Coronary atherosclerosis in the pig. Induced plaque injury and platelet response.

The thrombogenic potential of atherosclerotic diet-induced coronary atherosclerotic plaques was investigated in normal swine and in bleeder swine with homozygous von Willebrand disease. Fourteen paired normal and bleeder swine were placed on a 1% cholesterol diet for 1 to 16 weeks. Serum cholesterol was elevated in all animals at sacrifice. Foam cell deposits developed in all major epicardial coronary arteries, and lesions progressed over time from small subendothelial foam cell deposits to fibrous cap lesions that contained foam cells, elastic fibers, collagen, degenerative material, and smoo…

Atherosclerosis Profiling Reveals BHLHE40 as a Candidate Modulator of VSMC.

BACKGROUND: Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a central role in atherosclerosis by undergoing phenotypic modulation from a quiescent … onfirmed by histological analysis. These studies also identified a large population of VSMC-derived foam cells that exhibited activation of gene programs associated with lipid metabolism, proliferation, and tumor-like features. The transcription factor BHLHE40 (basic helix-loop-helix family member e40) emerged as a candidate regulator of this phenotypic tran …

Transcriptional repression of atherogenic inflammation: modulation by PPARdelta.

The formation of an atherosclerotic lesion is mediated by lipid-laden macrophages (foam cells), which also establish chronic inflammation associated with lesion progression. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma promotes lipid uptake and efflux in these atherogenic cells. In contrast, we found that the closely related receptor PPARdelta controls the inflammatory status of the macrophage. Deletion of PPARdelta from foam cells increased the availability of inflammatory suppressors, which in turn reduced atherosclerotic lesion area by more than 50%. We propose an unconventio…

Inhibitory effects of HepG2 cell-derived apolipoprotein A-I-containing lipoproteins on cholesteryl ester accumulation in macrophages.

We investigated the mechanisms of inhibitory effects on foam cell formation of apolipoprotein A-I-containing lipoproteins secreted by HepG2 cells (HepG2-HDL) using mouse peritoneal macrophages. When macrophages were incubated with acetylated low-density lipoprotein (acetyl-LDL) in the presence of HepG2-HDL, cholesterol ester (CE) accumulation in cells was reduced by 63%. This inhibitory capacity was almost similar to that of plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL). When macrophages were converted to foam cells with acetyl-LDL and then reacted with HepG2-HDL or plasma HDL, the HDL-induced CE redu…

Foam bezoar: resection of perforated terminal ileum in a 17-year-old with sickle β+ thalassemia and pica.

Children and adolescents with sickle cell disease demonstrate an increased incidence of pica. Pica involving polyurethane foam has been previously reported, but effective management of such cases remains unclear. We present the case of a 17-year-old African American adolescent girl with sickle β+ thalassemia who presented with a long history of foam rubber pica resulting in intestinal obstruction. Conservative management was unsuccessful, and the patient ultimately required operative intervention. We advocate for a low threshold for early operation in cases of foam rubber bezoar.

Green and eco-friendly poly(lactic acid) / poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) foams fabricated via supercritical CO2 foaming for efficient oil-contaminated wastewater treatment.

This work presents a fully bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) porous material using supercritical CO2 foaming technology to address oil spill and energy challenges. Incorporating PBSA with varying BA (butylene adipic) segment ratios reduces glass transition temperature of PLA from 67 °C to 55 °C, while cold crystallization temperature of PLA shifts from 122 °C to 103 °C. Additionally, tensile modulus and complex viscosity decrease, owing to flexible chain segments of PBSA. Under optimal PBSA segment ratio (butylene succinate (BS):butylene adipate (BA)

Contact Pressure Under Traditional Foam and Novel Thermoplastic Elastomer Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Interfaces.

Negative pressure wound therapy relies on suction, commonly set to -125 mmHg, to evacuate wound fluid, but dysvascular and pressure injuries often respond unpredictably. Newton's third law indicates that negative pressure applies an equal and opposite contact pressure on the wound surface, and this study quantified this contact pressure across dressing types, wound configurations and suction levels. Using a porcine explant model, central and peripheral contact pressure measurements were obtained beneath black reticulated open cell foam, white foam and a novel thermoplastic elastomer dressing a

Preparation, Reaction Kinetics, and Properties of Polyester Foams Using Water Produced by the Reaction as a Foaming Agent.

This study explores sustainable foamed polyester materials derived from natural or bio-based building blocks, including succinic, glutaric, and adipic acids, combined with trimethylolpropane and pentaerythritol. By precisely tuning the ratio of functional groups, the resulting polymers contain minimal free functionalities, leading to lower hygroscopicity and enhanced stability. The reaction is monitored by tracking the mass loss associated with water formation, the primary condensation by-product, which reveals a first-order kinetic behaviour. Infrared spectroscopy indicates that foaming occur

Targeted suppression of CCR7/NF-κB signaling by apoptotic body-inspired colchicine nanovesicles halts atherosclerotic progression.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by foam cell formation and persistent inflammation as central pathological drivers. Although colchicine (Col) exhibits potent anti-inflammatory activities, its clinical application is limited by a narrow therapeutic window. In the present study, we developed phosphatidylserine-exposing nanovesicles (Col@PSVs) that leverage the innate phagocytic capacity of macrophage-derived foam cells by presenting surface "eat-me" signals, thereby enabling targeted immune modulation. The synergistic collaboration between Col and PSVs allow…

Exosomes and Atherogenesis.

Myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke are the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Atherosclerosis is their common pathological foundation. It is known that atherosclerosis is characterized by endothelial activation/injury, accumulation of inflammatory immune cells and lipid-rich foam cells, followed by the development of atherosclerotic plaque. Either from arterial vessel wall or blood circulation, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, macrophages, T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, foam cells, and platelets have been considered to contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Exosome…

Polypropylene Modified with Polyethylene Through Reactive Melt Blending: Fabrication and Characterizations.

Conventional PP with a linear chain structure is not suitable for foam processing due to its poor rheological properties. In this study, PP was modified with PE through reactive melt blending of maleic anhydride-grafted PP (MA-PP) with a small amount of PE bearing glycidyl groups on its backbone (G-PE), with the aim of enhancing the melt rheological properties of PP to make it suitable for foam processing. An anhydride-epoxy reaction occurred between MA-PP and G-PE during the melt processing, resulting in the formation of a crosslinked polymer network, which was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy,

Analysis of biomechanical load cases for the investigation of pedicle screws ASTM F1717 vs. Toggling.

BACKGROUND: The anchorage of pedicle screws is essential for spinal stability during surgical procedures. Static pullout tests differ substantially from the dynamic loading conditions that occur in vivo. This study aimed to compare two dynamic load cases (ASTM F1717 and Toggling) to assess the implementation of the test results to clinical failure cases as well as their implications for standardization. METHODS: The two loading cases were investigated under standardized conditions using a 6DoF sensor and two types of polyurethane foams. Both test configurations were examined on an adaptable t

Dual-Stage Supercritical CO2 Foaming for Sequential Structural Conversion in High-Performance Reentrant Foam with Reversible Thermal-Induced Transformation.

The controllable design and optimization of porous structures can endow the foam with unique functionalities and expand its application domains. In this work, we propose a dual-stage supercritical carbon dioxide foaming technology that leverages the synergistic effects of the pressure difference inside and outside the cells and the surface tension between the polymer matrix and gas, enabling direct conversion from engineering plastic polymer with a rigid molecular chain to the closed-cell reentrant foam. Using polycarbonate siloxane copolymer (Si-PC) resin as a matrix, we successfully prepared

Fabricating a Cu-MBG-incorporated polyurethane foam with antibacterial properties and bioactivity for diabetic wound healing.

Chronic diabetic wounds require dressings that combine high liquid absorption, antibacterial activity, and bioactivity to support tissue repair. Here, copper-containing mesoporous bioactive glass (Cu-MBG) was incorporated into polyurethane foam to create a bioactive composite dressing (PU-Cu-MBG). The resulting foam exhibited strong liquid absorption, suitable water vapor transmission, and robust mechanical properties. The Cu-MBG endowed the dressing with antibacterial activity (>99% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and promoted the proliferation of human endothelial cells.

H2O2 accumulation promoting internalization of ox-LDL in early atherosclerosis revealed via a synergistic dual-functional NIR fluorescence probe.

The equilibrium of lipid metabolism is critical to sustaining human health. Metabolic disorders often result in a variety of cardiovascular illnesses, especially atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is characterized by complicated complications and high mortality. Cholesterol deposition and oxidative stress have been considered as critical mechanisms in the occurrence and progression of atherosclerosis, however, the relationship between oxidative stress and lipid accumulation remains a puzzle in foam cells during the early stages of atherosclerosis development. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been re…

Soraphen A enhances macrophage cholesterol efflux via indirect LXR activation and ABCA1 upregulation.

Increased cholesterol efflux from macrophage foam cells in the subendothelial space confers protection against atherosclerosis. Soraphen A, a myxobacterial macrolactone, is an inhibitor of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylases (ACC), which control fatty acid synthesis and oxidation. To assess a potential direct link between macrophage cholesterol efflux and ACC inhibition, we examined [3H]-cholesterol efflux from human THP-1-derived foam cells in the presence of soraphen A. We dissected underlying molecular events by western blot analyses, RT-qPCR, reporter gene and coactivator recruitment assays as …
