Resistive exercises, with or without whole body vibration, prevent vertebral marrow fat accumulation during 60 days of head-down tilt bed rest in men.

Fat accumulates in the bone marrow of lumbar vertebrae with bed rest. Exercise with or without whole body vibration may counter this effect. … roup had a smaller VFF change than the CTR group at end-HDT (-2.6 ± 1.9 vs. +3.5 ± 1.2%, P < 0.05). Erythrocyte counts were increased in all groups at HDT day 19 and HDT day 33 and in the RE group at HDT day 54 (all P < 0.05). Bed rest for 60 days at -6° HDT increased lumbar VFF in men beyond natural involution. RVE and RE regimens effectively prevented VFF accumul …

Rheology of red blood cells in patients with HbC disease.

Patients with hemoglobin C disease (CC) usually do not develop severe complications in comparison with individuals with sickle cell anemia (SS) or with sickle cell hemoglobin C disease (SC). The present study compared the hematological, biochemical, hemorheological and clinical characteristics of CC patients to those of SS, SC and healthy individuals (AA). Blood viscosity was measured at 225 s(-1) with a cone plate viscometer. The hematocrit-to-blood viscosity ratio (HVR), i.e. an index of red blood cell (RBC) oxygen transport effectiveness, was calculated. RBC deformability was determined at

70-year old female patient with mismatch between hematocrit and hemoglobin values: the effects of cold agglutinin on complete blood count.

INTRODUCTION: There are a number of pre-analytical and analytical factors, which cause false results in the complete blood count. The present case identifies cold agglutinins as the cause for the mismatch between hematocrit and hemoglobin values. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 70-year old female patient had a history of cerebrovascular diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. During routine laboratory examination, the patient had normal leukocyte and platelet counts; however, the hemoglobin (Hb: 105 g/L) and hematocrit (HCT: 0.214 L/L) results were discordant. Hemolysis, lipemia and cold agglutinin were ev

[Changes in hemograms of patients with epidemic typhoid].

In typhoid epidemy in Tadjikistan we studied hemograms obtained in 200 patients and 100 healthy controls matched by age. Though hematological shifts are considered to be typical of typhoid, most of the patients had no hematological disorders despite their severe condition. Hemograms were normal in half of the patients at the height of typhoid while other patients often (40-43%) had accelerated ESR, uneosinophilia and left shift of immature neutrophils.

Trilineage response to granulocyte colony-stimulating factor administration in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome.

We report a 72-year-old man with refractory anemia with excess of blasts who presented severe pancytopenia and pneumonia and received granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment over a 6-week period. In addition to a dramatic increase in mature neutrophils, platelet count and hemoglobin level, the patient achieved a hematological remission which continued for more than 5 months despite discontinuation of the treatment. This observation confirms that in some cases during G-CSF treatment erythropoiesis and thrombopoiesis may improve in addition to the expected effect on neutrophils.

Procainamide-associated pancytopenia.

A 42-year-old male developed thrombocytopenia and anemia along with agranulocytosis during treatment with procainamide. Bone marrow hypoplasia was evident on biopsy, and the patient was without evidence of systemic lupus erythematosis. He had prompt marrow recovery on drug withdrawal. While procainamide-induced agranulocytosis has been reported on a number of occasions, this is only the second case of pancytopenia.

Acute transverse myelitis in COVID-19 infection.

A 60-year-old man presented to hospital with bilateral lower limb weakness, urinary retention and constipation. He had been diagnosed with COVID-19 10 days prior. Clinical examination revealed global weakness, increased tone, hyperreflexia and patchy paresthesia in his lower limbs bilaterally. Preliminary blood tests performed revealed a mildly elevated C reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate but was otherwise unremarkable. MRI scan of his whole spine demonstrated hyperintense T2 signal centrally from T7 to T10, suggestive of acute transverse myelitis. A lumbar puncture showed el

Calprotectin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: relation to clinical and laboratory variables of disease activity.

Calprotectin (L1) is a major granulocyte and monocyte protein which is released during activation of these cells. The plasma level of L1 is thought to reflect disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In our cross sectional study of 70 patients with RA, L1 had significant correlations with erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r = 0.50), C-reactive protein (r = 0.58), orosomucoid (r = 0.62), platelet count (r = 0.42), leukocyte count (r = 0.33) and IgM rheumatoid factor (r = 0.32); and with the following clinical variables: number of swollen joints (r = 0.24), grip strength (r = -0.22), PIP joi

Rheological red blood cell behaviour in minor α-thalassaemia carriers.

Although several studies have been published regarding rheological behaviour of red blood cells in beta and delta-beta thalassaemia traits, little information about erythrocyte deformability in alpha-thalassaemia carriers is available. We aimed to determine erythrocyte deformability in heterozygous (silent, -α/αα) and homozygous (minor alpha-thalassaemia, -α/-α) carriers of the alpha-thalassaemia trait for the alpha 3.7 deletion, the most common in our geographical area. We evaluated erythrocyte deformability by means of the elongation index (EI) in a Rheodyn SSD at 12, 30 and 60 Pa, along wit

[Protein concentrations in the ejaculate of patients with chronic prostatitis].

In 158 patients suffering from chronic prostatitis and 23 healthy men seminal fluid concentrations of IgG, IgA, C3c, coeruloplasmin, alpha-1-antitrypsin and alpha-1-glycoprotein were determined by immunodiffusion. Concentration of IgG is closely correlated to leucocyte counts, that of IgG, C3c, and coeruloplasmin to erythrocyte counts. C3c, coeruloplasmin, alapha-1-glycoprotein and alpha-1-antitrypsin are further correlated to sperm counts. IgG and C3c concentrations are related to pathogenetic factors. If pathogenic bacteria are found, they are significantly higher than in patients with mycop…

2021 update of the 2012 ICSH Recommendations for identification, diagnostic value, and quantitation of schistocytes: Impact and revisions.

In 2012, the International Council for Standardization in Hematology (ICSH) published recommendations for the identification, quantitation, and diagnostic value of schistocytes. In the present review, the impact of these recommendations is evaluated. This work is based on citations in peer-reviewed papers published since 2012. The first 2012 ICSH Recommendations have also been revised to incorporate newly published data in the literature and current best laboratory practice. Recommended reference ranges have been proposed for healthy adults and full-term neonates of 1% or less schistocytes. Mo

[Aregenerative anemia and erythrocytes hemighosts: a case report].

An 11 year old African boy without previous history was hospitalised for fever and a severe anaemia (haemoglobin = 55 g/L) with low reticulocyte count. Blood smear showed more than 35% of ghost red blood cells which allows the diagnosis of G6PD deficiency (< 1% of normal level). Anaemia was demonstrated as haemolytic and was associated with a drepanocytosis trait. Aspect of red blood cells on blood smear remains important for the diagnosis of congenital or acquired red blood cell diseases, even abnormalities are often of low specificity.

[Blood protein-volume indicators in massive plasmapheresis].

Hyperproteinemia values were studied before and after plasmapheresis in 32 rheumatoid arthritis patients with no manifest circulatory disorders. Mathematical patterns enabling prediction of changes in protein concentration depending on the volume of removed plasma and the type of substitution have been proposed for 3 alternative regimens of the procedure (removal of 0.5 or 1.0 volume of the circulating plasma, and substitution for rheopolyglucin or albumin). The data of independent "examining" sampling (15 patients) have proved adequacy of the linear regression patterns.

Industrial exposure to organophosphorus compounds. Studies of a group of workers with a decrease in esterase-staining monocytes.

When an automated counting instrument using an esterase stain was employed, decreased monocyte counts were observed in a group of process workers exposed to organophosphate esters. Their monocyte counts were not found to be depressed with manual counting or with an automated counter using another staining method. The apparent depression was transient. In these workers and a comparison group, theoretical adverse consequences of decreased monocyte esterase and also possible changes in other esterases were explored. No anergy was seen with mumps or staphylococcal phage lysate hypersensitivity ski

Diphenyl diselenide protects against hematological and immunological alterations induced by mercury in mice.

Mercury is a heavy metal that can cause a variety of toxic effects on the organism, such as hematological and immunological alterations. In the present investigation, deleterious effects of mercury-intoxication in mice and a possible protective effect of diphenyl diselenide (PhSe)(2) were studied. Male adult Swiss albino mice received daily a pretreatment with (PhSe)(2) (15.6 mg/kg, orally) for 1 week. After this week, mice received daily mercuric chloride (1 mg/kg, subcutaneously) for 2 weeks. A number of hematological (erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, reticulocyte
