Epidemiological analysis of varicella in Dalian from 2009 to 2019 and application of three kinds of model in prediction prevalence of varicella.

OBJECTIVE: This study described the epidemic characteristics of varicella in Dalian from 2009 to 2019, explored the fitting effect of Grey model first-order one variable( GM(1,1)), Markov model, and GM(1,1)-Markov model on varicella data, and found the best fitting method for this type of data, to better predict the incidence trend. METHODS: For this Cross-sectional study, this article was completed in 2020, and the data collection is up to 2019. Due to the global epidemic, the infectious disease data of Dalian in 2020 itself does not conform to the normal changes of varicella and is not incl

Epidemiologic-economic models and the One Health paradigm: echinococcosis and leishmaniasis, case studies in Veneto region, Northeastern Italy.

Epidemiology and health economics have systemic interdependencies. The identification of the economic outcomes of any disease is operated by overlapping its epidemiology with the economic functions of the impacted entities. This communication presents two epidemiologic-economic models designed to evaluate the economic burden of cystic echinococcosis and leishmaniasis in Veneto (Northeastern Italy). Following a One Health approach, the research integrates expertise from different disciplines and institutions and fulfilled its first stage by defining the relevant cost categories and the data col

Disease burden of hepatitis C in the Austrian state of Tyrol - Epidemiological data and model analysis to achieve elimination by 2030.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) and 69th World Health Assembly approved the first global health sector strategy (GHSS) on viral hepatitis with the goal to eliminate hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections worldwide. The aim is a 90% reduction of new infections and 65% reduction of HCV-related deaths by 2030. AIM: This study reports on the epidemiology of HCV infections in the Austrian state of Tyrol (total population 750,000) and uses a predictive model to identify how the WHO strategy for elimination of HCV can be achieved. METHODS: We developed a regional disease burden

Opportunities and challenges for modelling epidemiological and evolutionary dynamics in a multihost, multiparasite system: Zoonotic hybrid schistosomiasis in West Africa.

Multihost multiparasite systems are evolutionarily and ecologically dynamic, which presents substantial trans-disciplinary challenges for elucidating their epidemiology and designing appropriate control. Evidence for hybridizations and introgressions between parasite species is gathering, in part in line with improvements in molecular diagnostics and genome sequencing. One major system where this is becoming apparent is within the Genus Schistosoma, where schistosomiasis represents a disease of considerable medical and veterinary importance, the greatest burden of which occurs in sub-Saharan A

An exploration of the role of asymptomatic infections in the epidemiology of dengue viruses through susceptible, asymptomatic, infected and recovered (SAIR) models.

It is estimated that 20-97% of all dengue infections could be asymptomatic. I used SIR models to investigate the epidemiological role of such infections, by adding an asymptomatic class (SAIR models). Upon infection in one of the models, a human becomes either symptomatic or asymptomatic. In the other, a human becomes asymptomatic and may progress to being symptomatic. The robustness of results from these models is examined by incorporating the mosquito-vector into one of the models, followed by simulating epidemic dynamics stochastically. Results from the first two models were very similar, w

The Epidemiology of Herpes Zoster After Varicella Immunization Under Different Biological Hypotheses: Perspectives From Mathematical Modeling.

The impact of varicella vaccination on the epidemiology of herpes zoster (HZ) critically depends on the mechanism of immunological boosting, through which reexposures to varicella-zoster virus are thought to reduce the individual risk of HZ development. However, the qualitative and quantitative dynamics of this process are largely unknown. Consequently, mathematical models evaluating immunization strategies need to rely on theoretical assumptions. Available varicella-zoster virus models can be classified in 3 main families according to the postulated effect of exogenous boosting: 1) progressiv

Predictive and epidemiologic modeling of the spatial risk of human onchocerciasis using biophysical factors: a case study of Ghana and Burundi.

Although recent efforts taken have substantially contained human onchocerciasis in many African countries, published reports indicate a recrudescence of the disease. To understand this problem, biophysical factors that favor the establishment of human onchocerciasis in Ghana and Burundi-countries identified as threat locations of recrudescence for neighboring countries-were analyzed. Data pertaining to the prevalence of human onchocerciasis in both countries was obtained from published sources. Findings in this study suggest that there was a gradient in prevalence of onchocerciasis in geograph

Spatial modeling of human risk of exposure to vector-borne pathogens based on epidemiological versus arthropod vector data.

Understanding spatial patterns of human risk of exposure to arthropod vectors and their associated pathogens is critical for targeting limited prevention, surveillance, and control resources (e.g., spatial targeting of vaccination, drug administration, or education campaigns; use of sentinel sites to monitor vector abundance; and identifying areas for most effective use of pesticides). Vector-borne disease risk can, in many cases, be modeled with high predictive accuracy by using geographic information system approaches because abundances of vectors and pathogen reservoirs often are associated

The ovine cysticercosis as models for research into the epidemiology and control of the human and porcine cysticercosis Taenia solium: II. The application of control.

Field trials and control programmes demonstrate that ovine echinococcosis (Echinococcus granulosus) and the cysticercoses (Taenia hydatigena and T. ovis) have different stabilities and may not respond in the same way to control. The first-named, which is usually in the endemic state, is readily transformed by a dog-dosing programme to extinction status. In contrast, the cysticercoses, usually in the hyperendemic state, may only be transformed to the endemic state. The consequence of this includes an increase in the larval population by superinfection due to a loss of immunity following this ch

The World Health Organization 2030 goals for Taenia solium: Insights and perspectives from transmission dynamics modelling: CystiTeam Group for Epidemiology and Modelling of Taenia solium Taeniasis/Cysticercosis.

Taenia solium (TS), responsible for porcine cysticercosis, human taeniasis and (neuro)cysticercosis, was included in the World Health Organization neglected tropical disease (NTD) roadmap published in 2012. Targets set in this roadmap have not been met, but T. solium has been included in the consultation process for the new 2030 goals proposed for priority NTDs. Taenia solium transmission dynamics models can contribute to this process. A recent review has compared existing T. solium transmission models, identifying their similarities and differences in structure, parameterization and modelled

The effect of alcohol minimum unit pricing and cancer warning labels on cancer incidence and mortality in Canada: an epidemiological modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption increases cancer risk and is responsible for substantial cancer incidence and mortality. Alcohol policies have the potential to reduce cancer burden but remain under-implemented. Several Canadian jurisdictions are considering minimum unit pricing (MUP) and alcohol warning label (AWL) strategies. We aimed to assess the effect of these policies on cancer incidence and mortality in Canada. METHODS: We estimated baseline counts of alcohol-attributable cancer incident cases and mortalities in Canada, 2022, and modelled the effect of five alcohol policy scenarios com

Quantifying Epidemiological Risk Transitions of COVID-19 in the Brazilian State of Ceará (2020-2023): A Generalized Linear Modeling Approach.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: While the descriptive trajectory of COVID-19 is well-documented, there is a methodological gap in quantifying the precise magnitude of risk reduction across multi-year pandemic phases in Brazilian subnational units. This study aimed to fill this gap by applying Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) to quantify the temporal transition of epidemiological risks (Incidence, Mortality, and Case Fatality) in Ceará (2020-2023), using the first year of the pandemic as a statistical baseline. METHODS: Ecological time-series study was conducted using official surveillance data. We emp

Optimal Control Theory Applied to Rabies Epidemiological Model with Time-dependent Vaccination in Davao City, Mindanao Island, Philippines.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rabies continues to be a challenge in Davao City despite the efforts of the city's local government to vaccinate primarily the non-stray dog population. Meanwhile, studies have shown that time-dependent vaccination strategy is considered a prime factor for a cost-effective rabies control strategy. Hence, this study aims to provide information that will determine the optimal vaccination strategy targeted to the stray dog population that minimizes the rabies-infected dog population and vaccination costs using optimal control theory (OCT). METHODS: OCT is used to identi

Modelling the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of possible changes to the meningococcal vaccination schedule for adolescents and young adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. adolescent meningococcal vaccination schedule includes a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) dose at 11–12 years, a booster at 16 years, and—through shared clinical decision-making—a meningococcal serogroup B vaccine (MenB) series at 16 years and 6 months later (Q-QB-B schedule). This study evaluates the public health impact and cost-effectiveness of possible revisions to the schedule, considering the options currently under review by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). METHODS: We used a static, incidence-based population model to c

Epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus in a large pediatric hospital in Central Italy and development of a forecasting model to predict the seasonal peak.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is responsible for the majority of acute lower respiratory infections in infants and can affect also older age groups. Restrictions linked to the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and their subsequent lifting caused a change in the dynamics of RSV circulation. It is therefore fundamental to monitor RSV seasonal trends and to be able to predict its seasonal peak to be prepared to the next RSV epidemics. METHODS: We performed a retrospective descriptive study on laboratory-confirmed RSV infections from Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome fro

Mathematical epidemiological modeling and analysis of monkeypox dynamism with non-pharmaceutical intervention using real data from United Kingdom.

In this study, a mathematical model for studying the dynamics of monkeypox virus transmission with non-pharmaceutical intervention is created, examined, and simulated using real-time data. Positiveness, invariance, and boundedness of the solutions are thus examined as fundamental features of mathematical models. The equilibrium points and the prerequisites for their stability are achieved. The basic reproduction number and thus the virus transmission coefficient ℜ0 were determined and quantitatively used to study the global stability of the model's steady state. Furthermore, this study conside

Measurement of Intermediate Frequency Magnetic Fields Generated by Household Induction Cookers for Epidemiological Studies and Development of an Exposure Estimation Model.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure assessment of intermediate frequency (IF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is difficult and epidemiological studies are limited. In the present study, we aimed to estimate the exposure of pregnant women to IF-EMFs generated by induction cookers in the household using a questionnaire and discussed its applicability to epidemiological studies. METHOD: Two main home-visit surveys were conducted: a Phase 1 survey to develop an estimation model and a Phase 2 survey to validate the model. The estimation model included the following variables: wattage, cookware diameter, and dist
