An accelerated solid-phase enzyme-immunoassay has been developed which permits identification of antigens and antibodies to them within 30-40 min, even directly at the site of specimen collection. The method was tested on the models of foot-and-mouth disease virus, vesicular disease of swine, vesicular exanthema of swine, Aujeszky's disease, leukemia, and coronavirus infection of cattle.

We report on two cases of adverse reactions to topical treatment with monoethyl fumarate. One patient suffering from atopic dermatitis reacted with contact dermatitis; the other, suffering from psoriasis, developed a generalized, partly pustulous exanthema as well as signs of systemic involvement, such as tachycardia and dyspnea. As the causative mechanism we suggest non-immunological contact urticaria syndrome.

Dermatoses of pregnancy are relatively rare. The terminology becomes increasingly confusing, as only few of these skin eruptions are proved entities. Apart from pruritus gravidarum and herpes gestationis (pemphigoid gestationis), the symptoms of dermatoses of pregnancy should be classified according to polymorphic exanthema, which are characterized by urticarial lesions, or according to prurigo gravidarum, predominantly characterized by excoriated papules.

We report on the case of a 66-year-old patient who was hospitalized because of intractable low back pain radiating into the right leg. Leg pain was accompanied by a numbness and muscle weakness which was clearly assigned to the L5 dermatome. Our case report describes a case of an otherwise predominantly childhood disease in a young adult woman with a good socioeconomic background who developed pruritic exanthema on the 2nd day after spontaneous delivery. The aim of the paper is to characterize the disease and to describe the possible risks for mother and child according to the available literature, as well as complications not only in puerperium but also during pregnancy.

Dapsone, a potent antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory compound, is mainly used in the treatment of leprosy and a variety of blistering skin diseases. It may cause a severe adverse drug reaction with multiorgan involvement known as dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome. We report the case of a 21-year-old female patient with dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome. The clinical presentation mimicked a viral exanthema.

A case of enchondromatosis with an unusual course was observed. The enchondromas originated in the patellae, subsequently with rapidly spreading metaepiphyseal growth on the knee joints and distally on the medial side of the right tibia. Cold-sensitive exanthema, pigment spots, drumstick fingers, watch glass nails, dentition disorders. Since radical surgery on the right femur 8 years ago there has been no recurrence.

An epidemic of 44 cases of milker's nodules was recorded in the Tampere Central Hospital catchment area in Finland during the autumn of 1974. Exanthema or erythema multiforme-like secondary eruptions were seen in 10 cases. One female patient is reported in detail because of the simultaneous occurrence of erythema nodosum and erythema multiforme. The virological diagnosis was confirmed by electron microscopy.

Febrile exanthema is a common symptom in returning travelers. In addition to cosmopolitan diseases, etiologies specific to the visited country must be considered. As an accurate diagnosis is important, clinical suspicion should be confirmed by laboratory tests. The case reports of three brothers returning from Indonesia highlight the possibility of misdiagnosis due to the clinical similarity and serological cross reactivity of dengue fever and measles.

A 59-year-old patient suffered from persistent angioedema-like swellings and blood eosinophilia. The disease was preceded by an erythema multiforme-like exanthema and urticarial papules. Persistent eosinophilia with exclusion of its known causes and skin biopsy helped to establish the diagnosis of the benign variant of hypereosinophilic syndrome known as 'episodic angioedema with eosinophilia'. Corticosteroid therapy was successful. The therapeutic alternatives are discussed.

The Mediterranean spotted fever is always present in the south of France. The actual incidence is unknown. The disease appears in summer. The diagnostic is based on the association of fever, "black spot" and exanthema and/or a seroconversion. Indirect immunofluorescence is the most used technique. Some patients have severe complications: neurologic, cardiovascular, renal, thrombopenia. These cases look like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. The treatment is based on tetracycline.

A healthy 6-year-old boy presented with an erythematous macular exanthema, meningeal signs and fever, initially diagnosed with probable bacterial meningitis and treated with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drugs. Enteroviral meningitis was confirmed, but the skin lesions continued to evolve and the patient was ultimately diagnosed with erythema dyschromicum perstans. The boy was followed during three years until the spontaneous resolution of the dermatosis.

We present an infant with acute fever, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia, coming from an endemic region for tick-borne encephalitis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, and hantavirus infection. The primary human herpesvirus 6 infection was diagnosed by seroconversion of specific IgM and IgG and by identification of viral DNA in the acute patient's serum. The patient did not show skin rash suggestive of exanthema subitum during the course of illness.

Viral infections are thought to play a part in some cutaneous drug reactions. Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV6), which is the agent of exanthema subitum (sixth disease), has never been implicated in a drug reaction. We report a patient with severe phenobarbital-induced anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome in whom a fulminant haemophagocytic syndrome was associated with HHV6 infection. We discuss the possible role of HHV6 in this reactive condition.

The influx of immigrants from outside the Western world, has led to a wider spectrum of dermatological diseases seen by doctors in Denmark. We present four case histories, in which the disease was brought to Denmark from the patient's land of origin. Tropical diseases may present as a skin disease as such, or a generalised disease with skin manifestations, the commonest signs being ulcers, papules, exanthema, changes in pigmentation, and itching.

Serological examination of 84 foci of measles infection demonstrated that measles diagnosis was confirmed only in 69% of the foci and in 75.9% of the sick individuals. This pointed to the difficulties in the differential diagnosis of measles and other exanthema diseases, and led to the overstatement of the recorded measles foci and cases, particularly among the vaccinated. Therefore, serological confirmation of clinical measles diagnosis is necessary along with epidemiological morbidity analysis at the period of mass immunoprophylaxis.
