We describe the case of a 9-month old boy with unilateral retinoblastoma and bulftalmo. Primary enucleation was the treatment of choice due to the lack of visual prognosis. The histology of the enucleated eye showed massive choroidal invasion by the tumor and the optic nerve free of neoplastic tissue. Therefore, no adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy was indicated. Three months after the enucleation, the patient returned with massive orbital retinoblastoma with exposure of the conjunctiva. Anophthalmic socket pain is a rare complication of enucleation. The authors present a patient presenting with intractable anophthalmic socket pain due to a posteriorly displaced orbital implant. The patient's pain localized to the V1 and V2 orbitofacial dermatomes, and we suspect compression of the frontal and zygomatic branches of the ophthalmic and maxillary nerves, respectively, as the underlying etiology of the patient's pain. Removal of the implant and placement of a dermis fat graft was effective at alleviating the patient's symptoms.

PURPOSE: To report postoperative results and effectiveness using autogenous sclera as a wrapping material for hydroxyapatite orbital implant.
METHODS: A chart review of 78 patients (78 eyes) undergoing primary enucleation or a secondary procedure using autogenous sclera as a wrapping material from March 1997 to October 2004 was undertaken. Primary enucleation was performed in 54 eyes and secondary implantation in 24. In severely constricted eyes or eviscerated eyes with small implants, the sclera was unfolded and used for wrapping only on the anterior surface of the implant.

Blunt trauma to the globe may cause rupture or avulsion of the globe with its attendant consequences. Traumatic avulsion of the globe and optic nerve are rare because of the protection offered by the bony socket and the resistance of the globe due to its pressure and the thickness of the nerve tissues. However, there are a few documented cases of avulsion of the globe and optic nerve in the literature. We report a case of traumatic avulsion of the left globe in a 38-year-old female Nigerian. Primary enucleation of the avulsed globe with insertion of orbital prosthesis was done.

A Holstein calf was born with a large protruding right eye and a central corneal opacity. Enucleation was the first choice of treatment. The calf had a good prognosis and was raised for milking purposes. Macroscopically, the enucleated eye was characterized by the protruded cornea, adherence of the iris to the central posterior cornea and aphakia.
