Developing a conceptual framework to identify and classify sources of parental stress following pediatric concussion.

OBJECTIVES: To create a conceptual framework that classifies the various stresses parents experience following their child's concussion. METHODS: Twelve parents of children with concussion completed a semi-structured interview with the lead author. Questions broadly focused on post-concussion stress, with specific probes for caregiving responsibilities, concussion knowledge, and athletic participation. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Ten mothers and 2 fathers participated. Five themes stemmed from our analysis: 1) Concussion Knowledge (central theme): stressors related t

Stress and Quality of Life of Parents of Children With POLR3-Related Leukodystrophy: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study.

Background: RNA polymerase III (POLR3)-related leukodystrophy is a rare, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by hypomyelination, hypodontia, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Despite the challenges of caring for a child with POLR3-related leukodystrophy, few studies have examined parents' disease burden. We sought to investigate quality of life and stress levels amongst parents of children with POLR3-related leukodystrophy. Methods: 43 parents of 32 children completed questionnaires on demographics, stress, quality of life, coping mechanisms, and experience of injustice. Detailed clinica

Dads: Progress in understanding the neuroendocrine basis of human fathering behavior.

We outline the progress on the hormonal basis of human paternal behavior during the past twenty years. Advances in understanding the roles of testosterone, prolactin, oxytocin and vasopressin in fathering behavior are described, along with recent research on hormonal interactions, such as those between testosterone and cortisol, and testosterone and the peptide hormones. In addition, we briefly describe the recent leaps forward in elucidating the neurobiological and neuroendocrine basis of fatherhood, made possible by fMRI technology. Emerging from this literature is a developing and complicat

Impact of kangaroo care after caesarean section on paternal-infant attachment and involvement at 12 months: A longitudinal study in Turkey.

The mother's first meeting with the baby after the caesarean section is usually delayed due to the reasons arising from the mother and the baby in Turkey. Although there are many benefits of kangaroo care (KC) intervention between the mother and the newborn, there is a limited number of studies on the KC intervention between the newborn and the father after caesarean section in international literature, and there are none in Turkey. This study was carried out to determine the effect of fathers and infants who participated in KC, immediately after birth by caesarean section, on paternal-infant

Early maternal relational traumatic experiences and psychopathological symptoms: a longitudinal study on mother-infant and father-infant interactions.

Early maternal relational traumas and psychopathological risk can have an impact on mother-infant interactions. Research has suggested the study of fathers and of their psychological profiles as protection or risk factors. The aim of the paper is to assess the quality of parental interactions during feeding in families with mothers with early traumatic experiences. One hundred thirty-six (N = 136) families were recruited in gynecological clinics: Group A included families with mothers who experienced early sexual/physical abuse; Group B was composed of families with mothers who experienced ear

From defeat to non-suicidal self-injury: the roles of entrapment and interpersonal relationship patterns in adolescence.

INTRODUCTION: Based on the integrated motivational-volitional model and the functional theory of self-injury, this study examined the association between defeat and adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), with entrapment as a mediator and interpersonal relationship patterns as moderators. METHODS: Participants were 4,515 secondary school students (Mage = 15.24 years, SD = 1.66). Latent profile analysis was used to identify interpersonal relationship patterns across father-child, mother-child, peer, and teacher-student relationships. A moderated mediation model was then tested to examine t

Current research status on the psychological situation of parents of children with congenital heart disease.

Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are a leading cause of morbidity in children with a high impact on the psychological health of parents. Possible short-term and long-term psychological problems among parents are addressed in the current paper. The diagnosis of CHD paired with subsequent surgical and interventional treatment and prolonged hospital stays cause acute psychological distress and can lead to posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD). As the disease course progresses, the impact on parents' health tends to decrease, but the risk of developing long-term psychological issues remains high. S

ADAMTSL4-related ectopia lentis: A case of pseudodominance with an asymptomatic parent.

Pathogenic variants of ADAMTSL4 are associated with autosomal recessive ectopia lentis et pupillae and isolated ectopia lentis, often presenting congenitally or in childhood. We describe a pedigree of a 4-year-old female child with bilateral ectopia lentis and her asymptomatic 35-year-old father with mild anterior segment findings. Molecular evaluation revealed compound heterozygosity for ADAMTSL4 pathogenic variants in the proband and homozygosity for an ADAMTSL4 pathogenic founder mutation in her father. The results of genetic testing revealed a pseudodominant inheritance pattern in the fami

Mothers' experiences of feeding babies born with cleft lip and palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) in newborns have implications for feeding. It might impede the child's attempts to seal around the nipple and to create intraoral pressure. Parents needed support and information about feeding after birth. Mothers' own experiences and how they coped with the challenges related to feeding have not been extensively studied. The aims of this study were twofold: to describe the experiences of feeding for mothers of children born with CLP and to elucidate how the mothers cope with the challenges related to feeding. A qualitative descriptive method and phenomenographic ana

Mental health of mothers and fathers of twins conceived via assisted reproduction treatment: a 1-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Although twin deliveries after assisted reproduction treatment (ART) are common, the mental health of the parents has scarcely been addressed. Therefore, we evaluated the psychological well-being of ART and spontaneously conceiving parents of twins and singletons. Furthermore, the impact of parity and children's health-related factors on mental health was evaluated. METHODS: We conducted a prospective longitudinal questionnaire study among ART parents of 91 pairs of twins and of 367 singletons and on control parents of 20 pairs of twins and of 379 singletons in the 2nd trimester o

Parental abusive versus supportive behaviors and their relation to hostility and aggression in young adults.

The relation of parental support to abuse has rarely been considered in research on the sequelae of childhood abuse in adulthood. In this study, using the Exposure to Abusive and Supportive Environments Parenting Inventory (EASE-PI), young adults who reported higher emotionally abusive parenting (EA) consistently reported significantly lower love and support from both parents. The relation between physically abusive parenting (PA) and love/support depended upon gender of parent and child. EA was significantly related to higher hostility and higher aggression, as measured by the Buss-Durkee Hos

Fathers make a difference: positive relationships with mother and baby in relation to infant colic.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological factors like depression, anxiety and stress have been associated with infant fussiness or colic. However, little research exists on whether positive factors such as social support and the happiness of the mother-partner relationship are associated with lower rates of infant fussiness or colic. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between infant colic and three types of maternal support: general maternal social support (during pregnancy and post partum), the happiness of the mother-partner relationship (during pregnancy and post partum) and partner inv
