Epidemiologic-economic models and the One Health paradigm: echinococcosis and leishmaniasis, case studies in Veneto region, Northeastern Italy.

Epidemiology and health economics have systemic interdependencies. The identification of the economic outcomes of any disease is operated by overlapping its epidemiology with the economic functions of the impacted entities. This communication presents two epidemiologic-economic models designed to evaluate the economic burden of cystic echinococcosis and leishmaniasis in Veneto (Northeastern Italy). Following a One Health approach, the research integrates expertise from different disciplines and institutions and fulfilled its first stage by defining the relevant cost categories and the data col

The future of genetic case-control studies.

The case-control study design has been a veritable workhorse in epidemiological research since its inception and acceptance as a valid and valued field of inquiry. The reasons for this owe to the simplicity of the required sampling and the (potential) ease of analysis and interpretation of results. Unfortunately, there are a number of problems that plague the use of the case-control design in assessing relationships between genetic variation and disease susceptibility in the population at large. Many of these problems are entirely analogous to problems that inhere in applications of the case-c

'Omics in environmental epidemiological studies of chemical exposures: A systematic evidence map.

BACKGROUND: Systematic evidence maps are increasingly used to develop chemical risk assessments. These maps can provide an overview of available studies and relevant study information to be used for various research objectives and applications. Environmental epidemiological studies that examine the impact of chemical exposures on various 'omic profiles in human populations provide relevant mechanistic information and can be used for benchmark dose modeling to derive potential human health reference values. OBJECTIVES: To create a systematic evidence map of environmental epidemiological studie

The changing landscape of rabies epidemiology and control.

Over the past 20 years, major progress has been made in our understanding of critical aspects of rabies epidemiology and control. This paper presents results of recent research, highlighting methodological advances that have been applied to burden of disease studies, rabies epidemiological modelling and rabies surveillance. These results contribute new insights and understanding with regard to the epidemiology of rabies and help to counteract misperceptions that currently hamper rabies control efforts in Africa. The conclusion of these analyses is that the elimination of canine rabies in Afric

Establishment of a southern breast cancer cohort.

Breast cancer continues to be among the most common cancers affecting women in the United States. Researchers investigating the area are turning their attention to novel prevention, detection, and treatment options. Recent molecular epidemiology research has highlighted the effects of both genetic and environmental exposures on an individual's risk of developing breast cancer and predicted response to treatment. Cohort designs are a potentially powerful tool that researchers can utilize to investigate the genetic and environmental factors affecting breast cancer risk and treatment options. Thi

Mendelian randomization studies of periodontitis: Understanding benefits and natural limitations in an applied context.

Mendelian randomization (MR) is a flexible analytical tool that has been widely applied to strengthen causal inference in observational epidemiology and is now gaining attention in many areas including periodontal research. The interpretation of results drawn from MR is based on a series of assumptions, which can be unrealistic or difficult to meet faithfully in some settings. However, we argue that with care, this does not necessarily prevent valuable deployment of the approach. We argue that clarity of presentation as well as careful assessment of specific analytical conditions is a fundamen

Examining covariate-specific treatment effects in individual participant data meta-analysis: Framing aggregation bias in terms of trial-level confounding and funnel plots.

To understand a treatment's potential impact at the individual level, it is crucial to explore whether the effect differs across patient subgroups and covariate values. Meta-analysis provides an important tool for detecting treatment-covariate interactions, as it can improve power compared to a single study. However, aggregation bias can occur when estimating individual-level treatment-covariate interactions in meta-analysis, due to trial-level confounding. This refers to when the association between the covariate and treatment effect across trials (at the aggregate level) differs from that ob

Protocol of a thyroid cancer longitudinal study (T-CALOS): a prospective, clinical and epidemiological study in Korea.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid cancer incidence in Korea is the highest in the world and has recently increased steeply. However, factors contributing to this sudden increase have not been fully elucidated, and few studies have explored the postoperative prognosis. The Thyroid Cancer Longitudinal Study (T-CALOS) was initiated with three aims: (1) to identify factors predicting quality of life, recurrence, and incidence of other diseases after thyroid cancer treatments; (2) to investigate environmental exposure to radiation, toxicants and molecular factors in relation to tumour aggressiveness; and (3) t

The definition of pneumonia, the assessment of severity, and clinical standardization in the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health study.

To develop a case definition for the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) project, we sought a widely acceptable classification that was linked to existing pneumonia research and focused on very severe cases. We began with the World Health Organization's classification of severe/very severe pneumonia and refined it through literature reviews and a 2-stage process of expert consultation. PERCH will study hospitalized children, aged 1-59 months, with pneumonia who present with cough or difficulty breathing and have either severe pneumonia (lower chest wall indrawing) or very seve

German multicenter study group for adult ALL (GMALL): recruitment in comparison to ALL incidence and its impact on study results.

Due to eligibility criteria not all patients with the disease under investigation can be recruited for therapeutic studies. Thus, the external validity of study results cannot per se be taken for granted. The representativity of the admitted patients is the most relevant determinant for external validity and has to be assessed. As an example we examined the representativity of the patients recruited for the German multicenter study group for adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (GMALL). Lacking nationwide ALL incidence figures available in Germany, a methodology was developed to estimate i

The incidence of injuries in young people: I. Methodology and results of a collaborative study in Brazil, Chile, Cuba and Venezuela.

Injuries and accidents are acknowledged as leading causes of mortality among children and adolescents in the developing countries of the world. However, little is known of the extent of non-fatal injuries and of their potential risk factors. The Pan American Health Organization sponsored the first collaborative study to examine morbidity incidence in specified areas of four selected countries in Latin America, and to test the feasibility and practicality of the developed methodology for application in other regions of the world. The study subjects were injured children and adolescents (0-19 ye

Oral contraceptives and cardiovascular disease: a critique of the epidemiologic studies.

Observational study designs used to investigate the relationship of oral contraceptive use to the occurrence of venous thromboembolism, stroke, myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular death include case-control, cohort, and mortality statistics studies. This analysis catalogs the findings of each of these epidemiologic studies, its statistical significance, and its performance with regard to scientific methodologic standards. An association between current oral contraceptive use and incidence of venous thromboembolism without predisposition has been consistently observed in case-control and

[Sporotrichosis and paracoccidioidomycosis in Peru: experiences in prevention and control].

The epidemiological picture of sporotrichosis and paracoccidioidomycosis in Peru and Latin America is sporadic, fragmented, and geographically limited, mainly due to lack of mandatory reporting and limited diagnostic coverage. However, research contributions related to understanding the interaction of these fungi, the response of the host and the environment, the use of spatial analysis that relates the distribution of these mycoses, population density and climate, contributes to the design of prevention and control strategies of these mycosis and suggest epidemiological risk maps management,
