Electron dense granules (EDGs) were identified by transmission electron microscopy in Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites recovered from hamster liver lesions. Abundant granules were present in trophozoites recovered after 15 min of liver inoculation. Variation in the size and morphology of these EDGs was also observed. A female boa (Boa constrictor) from a zoological collection was submitted for necropsy after sudden death. The prevalence of antibodies against Entamoeba histolytica was studied in the Mexican population using an immunoenzyme assay in solid phase (ELISA) and semiautomatic equipment. The antigen was a mixture of membrane proteins obtained by Triton X-100 extraction from an axenic culture of Entamoeba histolytica HM1-IMSS. Groups of athymic rnu rats were found to be susceptible to SAW 408 Entamoeba histolytica introduced intra-intestinally. The same strain of rat could be infected orally with cultured trophozoites using a gastric secretion inhibitor, cimetidine, as a pretreatment. Groups of Lac:P and Wistar rats similarly treated were also found to be susceptible although the parasite population growth was slow. A similar regimen attempted on susceptible mice was unsuccessful.

The authors have studied the effects of PGE1 on rats (Wistar strain) infected with Entamoeba histolytica, and inoculated with PGE1 either in massive dosage and killed after 3-5 and 7 days, or with daily minimum quantity of PGE1 and killed on days 7 and 15 after inoculation. The results show an inhibition effect of PGE1 on development and survival of amoebae in the coecum of rats inoculated with the two modalities described above. The fractionated dosage gives better results and less side effects.

Mice naturally infected with Syphacia obvelata were challenged intracaecally with Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites. They showed a higher level of amoebic infection than mice without worms. Mice with the heaviest Syphacia infection were the most susceptible to amoebic infection. It appears that a concomitant infection with helminthic parasites residing in the caecum alters the outcome of an amoebic infection.
