The objective of this review is to summarize the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for perturbations of endocrine function and development of structural lesions that result in important diseases in domestic and laboratory animals. For each major category, several specific disease problems have been selected to illustrate the functional and morphologic lesions that are characteristic for either a naturally occurring endocrinopathy or endocrine disturbances induced by the administration of large doses of xenobiotic chemicals. The major pathogenic mechanisms responsible for disruption of endocrin

In tumours of the endocrine system there are very few real "tumour markers" (e.g. CEA); all other relevant tests measure by radioassay several endocrine materials which are produced in similar ways by tumours and normal glands. Therefore, tumour marker assays in endocrinology are usually performed in follow-up studies after more or less radical therapy of tumours of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, endocrine pancreas and the adrenal glands. On the basis of approximately 3000 assays of HGH, prolactin, thyroglobulin, calcitonin, CEA, insulin, gastrin, cortisol and aldoster

Endocrine cells in the intrahepatic biliary tree were examined histochemically and immunohistochemically in human infants and adults, as well as in patients with hepatolithiasis. Endocrine cells were sparse but found rather constantly in normal infant livers as well as in adult livers. Almost all endocrine cells were of argyrophil cells or somatostatin-containing cells, and they were usually found in the extramural peribiliary glands in normal livers. On the other hand, in hepatolithiasis in which there were marked proliferation of the peribiliary glands and hyperplasia of surface-lining epith

Multiple endocrine syndromes are unusual familial disorders affecting multiple endocrine glands; they result from an autoimmune process, causing progressive inflammatory destruction of glandular tissue, leading to hormonal insufficiency. Neurologic manifestations result from endocrine failure and/or independent autoimmune neurologic disorders. Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) results from oncogene mutations in cells derived from the neural crest with proliferation of neuroectodermal cells within endocrine glands and skin. Although most MEN-associated tumors are histologically benign, medulla…

Intestinal metaplasia (IM) in the human stomach has previously been classified into a gastric and intestinal mixed (GI-IM) and a solely intestinal phenotype (I-IM). The phenotypes of mucous and endocrine cells were evaluated in 3034 glandular ducts associated with chronic gastritis. In the pyloric region, the relative expression of gastric endocrine cell markers, such as gastrin and somatostatin, decreased gradually from glandular ducts with only gastric mucous cell phenotype (G type) to GI-IM toward I-IM, while that of the intestinal endocrine cell markers, glicentin, gastric inhibitory polyp

The parathyroid and thymus glands are key components of the endocrine and immune systems, respectively, with intriguing developmental, anato … and parathyroid activity. Understanding the functional and etiopathogenical relations between these endocrine glands offers new insights into endocrine-immunological crosstalk, and therapeutic approaches targeting disorders such as hypoparathyroidism, thymomas, myasthenia gravis and thymic hypoplasia. Perspectives and conclusion: Future research is essential to di …

Immunoreactivity to VIP by endocrine-like cells in the feline pyloric mucosa was examined by using three kinds of region-specific anti-porcine VIP sera. VIP-immunoreactive endocrine-like cells were detected clearly with all of the VIP antisera used. They were located mainly around the neck of the pyloric glands. Some of these endocrine-like cells showed dilution-dependent immunoreactivity against VIP antisera. The immunostaining intensity of VIP-immunoreactive endocrine-like cells showing dilution-independence could not be distinguished from those of nerve elements. The present results suggest

The endocrine system coordinates and integrates cellular activity throughout the body by regulating cellular and organ function and maintain … growth, metabolism, reproduction, stress adaptation, and circadian rhythms throughout the lifespan. Endocrine glands-such as the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid glands, pancreas, adrenal glands, and gonads-secrete hormones that act via autocrine, paracrine, or endocrine mechanisms to influence target tissues. Hormonal actions are mediated by either c …

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare disease, defined as a tumor developing in at least two endocrine glands including the anterior pituitary gland, the parathyroid glands and the duodenopancreatic endocrine tissue. This disorder, inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, is caused by mutations in the MEN1 gene encoding the tumor suppressor menin and located on chromosome 11q13. However, sporadic cases account for 8-14%. The first endocrine lesion may be solitary in approximately 75% of cases. However, all major alterations can be inaugural. We here report a case of multiple …

Twenty-two buffalo bulls suffering from three different types of infertility were slaughtered and used for this study. Except for the reproductive system, no signs of localised or generalised disease were observed. Microbiological investigations were negative for brucellosis, vibriosis, mycoplasma and other non-specific microorganisms. Nine bulls with type 1 infertility had low bodyweights and underdevelopment of testes, accessory sex glands and endocrine glands. This picture suggests a total dysfunction of the pituitary-growth-gonadal axis. One bull of this type also showed bilateral epididym…

We report a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma(NHL) with simultaneous involvement of both thyroid and bilateral adrenal glands. Literature review on a computerized search showed that this is an extremely rare condition. The final diagnosis of diffuse large B cell lymphoma was confirmed by biopsies of thyroid gland, enlarged cervical lymph node, and adrenal gland. The significant endocrine dysfunction of the thyroid, adrenal or other endocrine glands was absent in our case. The patient responded dramatically to three cycles of chemotherapy with no complication or endocrine dysfunction and continues…

BACKGROUND: Finding and preserving normal parathyroid glands or localizing and removing diseased parathyroid glands are crucial steps to successful thyroid and parathyroid operations. Using near-infrared fluorescence detection to identify parathyroid glands during thyroid and parathyroid operations has lately gained widespread recognition, with 2 Food and Drug Administration-cleared devices currently in the market. We aim to update the endocrine surgery community on how near-infrared fluorescence detection can be most optimally used for rapid intraoperative parathyroid gland identification or

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) Type I syndrome is a rare tumor of unknown etiology with a prevalence of 0.02 to 0.2 per 1000. Some of the tumors associated with MEN I include pituitary adenomas, parathyroid adenomas, hyperplastic tissue, and pancreatic B and non-B islet cell tumors. The clinical presentation is usually secondary to the specific hyperfunction characteristic of the different endocrine glands. Hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia precede all other manifestations in the majority of cases. Surgery plays a major role in management, and the condition should be considered when a …

Insect salivary glands have been previously shown to function in pupal attachment and food lubrication by secreting factors into the lumen via an exocrine way. Here, we find in Drosophila that a salivary gland-derived secreted factor (Sgsf) peptide regulates systemic growth via an endocrine way. Sgsf is specifically expressed in salivary glands and secreted into the hemolymph. Sgsf knockout or salivary gland-specific Sgsf knockdown decrease the size of both the body and organs, phenocopying the effects of genetic ablation of salivary glands, while salivary gland-specific Sgsf overexpression in

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have brought a major breakthrough in the treatment of malignant tumors. However, the use of ICIs has led to the emergence of new, previously unknown side effects in oncology. These agents disrupt immunological homeostasis and reduce T-cell tolerance, which can lead to the activation of autoreactive T-cells, causing various immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Side effects affecting endocrine organs develop relatively frequently with immunotherapy, affecting approximately 10% of patients. Any endocrine organ, or even several at the same time, can be damaged

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) is a well-known syndrome in human medicine, whereas only a few cases of concurrent endocrine neoplasias have been reported in dogs and cats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of concurrent endocrine neoplasias in dogs and cats at our clinic, identify possible breed and sex predispositions and investigate similarities with MEN syndromes in humans. Postmortem reports of 951 dogs and 1155 cats that died or were euthanased at the Clinic for Small Animal Internal Medicine, University of Zurich, between 2004 and 2014 were reviewed, and animals wi

The presence of two peptides that belong to the somatostatin family has been investigated in the calf gut. Somatostatin-14-like and Somatostatin-28-like peptides have been localized by a light microscopic immunohistochemical method. The method employed antibodies linked to colloidal gold particles that were revealed by a silver-enhancement step. Somatostatin-14-like peptide was only present in mucosal endocrine cells, which were detectable along the entire gut with the exceptions of the abomasal gastric proper glands and caecum. The cells were most abundant in cardiac and pyloric glands. Lange

Car- diovascular abnormalities associated with endocrine diseases are often frequent and due to complex relationships between endocrine glands (with internal secretion) and cardiovascular system (heart and vessels). Certain hormones secreted by the endocrine glands (particularly the thyroid and pituitary gland) excesses or deficiencies, are involved in morphogenesis, growth processes and activity regulation of cardiovascular system, most often in connection with the autonomic nervous system. There are also a lot of electrocardiographic changes caused by hormonal disorders that requires differe…
