Impact of Low-Dose Cranberry Polyphenols on Gut Microbiota and Circulating Polyphenol Metabolites in Overweight and Obese Individuals (A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Clinical Pilot Study).

Cranberry polyphenols reach the colon largely unmetabolized, where they interact with the gut microbiota to generate bioactive metabolites. However, few human studies have examined both the microbial and systemic metabolic responses to cranberry polyphenol intake, particularly in populations with metabolic risk. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study, 45 overweight or obese adults received either cranberry juice providing 54.5 mg/day of total polyphenols or a placebo for 6 weeks. Serum and urinary polyphenol metabolites were quantified via UPLC-MS/MS, and gut microbio

Investigating the causal role of gut microbiota in zoster infection and its complications: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Zoster infection, or herpes zoster (HZ), caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), frequently manifests as painful vesicular rashes and may progress to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Observational studies suggest a potential association between gut microbiota changes and both the infection and neuropathic pain, yet causality remains uncertain. This study conducted a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using summarized data from publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on the gut microbiota, zoster infection, and PHN. To ascertain causality, we used 5 MR method

Integrated Microbiome and Metabolome Analysis Reveals Hypothalamic-Comorbidities Related Signatures in Craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngioma (CP) is an intracranial tumor with high mortality and morbidity. Though biologically benign, CP will damage the hypothalamus, inducing comorbidities such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cognitive impairments. The roles of gut microbiome and serum metabolome in CP-associated hypothalamic comorbidities are aimed to be explored. Patients with CP are characterized by increased Shannon diversity, Eubacterium, Clostridium, and Roseburia, alongside decreased Alistipes and Bacteroides. CP-enriched taxa are positively correlated with dyslipidemia and cognitive decline, while CP-de

Dissecting the association between gut microbiota and hypertrophic scarring: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Hypertrophic scars affect a significant number of individuals annually, giving rise to both cosmetic concerns and functional impairments. Prior research has established that an imbalance in the composition of gut microbes, termed microbial dysbiosis, can initiate the progression of various diseases through the intricate interplay between gut microbiota and the host. However, the precise nature of the causal link between gut microbiota and hypertrophic scarring remains uncertain. In this study, after compiling summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) involving 418 instances of g

Landscape in the gallbladder mycobiome and bacteriome of patients undergoing cholelithiasis with chronic cholecystitis.

Gallstone disease (GSD) is associated with changes in the gut and gallbladder bacterial composition, but there is limited information on the role of the fungal community (mycobiome) in disease development. This study aimed to characterize the gallbladder mycobiome profiles and their interactions with bacteriome in GSD. A total of 136 bile and gallstone samples (34 paired for bacteriome, and 33 paired and extra 2 bile samples for mycobiome) were obtained from calculi patients with chronic cholecystitis. Bile and gallstone bacteriome and mycobiome were profiled by 16S and internal transcribed sp

Involvement of microbiota and short-chain fatty acids on non-alcoholic steatohepatitis when induced by feeding a hypercaloric diet rich in saturated fat and fructose.

Consumption of high-energy-yielding diets, rich in fructose and lipids, is a factor contributing to the current increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence. Gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production alterations derived from unhealthy diets are considered putative underlying mechanisms. This study aimed to determine relationships between changes in gut microbiota composition and SCFA levels by comparing rats featuring diet-induced steatohepatitis with control counterparts fed a standard diet. A high-fat high-fructose (HFHF) feeding induced higher bod

Environment-Dependent Variation in Gut Microbiota of an Oviparous Lizard (Calotes versicolor).

Vertebrates maintain complex symbiotic relationships with microbiota living within their gastrointestinal tracts which reflects the ecological and evolutionary relationship between hosts and their gut microbiota. However, this understanding is limited in lizards and the spatial heterogeneity and co-occurrence patterns of gut microbiota inside the gastrointestinal tracts of a host and variations of microbial community among samples remain poorly understood. To address this issue and provide a guide for gut microbiota sampling from lizards, we investigated the bacteria in three gut locations of

Correlation among gut microbiota, fecal metabolites and autism-like behavior in an adolescent valproic acid-induced rat autism model.

This study aims to understand the relationship between fecal metabolites and gut microbiota in an adolescent valproic acid-induced rat autism model (VPA-exposed offspring). We analyzed the fecal samples of VPA-exposed offspring using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. Autism-like behavior was evaluated by a three-chamber sociability test and a self-grooming test. Based on these data, we analyzed the association among fecal metabolites, gut microbiota and autism-like behavior. Behavioral tests showed that VPA-exposed offspring displayed typical autism-like behavior. Forty-nin

Relationship between gut microbiome diversity and hepatitis B viral load in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is associated with a reduced risk of developing dyslipidemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. Given that the gut microbiota plays a significant role in cholesterol metabolism, we compared the differences in gut microbial diversity and composition between HBV-infected and uninfected subjects. RESULTS: A prospective case-control study was designed comprising healthy controls (group A) and HBV-infected individuals (group B) in a 1:1 ratio (57 participants each; total = 114). The patients in group B were divided into two subgroups according to

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Types Differ in Markers of Inflammation, Gut Barrier and in Specific Anti-Bacterial Response.

Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) associated with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC-IBD), share three major pathogenetic mechanisms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-gut dysbiosis, gut barrier failure and immune system dysregulation. While clinical differences among them are well known, the underlying mechanisms are less explored. To gain an insight into the IBD pathogenesis and to find a specific biomarker pattern for each of them, we used protein array, ELISA and flow cytometry to analyze serum biomarkers and specific anti-microbial B and

Effect of inulin supplementation on selected gastric, duodenal, and caecal microbiota and short chain fatty acid pattern in growing piglets.

We explored whether bifidobacteria and lactobacilli numbers and other selected bacteria in the upper intestine and the caecum of growing pigs were affected by diet and intake of inulin. Starting at two weeks after weaning (28 d) 72 pigs were fed two types of diets (wheat/barley (WB) or maize/gluten (MG)), without or with 3% inulin (WB + I, MG + I) for three and six weeks. Intestinal bacteria were quantified by fluorescence-in-situ-hybridization (n = 8/group). Duration of feeding had no effect on the variables tested, so data for both periods were pooled. Gastric total bacteria amounted to log(

Cryptosporidium parvum appears to lack a plastid genome.

Surprisingly, unlike most Apicomplexa, Cryptosporidium parvum appears to lack a plastid genome. Primers based upon the highly conserved plastid small- or large-subunit rRNA (SSU/LSU rRNA) and the tufA-tRNAPhe genes of other members of the phylum Apicomplexa failed to amplify products from intracellular stages of C. parvum, whereas products were obtained from the plastid-containing apicomplexans Eimeria bovis and Toxoplasma gondii, as well as the plants Allium stellatum and Spinacia oleracea. Dot-blot hybridization of sporozoite genomic DNA (gDNA) supported these PCR results. A T. gondii plasti

An altered gut microbiota is associated with anthropometric and biochemical changes in a prediabetes Mexican cohort.

An altered gut microbiota is considered to be an environmental factor contributing to the pathogenesis of various diseases, including metabolic disorders. In this study, we identified changes in the composition of the fecal microbiota of Mexican individuals with prediabetes and analyzed their influences on variables related to this metabolic disorder. Bacterial DNA was extracted from feces of normoglycemic and prediabetes individuals, followed by sequencing of the V4 16S rDNA. Clinical variables were correlated with bacterial abundance and diversity indexes. LEfSe analysis was used to identify
