This study evaluated the necessity of examining the upper airway in children with nocturnal enuresis. 225 children (aged 5-16 years), who were referred from the urology outpatient clinic between May 2015 and May 2016 and who had completed toilet training, were included in this study. Participants were separated into monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) (group 1) and without MNE (group 2) groups. Tonsil hypertrophy, adenoid vegetation, septal deviation, turbinate hypertrophy, allergic rhinitis, upper airway obstruction, and snoring etiology were assessed. In total, 112 children with MNE (gr…

UNLABELLED: Nocturnal polyuria in monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) has so far mainly been attributed to a disturbed circadian rhythm of renal water handling. Low vasopressin levels overnight correlate with absent maximal concentrating activity, resulting in an increased nocturnal diuresis with low urinary osmolality. Therefore, treatment with desmopressin is a rational choice. Unfortunately, 20 to 60 % of children with monosymptomatic enuresis are desmopressin-resistant. There is increasing evidence that other disturbed circadian rhythms might play a role in nocturnal polyuria. This re…

AIM: We present our experience in the treatment of enuresis at the Pediatric Urology Outpatient Office over a period of four years. We report pertinent epidemiological data, diagnostic workup, as well as routine treatment protocol.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between April 1998 and May 2002, 142 healthy children, aged between 6.5 and 18 years (mean: 9 +/- 0.5 years), were referred to us for bedwetting. Ninety three of them were boys and 49--girls. Eight of them had also concurrent daytime enuresis. According to our protocol, the type of enuresis was identified (primary or secondary) and then we adm…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate children with refractory monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis to determine whether detrusor overactivity (DOA) plays a role in 4 weeks of unsuccessful treatment with retention control training (RCT); whether an increase in bladder capacity can eventually be obtained by RCT plus oxybutynin; and whether the increase in capacity is the primary key to success.
METHODS: Sixty-eight children with refractory monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis were included. They all had a maximal cystometric capacity less than the age-expected value. RCT was done by water loading and retention …

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors associated with childhood enuresis.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 146 children aged 6 to 13 years diagnosed with enuresis at Anhui Province Children's Hospital between June 2020 and June 2023. Children were categorized based on bedwetting frequency: those with less frequent episodes (once a week to twice a month) were placed in the mild group (60 cases), and those with frequent episodes (two or more times per week) were placed in the severe group (86 cases). We compared demographic data, family histories, and personal characteristics bet…

BACKGROUND/AIM: Nocturnal enuresis can be frustrating for children and their families as the child ages. Our aim is to evaluate urine aquaporin 2 (AQP-2) as a noninvasive biomarker of water balance in children with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 90 children; sixty-eight children suffering from PMNE aged (9.57 ± 2.16) years and 22 healthy children with good toilet control, matched sex and age. All enuretic children were subjected to complete history taking, clinical evaluation, and bed wetting diary. Serum arginine vasopressin (AVP) …

AIM: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) are common in childhood. While the two disorders are linked, those links are still being clarified.
METHODS: This study compared sleep profiles and enuresis-related behaviours between children with NE and those without, who were referred to a tertiary sleep unit with suspected SDB, using the combination of polysomnography (PSG) and questionnaire. Continuous numerical data were analysed after adjusting for body mass index z-score.
RESULTS: The study included 52 Children (39 boys, 13 girls) aged 5-14 years. Twenty-one had enures…

BACKGROUND: One of the common pediatric issues is monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE). MNE is involuntarily urine-voiding in night sleep without lower urinary tract symptoms, such as daytime frequency, incontinence, or urgency. Alarm therapy and desmopressin have been used for treating MNE, but there is no clear comparison of the effectiveness of the two modalities.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of alarm therapy and desmopressin and strategies to improve the therapy.
METHODS: Study searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane with a time span of 2010 to …

Nocturnal enuresis is one of the side effects of valproic acid treatment, and generally underdiagnosed by clinicians. Studies reported that a variable incidence of valproic acid-induced nocturnal enuresis is 2.2% to 24% with unclear explanations of the reasons behind valproic acid-induced nocturnal enuresis. A retrospective study was carried out on 260 children (aged 5-12 years) diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy, treated with valproic acid to evaluate the nocturnal enuresis secondary to valproic acid, and to discuss the characteristics of their sleep architecture. Nocturnal enuresis was repor…

INTRODUCTION: Night-time polyuria as the dominating pathophysiological mechanism for primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) has been put in question with nocturnal detrusor overactivity and high arousal thresholds as alternatives. An earlier finding of night-time polyuria in 12% of healthy non-enuretic schoolchildren underscores that excessive night-time diuresis per se is unlikely the major cause of PMNE.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the night-time diuresis pattern in children with and without PMNE and to evaluate the role of night-time polyuria in provoki…

OBJECTIVE: To compare the frequency of spina bifida occulta (SBO) detected in patients with nocturnal enuresis (NE) and to investigate its clinical significance.
METHODS: Patients aged 6 to 15 years who were admitted to the urology clinic with NE were included in this prospective study. The control group consisted of patients who were admitted with a complaint of abdominal or lateral pain. The patients who had lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) were classified as nonmonosymptomatic NE (NMNE). Those with monosymptomatic NE were treated with desmopressine. In patients with NMNE, treatment with…

INTRODUCTION: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is an underreported symptom with a profound impact on quality of life. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of NE and its association with other lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
METHODS: A validated pelvic floor questionnaire [electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire-Pelvic Floor (ePAQ-PF)] was completed by 2302 women attending a urogynaecology clinic over a 3-year period. Association between NE and overactive bladder (OAB), stress incontinence (SUI) and nocturia was assessed using logistic regression. Subgroup ana…

OBJECTIVE: Complicated bladder dysfunctions (BD) (associated with infections/urological complications or irresponsive to treatment) are a small proportion of all cases, but are highly morbid, clinically and psychosocially. Our aim is to describe a cohort of complicated pediatric BD, using subgroup analysis to compare presentations and responses to treatment among genders, age groups, and patients with or without non-monosymptomatic enuresis (NME). We also relate severe BD to other health conditions or to social/behavioral problems and report treatment results.
