Nursing students' work readiness and its influencing factors before participating in a nurse residency program: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that work readiness is closely related to nurses' role adaptation, career development, and patient safety. However, we know little about the nursing students' work readiness and its influencing factors before participating in a nurse residency program, and whether factors have changed from before. AIM: (1) To investigate the work readiness of nursing students ready to engage in a nurse residency program; (2) to identify the factors affecting the nursing students' work readiness and the associations between emotional intelligence and work readiness; and (3) to di…

Synthetic love in the digital age: AI-mediated emotional investment and gendered romantic dependence.

Digital technology has transformed romantic relationships, influencing men's and women's emotional investment differently. Drawing on "Romantic Relationships Matter More to Men than to Women," this commentary examines how artificial intelligence (AI)-driven dating, social and virtual platforms reshape partner search and mourning. It analyses synthetic love-from digital mediation to AI companions-arguing that these technologies may reinforce male emotional dependency and heighten post-breakup vulnerability.

Emotional vernacular boundaries: participation in school culture boosts the emotional logic of rural teachers' rootedness in the countryside-a qualitative study from China.

Paying attention to the emotional labor of rural teachers is a necessary step to enhance their professional happiness and promote the development of high-quality rural education. Based on the theory of emotional intelligence (EI), this study conducted a qualitative research on 13 frontline rural teachers. From the three dimensions of emotional mapping, emotional investment, and emotional resonance, it explored the emotional cornerstone, emotional motivation, and emotional destination of rural teachers in participating in school cultural construction. The study also attempted to explore how to …

Can Mandarin-speaking prelingual deaf adults benefit from cochlear implant?

BACKGROUND: With advances in cochlear implant (CI) technology, prelingual deaf adults may experience improved speech perception and quality of life (QoL). It is still a challenge for Mandarin-speaking CI user with tone recognition due to CI technology focused on intonation language. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the long-term post-CI auditory performance and social-emotional benefits in prelingual deaf Mandarin-speaking adults and the difference between them and post-lingual deaf adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-five adult implanted ears were included (forty-six postlingual deaf group; nine pre

Emotional role-taking abilities of children with a pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.

Seven to 12-year-old children with a Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS) were compared with normal, healthy children of the same age and sex on three different emotional role-taking tasks. In these tasks, children had to use person-specific information to make an inference about another child's emotional reaction and behaviour, Significant differences were found between the PDDNOS group and control group: PDDNOS children performed worse on all three role-taking tasks. However, the differences on one of these tasks could be completely explained by intelligence diff

Exploring the impact of adolescent cognitive inflexibility on emotional and behavioural problems experienced by autistic adults.

Autistic people experience high levels of co-occurring mental health difficulties. To develop more effective treatments, a greater understanding of the thinking processes that may lead to these difficulties is needed. Cognitive inflexibility, defined as a rigid pattern of thoughts and subsequently behaviours, is one possible thinking trait which has previously been associated with both co-occurring mental health difficulties but also other features of autism such as restricted and repetitive behaviours. Restricted and repetitive behaviours include repetitive movements, ritualistic behaviours,

Social intelligence and the biology of leadership.

UNLABELLED: A decade ago in these pages, Goleman published his highly influential article on emotional intelligence and leadership. Now he, a cochair of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations, and Boyatzis, a professor at Case Western, extend Goleman's original concept using emerging research about what happens in the brain when people interact. Social intelligence, they say, is a set of interpersonal competencies, built on specific neural circuits, that inspire people to be effective. The authors describe how the brain's mirror neurons enable a person to reprod…

Intellectual performance correlates of trauma exposure in adolescent psychiatric inpatients.

Half of individuals have experienced a trauma adequate to meet criteria for PTSD. Intelligence may correlate with trauma, with the causal direction unclear. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was administered to 733 child and adolescent inpatients. Intelligence and academic achievement was assessed using the Wechsler Scales. Clinician diagnoses came from the electronic medical record, as did data on exposure to substance abuse and other stressors. Multivariate analyses assessed associations between intelligence, diagnoses, experiences, and CTQ. Cases who met criteria for physical and sex

AI-based emotion recognition in dementia through facial expression: A scoping review.

Emotion assessment in dementia care is vital for patient well-being and effective care planning. Traditional methods are often subjective and time-consuming. This study examines the use of AI-based facial expression analysis for emotion recognition in dementia patients. A scoping review was conducted using the SPIDER strategy. Five databases-PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, ProQuest, and IEEE Xplore -were consulted, with additional records identified through snowballing. Data on participant characteristics, intervention details, non-AI comparisons, and clinical outcomes were categorized. Two authors

Emerging trends and clinical challenges in AI-enhanced emotion diagnosis using physiological data.

This review explores the relationships between physiological parameters and emotions, as well as the potential value and applications of the use of machine learning to facilitate emotion recognition. First, the relationships between physiological parameters (such as heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, galvanic skin response, electroencephalography, and heart rate variability [HRV]) and emotions are discussed. The impacts of emotional states on these physiological parameters represent a crucial aspect of emotion research. For example, the increased heart rates and faster breathing resultin

Effects of neuromuscular versus plyometric training on physical fitness and mental well-being in male pubertal soccer players.

Neuromuscular training (NMT) and plyometric training (PT) are commonly used during long-term athlete development, yet their relative effects on physical fitness and mental well-being are not fully understood. This study compared 8 weeks of NMT versus PT on physical fitness, mental well-being, emotional intelligence, and attention in pubertal male soccer players and explored associations between training-induced changes in these domains. Twenty-four male soccer players (12.3-12.5 years, circa-peak height velocity: - 0.7 to - 0.8) were randomly assigned to NMT or PT. Both groups trained twice we…

Physiological and psychological responses to five-day fasting.

The objective of this study was to examine the variations in adipokines, myokines, inflammation indicators, glucose, insulin, and ketones in the body over a 5-day fasting period. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate the underlying factors contributing to changes in body mass index (BMI) and fat mass. These factors included blood markers, participants' healthy lifestyle habits, emotional intelligence, personality traits, impulsivity, overall well-being, and subjective happiness. The study involved 42 women with an average age of 49.8 years (± 9.3 years). The following indicators were me…

Does Emotional State Improve Following Temporomandibular Joint Total Joint Replacement?

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint total joint replacement (TMJTJR) offers patients the opportunity for improved function and reduced pain. TMJTJR also has the potential to affect a patient's emotions in a positive or negative manner. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in emotional state for subjects undergoing TMJTJR. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: The authors implemented a retrospective cohort study.
