Simultaneous scanning of two mice in a small-animal PET scanner: a simulation-based assessment of the signal degradation.

In PET imaging, research groups have recently proposed different experimental set ups allowing multiple animals to be simultaneously imaged in a scanner in order to reduce the costs and increase the throughput. In those studies, the technical feasibility was demonstrated and the signal degradation caused by additional mice in the FOV characterized, however, the impact of the signal degradation on the outcome of a PET study has not yet been studied. Here we thoroughly investigated, using Monte Carlo simulated [18F]FDG and [11C]Raclopride PET studies, different experimental designs for whole-bod

PET/CT: First-Line Examination to Assess Disease Extent of Disseminated Coccidioidomycosis.

Coccidioidomycosis is an infection caused by inhalation of the Coccidioides fungus. Most infections remain subclinical or are confined to the pulmonary system. Disseminated disease is rare. Traditionally, a combination of imaging modalities has been used to determine disease extent. We suggest (18)F-FDG PET/CT as a single first-line imaging examination to assess disease extent. We present a case of disseminated coccidioidomycosis to the lung, mediastinum, soft tissues, and skeletal system. To our knowledge, no prior case reports demonstrate such widespread disease using PET/CT.

Evaluation of physiological FDG uptake in the skeleton in adults: is it uniformly distributed?

AIM: The aim of this study was to study whether FDG was uniformly distributed throughout the skeleton and whether age and gender affected this biodistribution. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 158 patients were included in this retrospective study. None of the patients had received prior treatment that had affected the bone marrow and patients with bone metastases, trauma, benign and/or malignant hematologic disorders were excluded from the study. The SUVmax from the 24 different locations in the skeleton was obtained and all the values were compared with each other. RESULTS: FDG uptake in t

Combined (11)C-methionine and 18F-FDG PET imaging in a case of cerebral sparganosis.

A 35-year-old man presented with right lower extremity numbness and weakness. CT demonstrated an irregular left parietal hypoattenuation with a punctuate calcification. MRI revealed a T1 low signal and T2 high signal lesion with extensive surrounding edema. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI showed an irregular enhancing lesion. F-FDG and C-methionine PET both demonstrated high uptake in the left parietal lesion. Lesion SUV was 7.5 for F-FDG and 3.0 for C-methionine. Surgical pathology demonstrated cerebral sparganosis.

PET in vasculitis.

[(18) F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) can be used to visualize large-vessel inflammation in giant-cell arteritis, Takayasu arteritis, and other types of aortitis. In patients with symptoms compatible with polymyalgia rheumatica, findings of increased FDG-uptake in the shoulders, hips, as well as the spinous processes of the cervical and lumbar spine, may suggest this diagnosis. In patients with giant-cell arteritis, there is increased metabolic activity within the aortic wall on FDG PET scintigraphy, indicating inflammation of the aorta, which may be a predictor of

[The use of positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) in diagnosing chronic periaortitis].

Chronic periaortitis involving idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, inflammatory aneurysm of the abdominal aorta and perianeurysmal retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare disease characterised by the development ofan inflammatory fibrotising process surrounding large vessels and organs of the retroperitoneum. According to some authors, chronic periaortitis results from a systemic autoimmune inflammation with vasculitis affecting aortal vasa vasorum and medium and small calibre retroperitoneal vessels. The disease is assumed to have immunopathogenetic background. Chronic periaortitis is diagnosed w

Role of FDG-PET in the clinical management of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome: detection of the underlying malignancy and the brain PET-MRI correlates.

The role of 2-deoxy-2-[F-18]fluoro-D-glucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) imaging in the clinical management of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS) is in evolution. The initial results are promising, and the potential of this modality in this setting has been demonstrated in the literature. In the setting of PNS, FDG-PET imaging can be of value from the following standpoints: (1) detection of the occult malignant focus and (2) objective assessment of the presence and extent of the functional abnormality in the brain and correlation of the imaging findings with the clinical fea

[A case of endobronchial actionomycosis evaluated by FDG-PET].

In April 2005, a 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because an abnormal chest shadow had been noted on a medical examination. Our investigation revealed primary squamous cell lung carcinoma in the right lower lobe (stage IIIA). Right middle and lower lobectomies including resection of the chest wall were performed. 18Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) conducted 18 months later demonstrated nodular lesions with intense FDG activity in the right upper lobe and the presence of a post-resection positive bronchial stump. Fiberoptic bronchoscopic examination revealed

Clinical applications of fluorodeoxyglucose--positron emission tomography in the management of malignant melanoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malignant melanoma is the seventh most common newly diagnosed cancer among Americans. In most cases, melanoma is curable by means of surgical excision if diagnosed in early stages of the disease. The prognosis is linked directly to the initial stage at the time of diagnosis. Early diagnosis and accurate disease staging is important for appropriate treatment planning. This review focuses on clinical applications of positron emission tomography (PET) using F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in the management of patients with malignant melanoma. RECENT FINDINGS: Many investigators hav

Demonstration of recurrent dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord by FDG-PET.

We present a rare case of recurrent dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the spermatic cord which was clearly depicted by FDG-PET imaging. Preceding the FDG study, it was difficult to discriminate whether a mass detected by CT was recurrent tumor or postradiation necrosis. The FDG-PET finding was informative in relation to the extent of a viable tumor. We suggest that FDG-PET seems to be useful in differentiating recurrent tumor from radiation necrosis in patients with liposarcoma after therapy.

Intrathoracic Herniated and Infected Pancreatic Pseudocyst.

A 40-year-old man was admitted with acute diarrhoea, 3 kg weight loss, and mild fever (up to 38 °C). His medical history included acute necrotising pancreatitis and an axial hiatal hernia. Laboratory tests showed elevated inflammation parameters (C-reactive protein of 188 mg/L). A 18 F-FDG-PET/CT scan revealed infected abdominal pancreatic pseudocysts extending to the thoracic region due to the hiatal hernia. Endosonography and transgastric drainage removed 200 mL of pus. Klebsiella pneumoniae was identified, and antibiotic therapy with ampicillin and sulbactam was started. A follow-up ultraso

FDG PET/CT in a Case of Primary Leiomyosarcoma of the Spermatic Cord.

Primary spermatic cord leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignancy. We describe FDG PET/CT findings in a case of primary high-grade leiomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord. It appeared as a soft tissue mass with heterogeneous hyperenhancement on MRI and focal activity with SUV max of 4.8 on FDG PET/CT. This case indicates that spermatic cord leiomyosarcoma, although rare, should be included in the list of differential diagnoses of hypermetabolic spermatic cord lesions.

18F-FDG PET/CT

Radiopharmaceutical imaging of phantoms and patients with MACACO III Compton camera.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The use of Compton cameras for imaging radioisotopes in nuclear medicine offers potential advantages over conventional gamma cameras in some aspects. In this work, we present the first results in this field with the Compton camera prototype MACACO III after a measurement campaign in La Fe Hospital (Valencia, Spain). METHODS: Images of Derenzo-like phantoms filled with 18F-FDG and 131I-NaI have been obtained with MACACO III and, in the latter case, with gamma cameras available in the hospital. Subsequently, a metastatic lesion in a patient treated with 131I-NaI after th

Current and future trends of [18F]FDG PET/CT in pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma.

[18F]FDG PET/CT plays a pivotal role in the contemporary management of malignant lymphoma, and is crucial for accurate staging, response assessment, and treatment planning in pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma (pHL). Treatment response evaluation in pHL and in particular interim [18F]FDG PET/CT done after few cycles of chemotherapy is critical for early prediction of outcome. It helps in identifying patients who would respond well and might safely omit radiotherapy, thereby reducing the risk of late adverse effects. Consequently, consensus international guidelines emphasize the standardized use of [18

External delay and dispersion correction of automatically sampled arterial blood with dual flow rates.

Objective. Arterial sampling for PET imaging often involves continuously measuring the radiotracer activity concentration in blood using an automatic blood sampling system (ABSS). We proposed and validated an external delay and dispersion correction procedure needed when a change in flow rate occurs during data acquisition. We also measured the external dispersion constant of [11C]CURB, [18F]FDG, [18F]FEPPA, and [18F]SynVesT-1.Approach. External delay and dispersion constants were measured for the flow rates of 350, 300, 180, and 150 ml h-1, using 1-minute-long rectangular inputs (n= 10;18F-fl

Comparing Occupational Exposure from 18F-FDG Injection Procedure Using a Traditional Injection Method Versus an Automated Injection System.

We evaluated occupational radiation exposure associated with 18F-FDG injection using a traditional manual approach versus an automated injection system. Methods: Wrist and whole-body radiation exposure of nuclear medicine personnel using a manual injection method versus an automated injection system for 18F-FDG administration were assessed using electronic personal dosimeters. Radiation exposure while configuring both systems was also evaluated. The dose administered met the requirements of the "as low as reasonably achievable" principle. Radiation exposure during initial setup and dose admini
