Correlation of atherogenetic biomarkers and estradiol changes in postmenopause.

In postmenopausal women there is age-related sudden decrease in estrogen level. Consequently, at this age in women there are frequent metabolic abnormalities, life quality deterioration, and sudden increase of cardiovascular diseases, high morbidity risk, which together with these risk-factors are related to changes of hormonal status. Research goal was to determine age-dependent changes of diagnostically significant parameters (lipid, fibrinogen, C reactive protein, estradiol content, activity of antioxidant enzymes) in the blood of patients in atherosclerosis-induced cardiovascular disease.

Acquired factor V and factor X Deficiency coexisting with acquired dysfibrinogenaemia in a patient with light chain myeloma.

An elderly woman with light chain myeloma presented with prolonged epistaxis and extensive cutaneous haematomas: her kappa/lambda ratio was high at 395, her coagulation screen, thrombin and reptilase times were abnormal, her FV and FX were in the low range in the absence of specific inhibitors, her Clauss fibrinogen was low at 0.95 g/l but antigenic FNG was 1.58 g/l. The patient denied treatment and died of progressive renal failure. We wish to describe the unusual association of FX and FV deficiency co-existing with an acquired dysfibrinogenaemia.

Effect of degree of blood pressure on the hypercoagulable state in chronic atrial fibrillation.

To investigate the hypothesis that higher levels of blood pressure would further promote the hypercoagulable state in atrial fibrillation (AF) by increasing the degree of hemostatic abnormalities, we studied 82 consecutive patients with chronic nonvalvular AF who were not taking antithrombotic therapy. Patients with AF had higher levels of plasma fibrin D-dimer, von Willebrand factor, and fibrinogen than controls in sinus rhythm, and no differences between tertiles of either systolic, diastolic, or mean blood pressure were found, suggesting other mechanisms may be contributing to the hypercoag

The looming storm: Blood and cytokines in COVID-19.

A novel coronavirus termed as COVID-19 by WHO has been the causative agent of an unprecedented pandemic in the history of humanity. The global burden of mortality and morbidity associated with this pandemic continues to increase with each passing day as it is progressively leading to multiorgan dysfunction. In most cases, the cause of death has been attributed to respiratory failure, sepsis, cardiac failure, kidney injury, or coagulopathy. As more knowledge is being unfolded, an in-depth understanding of various systemic manifestations and complications of SARS-CoV2 is vital for optimum manage

The role of fibrin matrices and tissue factor in early-term trophoblast proliferation and spreading.

INTRODUCTION: Fibrin deposition in placenta is a common phenomenon which can be triggered by villous injury and coagulation activation. Fibrin abnormalities (hypo/dysfibrinogenemia) and factor XIII deficiency are associated with infertility and pregnancy loss. While trophoblasts are known to grow on fibrin matrices, the role of this protein in trophoblast repair processes remains unclear. We hypothesize that fibrin may have an essential role in trophoblast remodeling. METHODS: Morphology and spreading of primary early-term human trophoblasts and villi explants were investigated on various fib

Association of tumor size and internal echo pattern with coagulopathy associated with hepatic hemangioma.

Little is known concerning causal factors associated with the size and echogenicity of hepatic hemangiomas. The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between tumor size and echo pattern and coagulation factors, and to elucidate the growth pattern of hemangiomas. In 214 consecutive patients with hepatic hemangiomas, ultrasonography was performed to determine total tumor number, size, echogenicity and location, and serum laboratory tests for liver function and coagulation factors were carried out. The ultrasonographic appearance of hemangiomas was homogeneous in 75.7% of c

Blood brain barrier leakage is not a consistent feature of white matter lesions in CADASIL.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a genetic paradigm of small vessel disease (SVD) caused by NOTCH3 mutations that stereotypically lead to the vascular accumulation of NOTCH3 around smooth muscle cells and pericytes. White matter (WM) lesions (WMLs) are the earliest and most frequent abnormalities, and can be associated with lacunar infarcts and enlarged perivascular spaces (ePVS). The prevailing view is that blood brain barrier (BBB) leakage, possibly mediated by pericyte deficiency, plays a pivotal role in the formation of

Activated Hemostatic Biomarkers in Patients with Implanted Left Ventricle Assist Devices: Are Heparin and/or Clopidogrel Justified?

BACKGROUND: Adequate anticoagulation represents a major problem for left ventricle assist device (LVAD) utilization in patients awaiting heart transplantation as well as for regeneration of the native heart. The proper management of hemostatic abnormalities during LVAD support may improve survival by reducing the incidence of hemorrhagic and/or thromboembolic complications. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man with implanted pulsatile LVAD due to dilated cardiomyopathy received aspirin and warfarin. The patient underwent serial weekly monitoring of hemostatic biomarkers including international norm

Early coagulopathy in trauma patients: an on-scene and hospital admission study.

PURPOSE: Amongst trauma patients, early coagulopathy is common on hospital admission. No studies have evaluated the initial coagulation status in the pre-hospital setting. We hypothesise that the coagulopathic process begins at the time of trauma. We studied the on-scene and on hospital arrival coagulation profile of trauma patients. METHODS: Prospective, observational study investigating the on-scene coagulation profile and its time course. We studied 45 patients at the scene of the accident, before fluid administration, and on hospital admission and classified their coagulopathy using the I

Cryoglobulins, Cryofibrinogens, and Cold Agglutinins in Cold Urticaria: Literature Review, Retrospective Patient Analysis, and Observational Study in 49 Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Cryoproteins, such as cryoglobulins, cryofibrinogens and cold agglutinins, precipitate at low temperatures or agglutinate erythrocytes and dissolve again when warmed. Their pathogenetic and diagnostic importance in cold urticaria (ColdU) is unclear. In this study, we aimed to characterize the prevalence of cryoproteins in patients with ColdU. METHODS: We conducted 3 analyses: i) a systematic review and meta-analysis of published data using an adapted version of the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool for case series, ii) a retrospective analysis of 293 ColdU patien

[Pre-operative care for cardiac surgery patients with cold antibody disorder, cryoglobulinaemia and cryofibrinogenemia].

We present an example of a patient with confirmed cold agglutinin disease who underwent cardiac surgery in hypothermia to illustrate a known fact that, when exposed to cold, cold agglutinins induce haemolysis of erythrocytes and that cryoglobulins and cryofibrinogens may, upon exposition to cold during a surgery under hypothermia, precipitate or gelify and thus increase plasma viscosity and damage microcirculation. Detailed immunological and haematological investigations in all patients awaiting cardiac surgery with a risk of developing hypothermia is not advantageous considering the low numbe

Characteristics of Products of Fibrinogen Origin in the Presence of Anti- SARS-CoV-2 IgG in the Bloodstream.

BACKGROUND: The hemostasis system has been extensively investigated in patients in the acute phase of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In contrast, the post-COVID syndrome is a poorly known entity, and there is a lack of information on the mechanisms underlying the hemostasis abnormalities in the post-COVID period. AIM: To analyze the potential changes in the parameters of the hemostasis system in the post- COVID period in the plasma of donors with different titers of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG. METHODS: The plasma from 160 donors who had recovered from COVID infection was used in the study. Ba

Clot waveform of APTT has abnormal patterns in subjects with COVID-19.

In Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) subjects, recent evidence suggests the presence of unique coagulation abnormalities. In this study, we performed clot waveform analyses to investigate whether specific modulations are observed in COVID-19 subjects. We analyzed the second derivative of the absorbance in routine APTT tests performed using an ACL-TOP system. We observed high frequencies of abnormal patterns in APTT second-derivative curves that could be classified into an early shoulder type, a late shoulder type, or a biphasic type, high maximum first-derivative and second-derivative peak l

Evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of ChatGPT-5 in the interpretation of ROTEM data.

BACKGROUND: Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) is widely used for goal-directed hemostatic management in cardiac and liver surgery. However, its interpretation requires algorithm-based expertise and remains subject to inter-observer variability. Large language models (LLMs) may assist clinicians in structured interpretation of viscoelastic data. METHODS: In this multicenter, retrospective validation study, 93 structured ROTEM-based clinical vignettes derived from 72 adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery or liver transplantation were evaluated. Two experienced anesthesiologists independ

Association of Fibrinogen Variants with Severity of Obesity and Metabolic Liver Disease: 2-Year Follow-up after Bariatric Surgery.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the hepatic manifestation of obesity. Studies in mice link fibrinogen variation to obesity and MASLD, but how naturally occurring fibrinogen variants associate with obesity and MASLD in humans is unknown. To investigate associations of fibrinogen variants (fibrinogen γ', fibrinogen αE, and sialylated fibrinogen) with obesity, MASLD, and fibrosis severity and examine changes in variants 2 years after bariatric surgery. We included 195 individuals with a body mass index (BMI) > 35 kg/m2. [Neonatal hypoxia and hemocoagulative changes].

Coagulation abnormalities with and without haemorrhagic manifestations have been frequently reported in newborn-infants affected by hypoxia. Particularly in postmature-infants and in those ones with acute asphyxia at birth, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR) and cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD). A reduction of synthesis or a consumption of blood coagulation factors are the main causes of these abnormalities. The anomalies of platelet number and of their function, of haemostasis global tests, of coagulation factors and physiologic inhibitors lev
