontal, vertical, and oblique target movements of 10 degrees /s constant velocity were presented to the subjects in succession. In contrast to normal subjects, smooth pursuit eye movements in patients with ocular nerve palsies showed considerable di

Diurnal variations in the waking EEG: comparisons with sleep latencies and subjective alertness.

Daytime measures of sleep latency and subjective alertness do not correlate with one another, suggesting that they assess different aspects of alertness. In addition, their typical diurnal variations show very different time courses. Quantitative analysis of the waking electroencephalogram (EEG) has been proposed as an objective measure of alertness, but it is not clear how it compares with other measures. In this study, the waking EEG was measured in the daytime to determine the presence of diurnal variations in the activity of standard frequency bands and to compare these variations with the

Saccadic eye movements in essential blepharospasm.

To provide evidence of an organic pathology for essential (idiopathic) blepharospasm, reflex saccadic eye movements in response to randomly stepped visual targets were assessed in seven affected patients and seven age-matched controls using the magnetic scleral search coil technique. The results indicate a significant prolongation in latency and a reduction in gain of horizontal saccades, and an increase in latency and reduction of peak velocity of large downward saccades. These findings suggest an organic component to the aetiology of blepharospasm, the pathology of which also appears to invo

[Electro-ophthalmological analysis of Behçet's disease].

Six patients with complete type Behçet's disease were studied electro-retinographically and electro-oculographically. The electrical responses tested include the hyperosmolarity response in the EOG, the oscillatory potentials and the rapid off-response in the ERG. The oscillatory potentials diminished in five eyes of four cases. In all except one of these eyes the rapid off-response and the hyperosmolarity response were within normal ranges. The hyperosmolarity response was suppressed in one eye which suffered from severe diffuse uveitis and iridocyclitis accompanied with hypopyon. The a-wave,

[Diagnostic aspects of myasthenia gravis].

Myasthenia gravis is described on the basis of both the physiological mechanisms of neuromuscular transmission and the current knowledge of the pathogenesis of the disease. The different laboratory tests in use are considered with regard to their diagnostic significance, in addition to the clinical features of the disease. Differential diagnosis has to include myasthenic syndromes of different origin, periodic paralysis, diseases of the peripheral motor neuron as well as certain myopathies.

Clinical characterization and etiology of space motion sickness.

An inflight, clinically-oriented investigation of SMS was begun on STS-4 and revealed the following: compared to motion sickness on Earth, autonomic signs are significantly different in space motion sickness (SMS) vs. motion sickness (MS) in that sweating is not present, pallor or flushing may be present, and vomiting is episodic, sudden, and brief. Nausea may be present but is more often absent. Onset ranges from minutes to hours, plateaus, and rapidly resolves in 8-72 h with 36 h as average. Postflight reactions have been mild unless deliberately provoked in the early period of re-exposure t

Transdermally administered scopolamine vs. dimenhydrinate. II. Effect on different types of nystagmus.

The effects of transdermally administered scopolamine (TTS-scopolamine) (release rate 5 micrograms/h, one and two patches) and dimenhydrinate (100 mg) on caloric, angular acceleration induced and optokinetic nystagmus were examined in 16 volunteers in a randomized double-blind study. All drugs induced a statistically significant decrease in maximum velocity of caloric nystagmus, as compared with placebo. In the rotatory test, two TTS-scopolamine and dimenhydrinate reduced the vestibular gain significantly. No changes were observed in time constant. In the optokinetic test, all drugs tended to

[Diagnosis and treatment of Stilling-Türk-Duane syndrome (clinical electromyographic and electrooculographic studies)].

The results of clinical, EMG and EOG examinations in 42 patients with Duane's syndrome are analyzed and some characteristic clinical examples are presented. The clinical analysis of motoric and sensoric disturbances in Duane's syndrome reveals elements of concomitant squint in ocular statics. Dynamically, there are marked differences with regard to concomitant and paralytic squint. A number of interesting observations are reported relating to the permanent tonic innervation of the lateral rectus muscle, polymorphic EOG dyssynergia in saccadic and smooth pursuit movements and the progression of

[Electro-ophthalmological responses in inflammations of various sections of the orbital visual pathways (author's transl)].

In a study of electro-ophthalmological responses of the EOG, the photopic and scotopic ERG, the OP and the VECP, in combination with fluorescein angiography and computerized perimetry, in 34 patients suffering from uveitis, chorioretinitis (lesions near the macula and at the periphery), papillitis or retrobulbar neuritis, the following results were obtained: Uveitis and chorioretinitis with lesions either near the macula or at the retinal periphery produce different responses; generally, pathologic responses of the EOG and ERG and normal VECP are obtained in cases of uveitis. Peripheral chorio

[Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia with atypical retinal pigment dystrophy (author's transl)].

A brief review of the literature on chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia is followed by a description of two unusual cases. The first, Kearns-Shy syndrome, was a pronounced case of "ophthalmoplegia-plus syndrome", though with normal retinal function. The second patient had retinal pigment dystrophy with severe disturbance of retinal function, as well as a complete lack of ocular motility.

Effects of two adrenergic beta-receptor blockers on the sleep cycle of the cat.

Sixteen hour polygraphic recordings (EEG, EOG and EMG) were obtained from 14 adult cats after intraperitoneal injections of propranolol (5 mg/kg) or pindolol (0.1 or 0.5 mg/kg). All injections moderately increased waking, which consisted mainly of a sedated drowsy stage. Both drugs also decreased deep slow wave sleep, while light slow wave sleep remained at control levels. The changes were more marked after propranolol, which also significantly reduced paradoxical sleep (PS). The decrease in the deeper stages of sleep and PS is suggested as being due to blockade of the central adrenergic beta-

Round window ultrasonic irradiation for Meniere's disease with ENG monitoring.

Utrasonic irradiation of the labyrinth via the round window is effective in controlling otological vertigo. This method of surgical management for incapacitating vertigo is presented with demonstrative intraoperative electronystagmograms and irradiated cat neuro-epithelium. Such data suggest that more intense irradiation doses than previously reported should be applied to effectively destroy the diseased labyrinthine end organs. Precise end points of destructive irradiation are defined by characteristic intraoperative electronystagmograms. The authors suggest this is an ideal procedure when th
