The meaning of spiritual care in a pediatric setting.

In the previous issue of the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, one type of evidence-based practice (EBP) format was provided for potential nurse scholars who utilize the EBP process [MacPhee, M. (2002). Journal of Pediatric Nursing, 17(4);313-20]. There are, however, many potential formats to present evidence-based clinical practice innovations. I am eager to work with nurses who have been involved in promoting evidence-based nursing practice. The Journal of Pediatric Nursing will use this column as a forum for sharing evidence-based clinical practice innovations, such as case studies, clinical te…

[Practice guideline for adult burn rehabilitation nursing (2026 edition)].

Burn patients are often accompanied by problems such as functional and psychological impairments, difficulties in social adaptation. Rehabilitation nursing plays an important role in functional recovery, complication prevention, and improvement of quality of life. To further assist nurses in implementing adult burn rehabilitation nursing in a scientific and standardized manner, the guideline writing group, based on evidence from evidence-based medicine and guided by the Delphi method, developed 16 recommendations addressing 11 clinical questions in adult burn rehabilitation nursing. These reco

Research progress on the intervention of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine nursing for diabetic foot.

Diabetic foot (DF) is a serious disabling, recurrent chronic complication of diabetes. While integrated Chinese-Western nursing for DF is widely studied, few systematic reviews frame relevant research based on the nursing process. This narrative review systematically retrieved literature from major Chinese and English databases up to December 2025, sorting included studies into nursing assessment, intervention and health education to assess evidence quality, analyze synergistic mechanisms of dual nursing modes, and verify their benefits in lowering amputation risk, accelerating wound repair an

An evidence-based approach to urinary catheter changes.

Many people in the community have a urinary catheter that is routinely changed by a community nurse. People with urinary catheters can experience a number of problems including catheter blockages. A blocked catheter causes great distress and inconvenience to the person and places a strain on the resources of community nursing organizations because of the need for unscheduled visits to change the catheter. A procedure that enabled catheter changes to be planned before they blocked would reduce patient distress and better assist community nursing organizations with resource management. The plann

Neonatal abstinence syndrome in countries with no to low medical opioid consumption: a scoping review.

AIM: To describe the current state of evidence on the care of neonates with neonatal abstinence syndrome in countries with low to virtually no medical opioid analgesic consumption. BACKGROUND: While access to opioids for medical use improves globally, misuse grows as a health concern. One unintended consequence has been an increase in the incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome. Because most evidence is generated in countries with adequate opioid analgesic consumption, a picture of evidence in lower opioid-consuming countries is not available. DESIGN: A scoping review methodology was emplo

Venous thromboembolism after fibula fracture: a patient's perspective.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant healthcare issue in the United States. This article presents information on the scope of the problem of VTE through a case study demonstrating the physical and psychosocial experiences of a 24-year-old woman with a fibula fracture treated in a short leg cast who developed a deep vein thrombosis that went on to become a pulmonary embolism. The patient experience is evaluated and supported by literature review in terms of risk factors as well as diagnostic, prophylaxis, medical treatment, and nursing implications. Analysis of a patient experience wit

Lower extremity orthoses in children with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy: implications for nurses, parents, and caregivers.

Understanding trends in the prevalence of children with cerebral palsy is vital to evaluating and estimating supportive services for children, families, and caregivers. The majority of children with cerebral palsy require lower extremity orthoses to stabilize their muscles. The pediatric nurse needs a special body of knowledge to accurately assess, apply, manage, teach, and evaluate the use of lower extremity orthoses typically prescribed for this vulnerable population. Inherent in caring for these children is the need to teach the child, the family, and significant others the proper applicati

Care of urinary catheters and drainage systems.

A question about the reuse of drainable urinary catheter night drainage bags in a patient's home promoted the South East Thames continence advisory group to examine the evidence for the management of urinary catheter drainage systems. The objective of this review was to establish if there is evidence available to support clinical practice and provide recommendations to staff and patients to ensure best practice.

Practices that minimize trauma to the genital tract in childbirth: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Trauma to the genital tract commonly occurs at birth, and can cause short- and long-term morbidity. Clinical measures to reduce its occurrence have not been fully identified. METHODS: A systematic review of the English language literature was conducted to describe the current state of knowledge on reduction of genital tract trauma before planning a large randomized controlled trial of ways to prevent such trauma. Randomized trials and other published reports were identified from relevant databases and hand searches. Studies were reviewed and assessed using a structured format. RE

Using the i-PARIHS theoretical framework to develop evidence implementation strategies for central venous catheter maintenance: a multi-site quality improvement project.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based nursing practice can reduce complications associated with central venous catheters (CVCs). In this project, the Integrated Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (i-PARIHS) framework was considered an ideal theoretical instrument to identify facilitators and barriers to implementing evidence-based practice. METHODS: The project was conducted in pediatric intensive care units in six Chinese tertiary children's hospitals. Twenty-two audit criteria were obtained from best practice recommendations, and a baseline audit was conducted to assess c…

Reducing and managing faecal incontinence in people with advanced dementia who are resident in care homes: protocol for a realist synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Faecal incontinence (FI) is the involuntary loss of liquid or solid stool that is a social or hygienic problem. The prevalence of FI in residents of care homes is high, but it is not an inevitable consequence of old age or dementia. There is good evidence on risk factors, but few studies provide evidence about effective interventions. There is a need to understand how, why, and in what circumstances particular programmes to reduce and manage FI are effective (or not) for people with dementia. The purpose of this review is to identify which (elements of the) interventions could po

A review of hemodialysis vascular access devices: improving client outcomes through evidence-based practice.

The number of clients with end-stage renal disease and acute kidney injury requiring kidney replacement therapy is at an all-time high. At the end of 2010, the number of persons in the United States with end-stage renal disease totaled 594,374. Because the majority of clients select hemodialysis, understanding best-practice techniques to prevent infection is paramount. The purpose of this article is to review best-practice recommendations for care of the 3 major vascular access devices used for hemodialysis, with a particular focus on infection prevention recommendations. Implications for infu
