Beyond poverty, tungiasis is associated with family characteristics and parenting behavior: a case control study in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans. Female fleas burrow into the skin, typically of the feet, producing inflammation, pain, and itching. Although poverty is a major risk factor, not all households or children in the lowest economic bracket are affected, and boys appear disproportionately infected. This study investigated environmental and behavioral characteristics of households and children to explain these variations. METHODS: A total of 3,871 pupils (equal numbers of boys and girls) aged 8-14 years from 44 primary schools in K

BRCA mutation characteristics in a series of index cases of breast cancer selected independent of family history.

Certain genetic predisposition factors, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations play a pivotal role in familial breast cancer development in both males and females. Due to this, the importance and necessity of genetic screening to identify mutations affecting the population is paramount. Undergoing genetic screenings allows for a more knowledgeable risk assessment for the patients and their care providers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of BRCA1/BRCA2 mutated genes in the Turkish population among unselected patients. To identify the molecular markers, we utilized a gene panel a

Cognitive subtypes in non-affected siblings of schizophrenia patients: characteristics and profile congruency with affected family members.

BACKGROUND: Although cognitive subtypes have been suggested in schizophrenia patients, similar analyses have not been carried out in their non-affected siblings. Subtype classification may provide more insight into genetically driven variation in cognitive function. We investigated cognitive subtypes in siblings. METHOD: Cluster analyses were performed in 654 non-affected siblings, on a cognitive battery that included tests of attention, intellectual function and episodic memory. Resulting subtypes in the siblings were analyzed for cognitive, demographic and clinical characteristics and compa

Association between family history and clinicopathologic characteristics in 1987 breast cancer patients: single institution experience from Turkey.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinicopathologic characteristics and survival of patients with family history of breast/ ovarian cancer (FHBOC). METHODS: In this study with 1987 breast cancer patients, we analyzed their tumor characteristics and outcomes, as well as the total number, degree and age of affected relatives, and their type of cancer. Results were assessed using Pearson chi-square test, Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: 24.1% (n=479) of the patients had FHBOC. Patients with FHBOC were younger (47.7 vs. 49.1 years; p=0.03) and tended to have node-negative breast

Four new cases of double heterozygosity for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations: clinical, pathological, and family characteristics.

Double heterozygosity (DH) for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations is a very rare finding, particularly in non-Ashkenazi individuals, and only a few cases have been reported to date. In addition, little is known on the pathological features of the tumors that occur in DH cases and on their family history of cancer. Four carriers of pathogenic mutations in both BRCA1 and BRCA2 were identified among women who underwent genetic counseling for hereditary susceptibility to breast and ovarian carcinoma at three different Italian institutions. Clinical, pathological, and family history data were collected from

Molecular Characteristics of the Fatty-Acid-Binding Protein (FABP) Family in Spirometra mansoni-A Neglected Medical Tapeworm.

The plerocercoid larva of the tapeworm Spirometra mansoni can parasitize humans and animals, causing serious parasitic zoonosis. The molecular characteristics and adaptive parasitism mechanism of Spirometra tapeworms are still unknown. In this study, 11 new members of the fatty-acid-binding protein (FABP) family were characterized in S. mansoni. A clustering analysis showed 11 SmFABPs arranged into two groups, and motif patterns within each group had similar organizations. RT-qPCR showed that SmFABPs were highly expressed in the adult stage, especially in gravid proglottid. A high genetic dive

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of three family clusters of COVID-19 transmitted by latent patients in China.

From 21 January 2020 to 9 February 2020, three family clusters involving 31 patients with coronavirus disease 2019 were identified in Wenzhou, China. The epidemiological and clinical characteristics of the family cluster patients were analysed and compared with those of 43 contemporaneous sporadic cases. The three index cases transmitted the infection to 28 family members 2-10 days before illness onset. Overall, 28 of the 41 sporadic cases and three of 31 patients in the family clusters came back from Wuhan (65.12 vs. 9.68%, P< 0.001). In terms of epidemiological characters and clinical sympto

Tumor characteristics and family history in relation to mammographic density and breast cancer: The French E3N cohort.

BACKGROUND: Mammographic density is a known heritable risk factor for breast cancer, but reports how tumor characteristics and family history may modify this association are inconsistent. METHODS: Dense and total breast areas were assessed using Cumulus™ from pre-diagnostic mammograms for 820 invasive breast cancer cases and 820 matched controls nested within the French E3N cohort study. To allow comparisons across models, percent mammographic density (PMD) was standardized to the distribution of the controls. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of breast cancer risk for mammog

Re-referral to child protective services: the influence of child, family, and case characteristics on risk status.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines child, family, and case characteristics that impact rates of re-referral to Child Protective Services (CPS) using data on all closed CPS investigations for the state of Rhode Island between 2001 and 2004. METHOD: A longitudinal dataset of all referrals to CPS was created using state submissions to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS). After excluding children whose initial CPS investigation resulted in removal from the home, a Cox proportional hazards model was tested to examine factors impacting the likelihood of re-referral. RESULTS: C

Pediatric compliance and the roles of distinct treatment characteristics, treatment attitudes, and family stress: a preliminary report.

Much research and clinical practice derives from the assumption that there is a set of psychological-social variables that commonly influence medical (non)compliance. This assumption may lead to overly general strategies for managing specific illnesses in children with chronic illness. With this concern in mind, a study was made of health provider ratings of compliance, treatment attitudes, and illness-related family stress for three pediatric cohorts (N = 75, ages 8 to 20 years): boys with hemophilia (n = 31), sickle cell disease (n = 22), or asthma (n = 22). Between-group differences were fo

Chromosome 14 familial Alzheimer's disease: the clinical and neuropathological characteristics of a family with a leucine-->serine (L250S) substitution at codon 250 of the presenilin 1 gene.

BACKGROUND: Seven affected members are described from a kindred with autosomal dominant familial Alzheimer's disease associated with a novel mutation in the presenilin 1 (PS1) gene on chromosome 14 that results in a leucine to serine substitution at codon 250 (L250S). METHOD: Clinical information on the pedigree was collected directly from family members including affected members and their carers and also from hospital records. RESULTS: Detailed clinical information was available on five members. All had an early age at onset with a median age of 52 (95% confidence interval (95% CI) 49.4-54

Strong Family-Level Clustering of Adolescent Weight Status Despite Limited Associations with Individual Parental Anthropometric and Metabolic Characteristics.

Objectives: Familial aggregation of obesity has been consistently reported; however, previous studies have predominantly relied on body mass index (BMI)-based associations and have dedicated insufficient time to examining the contribution of measurable parental biological traits to family-level clustering. We investigated associations between parental anthropometric and metabolic characteristics and adolescent weight status in families in which at least one parent had obesity, while exploring family-level clustering patterns. Methods: This cross-sectional family-based study included 34 familie
