Aim The aim of the study was to review the implementation of hygiene guidelines for the reprocessing of endodontic files in a representative survey and to determine the time needed for the procedure. Methods A questionnaire with nine items was sent to 4,000 German dentists. In addition to obtaining personal information, it asked for the total time required for the reprocessing of instruments and contained specific questions about the cleaning procedure in order to assess whether the requirements of the German Federal Ministry of Health, as defined by the Robert Koch Institute, were complied wit

Paresthesia is a neurosensitivity disorder caused by injury to the neural tissue. It is characterized by a burning or twinging sensation or by partial loss of local sensitivity. Paresthesia related to endodontic treatment can occur because of extravasation of filling material or the intracanal dressing, as a consequence of periapical surgery or because of periapical infection. A literature review of paresthesia in endodontics was undertaken, with a view to identifying and discussing the most commonly affected nerves, the diagnostic process and the treatment options. Among reported cases, the m

Haemophilia and other bleeding disorders remain an enigma to the dentists world over. They not only challenge the skills of dental specialists but also raise the question of how these individuals should be managed emotionally as well as psychologically. The high incidence of dental problems in haemophiliacs is most likely caused by the fear and apprehension not only on the part of the patients but also dentists of inducing bleeding during treatment which can even be life threatening in certain cases. With proper care, diligence and meticulous treatment planning, there is no dental treatment th

Foreign bodies found in the maxillary sinus include tooth roots, burs, dental impression material, root-filling materials, dental implants, and needles. The purpose of this paper was to present an unusual case of a large foreign body of endodontic origin (root-filling material) removed from the maxillary sinus. A 45-year-old generally healthy male patient reported to the Department of Conservative Dentistry with Endodontics of the Medical University of Silesia, because of orbital and buccal pain on the right side of his face and headaches in the preceding 6 months. Those symptoms were associat

AIM: To evaluate antibiofilm activity against Enterococcus faecalis, pH and solubility of AH Plus, Sealer 26, Epiphany SE, Sealapex, Activ GP, MTA Fillapex (MTA-F) and an experimental MTA-based Sealer (MTA-S).
METHODOLOGY: Sealer samples were manipulated and stored for 2 or 7 days. Prepared sealers were evaluated by a modified direct contact test (DCT) for 5 h, 10 h or 15 h with biofilm previously induced on bovine dentine for 14 days. In the control group, the biofilm was not exposed to the sealers. The number of colony-forming units (CFU mL(-1) ) in the remaining biofilm was determined. Sea

Alveolar ridge resorption has long been considered an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction. While the extent and pattern of resorption is variable among individuals, there is a progressive loss of ridge contour as a result of physiologic bone remodeling. Even today, with best modalities of tooth preservation, there is a group of elderly individuals who do not benefit from modern preventive practices and who now present a dilemma in terms of maintaining the masticatory apparatus necessary for nutrition. Even with excellent dental care, such patients experience abrasion of the natural toot

AIM: Emergency pulpectomy is frequently performed to relieve pain experienced by patients following acute episodes of endodontic pain, or to limit the risks of infection or possible root resorption following traumatic pulpal exposures. The aim of this study was to examine subsequent patient attendance for completion of root canal treatment following pulpectomy procedures in a dental emergency unit.
METHODS: The treatment records of 574 patients who had each received an emergency pulpectomy at the Casualty Clinic of the University Dental School and Hospital, Cork, Ireland were reviewed. The in

Successful treatment of apical periodontitis is dependent on the elimination of the infective microflora from the necrotic root canal system. Antimicrobial irrigating solutions and other locally used disinfecting agents and medicaments have a key role in the eradication of the microbes. While most if not all presently used disinfecting agents rapidly kill even the resistant microbes when tested in vitro in a test tube, the effectiveness of the same agents is clearly weaker in the in vivo conditions. Recent studies have given valuable information about the interaction of endodontic disinfecting

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, radiographically, whether there is similarity in the apical root resorption found in endodontically treated teeth and untreated teeth when they are submitted to orthodontic treatment. From 2,500 treatment records examined, 16 patients were selected who had a maxillary central incisor treated endodontically before initiation of the orthodontic movement, and a vital homologous tooth (for control). Measurements were made by comparing the periapical radiographs taken before and after the orthodontic treatment. There was no statistically significant differ

Taurodontism is a rare dental anomaly in which the involved tooth has an enlarged and elongated body and pulp chamber with apical displacement of the pulpal floor. Endodontic treatment of these teeth is challenging, because it is hard to identify the number of root canals. In this article a case of bilateral involvement of maxillary first molars is presented. Endodontic treatment of right maxillary first molar with taurodontism was indicated due to irreversible pulpitis. This article describes the procedures of root canal therapy.

The paresthesias of the inferior dental nerve consists of a complication that can occur after performing various dental procedures such as cystectomies, extraction of impacted teeth, apicoectomies, endodontic treatments, local anesthetic deposition, preprosthetic or implantologic surgery. The possible mechanisms of nervous lesions are mechanical, chemical and thermal. Mechanical injury includes compression, stretching, partial or total resection and laceration. The lesion can cause a discontinuity to the nerve with Wallerian degeneration of the distal and integrated fibers of the covering (axo

Enterococcus faecalis has been shown to be highly resistant once established in the root canal system and may play an important role in endodontic failures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of four root canal sealers on E. faecalis. Seventeen blood-agar plates were inoculated with E. faecalis using the Lawn technique. Five discs were placed on each plate, four with sealers--Sealapex, Roth 811, Kerr EWT, and AH-Plus--and an ampicillin disc as the control. The plates were incubated at 37 degrees C. The zones of inhibition were measured at 24 and 48 h. Analysis

The purpose of this study was to compare ISO standards versus a new technique for in vitro evaluation of cytotoxicity of root canal sealers. The cytotoxicity of AH Plus, Cortisomol, and Sealapex was first recorded according to ISO standards on L 929 fibroblasts by the MTT assay. In parallel, 30 single-rooted teeth were cut at the cementum enamel junction (CEJ), and the roots were prepared and sterilized before filling with the lateral condensation using one of three sealers (n = 10). The apexes of the roots were dipped into 1 ml of minimum essential medium for 1, 2, and 30 days renewing the me

The presence of connections between periodontium and endodontium can lead to the diffusion of an infection from one apparatus to another. The involvement of both periodontium and endodontium is defined as Combined Periodontic-Endodontic lesions. This definition is not based on the initial etiology of the lesion and either the endodontic or periodontal lesion may be the cause or the result of the other or both may develop independently. The lesions must be correctly diagnosed for the best therapeutic approach. The diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and radiographic analysis; clinical signs

Calcific metamorphosis (CM) is seen commonly in the dental pulp after traumatic tooth injuries and is recognized clinically as early as 3 months after injury. Calcific metamorphosis is characterized by deposition of hard tissue within the root canal space and yellow discoloration of the clinical crown. Opinion differs among practitioners as to whether to treat these cases upon early detection of CM or to observe them until symptoms or radiographic signs of pulpal necrosis are detected. In this review, the clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic appearance of CM is described; a review of th

AIM: The apical sealing ability of three different endodontic sealers was evaluated in extracted teeth using dye penetration.
METHODOLOGY: The root canals of 99 extracted human maxillary central incisors were prepared sequentially 2 mm beyond the apical foramen with a size 55 Nitiflex file. The teeth were divided into three experimental groups and obturated by lateral condensation of cold gutta-percha and one of the following sealers: group 1, zinc oxide and eugenol sealer (Fill Canal); group 2, glass ionomer sealer (Ketac-Endo) and group 3, epoxy resin sealer (AH Plus). The teeth were covere

Presence of cholesterol clefts in apical periodontitis lesions is a common histopathological observation. However, a potential aetiological association of cholesterol crystals to non-resolving apical periodontitis lesions after endodontic treatment has been suggested only recently. This article is an attempt to explain the biological basis for the inability of body cells to eliminate the local accumulation of cholesterol crystals, and to consolidate available clinical and experimental data in support of the view that massive accumulation of cholesterol crystals in inflamed periapical tissues c

The purpose of this paper was to examine the varied impact of the pathological spread of dental sepsis into the adjacent maxillary sinus. This complex of tissue destruction is called Endo-Antral Syndrome; the usual radiographic diagnostic features are identified in the paper. The four different cases presented serve to illuminate a few of the many diagnostic and treatment challenges involved. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of a keen sense of wariness when endodontically treating maxillary posterior teeth whose apexes are close to the sinus. Dental examination should include an appraisal
