The evaluation of visual potentials (VEP) evoked by pattern reversal includes the latency and amplitude of P100. An increase in the mean brightness or contrast of the checkerboard stimulus results in an increase in amplitude and a decrease in latency of P100. A square edge subtense of 20' in checkerboard pattern or a spatial frequency of 3-4 cyc/degrees in stripe pattern produce maximum responses. Transient VEPs are recorded at low repetition rates (less than 2 Hz), steady state VEPs at temporal frequencies above 8 Hz. In the latter condition the VEP takes the character of a sinusoidal train o

The present paper reviews strengths and weaknesses of evoked potentials (EPs) as an index of toxic insult to the nervous system. EPs are obtained by averaging successive samples of EEG time-locked to the presentation of stimuli. Components of the resulting waveform can be measured for amplitude, latency, and distribution. Normal ranges of these parameters have been characterized for auditory, visual and somatosensory stimuli. Auditory EPs have been studied in humans exposed to lead, trichloroethylene, and carbon monoxide. Changes in timing of short latency components and in amplitude of later …

Visual evoked cortical and sub-cortical potentials are complementary to the electroretinogram in neuro-ophthalmology. By combining monocular stimulation with recordings from over the visual cortex of each cerebral hemisphere it is possible to accurately locate lesions which are both pre and post chiasmal. Chiasmal lesions can also be correctly identified using these techniques. The visual evoked sub-cortical potential, probably arising from a lateral geniculate or tectal site allows further post chiasmal variation. Flash and pattern reversal stimulation provide different information about the

Cortical excitability after myoclonus was investigated by electrically stimulating the median nerve just at the time of, or at intervals after, the onset of myoclonus and by averaging the EEG and EMG, using the myoclonus onset pulse as a trigger (jerk-locked somatosensory evoked potential technique). In a patient with "cortical reflex" myoclonus, cortical excitability was relatively enhanced for 20 msec just after the myoclonus, although it was suppressed throughout the postmyoclonus period. In a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, cortical excitability was suppressed between periodic myoc

Recent advances in the field of sensory evoked potentials (EPs) have allowed assessment of function in regions of the nervous system that were previously inaccessible to noninvasive electrophysiologic study. Pattern visual and brainstem auditory EPs, respectively, are more sensitive to certain optic nerve or posterior fossa lesions than either clinical or laboratory tests. Short-latency somatosensory EPs from the upper and lower extremities are sensitive to pathology at cervicomedullary and thoracolumbar levels of the neuraxis as well as to suprasegmental lesions. This article reviews the deve…

The brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) or, more appropriately, the auditory brain stem response (ABR) is a series of 5-7, vertex-positive, time-locked electric events. They are usually aroused by a brief, rapid onset, high intensity acoustic click or tonal pip. The vertex positive nature of the events is dictated by the placement of surface electrodes, usually featuring an active electrode on the vertex, a referent electrode on the mastoid or earlobe ipsilateral to the signal source, and a ground electrode on the forehead or other neutral tissue. The size of the ABR is sufficiently s…

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded from four patients with surgically verified chiasmal gliomas. Despite good visual acuity, 6/12(20/40) or better in each eye, these patients showed substantially reduced VEP amplitudes to a diffuse flash stimulus and hardly detectable responses to a highly textured checkerboard-pattern stimulus. The dissociation between evoked electrical activity and visual acuity is noteworthy; this differs from previously reported findings in patients with extrinsic compressing lesions of the chiasm or with lesions of demyelinating disease, which usually reduce VE…

Investigation of visual evoked potentials (VEP) by means of checkerboard inversion gives values with good reproducibility and low standard deviation for the latencies and amplitudes of VEP. In patients with scanty symptoms of cerebrovascular disease and without visual field defects, we found either differences of VEP amplitudes from side to another of over 25% (in relation to the larger value) or very small absolute values of the amplitudes (smaller than 3 mu V) as pathological values compared to control subjects. The latencies were normal. The method of investigation described helps towards o…

Using a signal-averaging system, potentials evoked by stimulation of nerves in the limbs or tail of dogs were recorded through needle electrodes placed adjacent to the vertebral column. Cord dorsum potentials (consisting of a small triphasic wave followed by a large negative peak and a subsequent slow positive phase) were recorded at the level of the lumbar enlargement after stimulating nerves in the pelvic limb or tail, and at the cervical enlargement after forelimb nerve stimulation. Ascending volleys were recorded from appropriate levels of the spinal cord or from regions of the cauda equin

Stimulation with a short tone pip elicits an acoustic nerve compound action potential (I) and different waves (II--VII) in the inital 10 ms. Seven waves have been studied in 40 control subjects and five waves in 12 patients with vertebral-basilar insufficiency. Abnormalities of the different waves were observed at levels such as cochlea and/or acoustic nerve, medulla, caudal pons, rostral pons, and midbrain. The recording of early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) is a noninvasive method of confirming impairment of the auditory pathway caused by a reduced vascular supply of vertebral and basil…

Auditory evoked potentials in the middle component time domain (post-stimulus, 8 to 50 msec) were recorded in response to 1,000-Hz tone pips in a normal-hearing adult subject. Electromyographic (EMG) responses in response to ulnar nerve shocks were recorded from the ipsilateral hypothenar muscles. With the assistance of an anesthesiologist, data were collected during a normal resting state, a state of light sedation, and a state of complete skeletal muscle paralysis from succinylcholine administration. During the paralyzed state, there was abolition of the normal EMG responses seen in the rest…

Seven patients, 5 months up to 7 years after closed injury of the brachial plexus, were stimulated in the wrist, elbow and axilla of the extremity affected in order to invistigate average somatosensory cerebral evoked potentials (SCEP). Avulsion of most of the roots C5-Thl from the spinal cord could be objectively proved. All available clinical, contrast X-ray, and electrophysiological methods were used as well as surgical approach in the supraclavicular region or laminectomy. Sensation was objectivized by the galvanic skin reflex. Sensory nerve action potentials (NAP) were registered from the…

On the basis of the results of the previous experiments, the evoked spinal cord potentials may prove useful in evaluating clinical aspects of human spinal cord function. The purpose of this paper is to interpret and compare wave form characteristics which were recorded from electrodes placed on the cervical lamina of patients with cervical cord lesion. The investigation were performed on 53 subjects including 7 normal volunteers. The evoked spinal cord potentials to median or ulnar nerve stimulation were recorded from electrodes placed on the cervical lamina. Routinely, 100 responses were summ

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are electrophysiologic responses to pattern or flash stimuli, recorded over the occiput. VEPs can provide information regarding the function of the visual system and are valuable in the diagnosis and investigation of optic nerve disease or post-retinal visual pathway dysfunction. The ISCEV VEP Standard specifies stimulus and recording conditions for three basic types of recording: (1) Pattern-reversal VEPs elicited by checkerboard stimuli with large 1° (degree) and small 0.25° check widths. (2) Pattern onset/offset VEPs elicited by checkerboard stimuli with larg…

OBJECTIVES: Alterations in auditory evoked potential (AEP) parameters have been associated with sensory memory deficits and may serve as biomarkers for cognitive decline. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of AEPs in the early detection of Alzheimer disease (AD).
DESIGN: The systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed across five electronic databases (EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, and CINAHL) from their
