Observations of vitamin A toxicity in three patients with renal failure receiving parenteral alimentation.

Elevated serum retinol concentrations have been previously reported in patients with renal failure, although overt clinical toxicity has been described only rarely. We present three patients with renal failure receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) who developed biochemical and clinical findings of hypervitaminosis A. Improvement followed deletion of vitamin A from the TPN. These cases demonstrate that patients with renal failure may be at risk for symptomatic vitamin A toxicity if given TPN with standard retinol supplementation. Such patients should be carefully observed clinically and bi

Oral absorption kinetics of levetiracetam: the effect of mixing with food or enteral nutrition formulas.

BACKGROUND: Levetiracetam (LEV) is an antiepileptic drug with a favorable pharmacokinetic profile, including negligible protein binding and linear elimination kinetics. Because LEV is likely to be used in populations that include children and the elderly, alternative techniques of administration, such as crushing the tablet and mixing its contents with semisolid food or enteral nutrition formulas (ENFs), may be required in some clinical settings. Although previous studies have suggested that administration with food does not affect the overall absorption of LEV, there is a lack of data regardi

A suggested classification of bite marks in foodstuffs in forensic dental analysis.

Bite marks have been reported in flesh, foodstuffs and inanimate objects. Those in foodstuffs occur widely in cases of larceny but also occur in serious crimes such as murder. Evaluation of distinctive characteristics in food bites differs from the corresponding assessment of flesh bite marks in that the assessment is made on the impression made by the labial aspect of the teeth and not on the biting edge, because the teeth penetrate the bitten foods to different depths. The terminology used to describe food bite marks is very varied and a classification of food bites has been formulated in an

Diagnostic approaches to the patient with suspected food allergies.

Adverse food reactions may be secondary to food allergy (hypersensitivity) or food intolerance. The clinical manifestations of food allergies depend on the target organ affected. Gastrointestinal, respiratory, and cutaneous symptoms are the most common of the clinical responses. The medical history, physical examination, and various in vivo or in vitro tests are useful in the diagnostic evaluation. Double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges are the standard for diagnosis of food allergies. Presumptive diagnosis of food allergy based on patient history and on results of skin test or radio

Effects of liquid versus solid diet on colonic transit in humans. Evaluation by standard colonic transit scintigraphy.

The effects of liquid versus solid diet on human colonic transit were investigated, and transit following cecal instillation of tracer was compared with transit following instillation in the proximal jejunum. In a randomized cross-over, single-blind fashion, 6 normal volunteers ingesting either normal solid foods or a liquid diet were studied using colonic transit scintigraphy. 111In-DTPA was instilled either into the cecum via a long intestinal tube or into the proximal jejunum via a feeding tube. Compared with the liquid diet, the solid diet slowed transit in the cecum and ascending colon (p

[Use of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in non-dairy formulas. II. Nitrogen balance in children with lactose intolerance, fed with a formula based on chickpea and a commercial soybean product].

The nutritive value of chick-pea and soy infant formulas was evaluated. Nitrogen balance was performed in 17 malnourished babies, seven of which were fed with the chick-pea formula, and 10 with the soy commercial formula (Sobee). The percentage of absorption, retention and biological value of the chick-pea formula were 72.4, 26.4 and 35.1, respectively and 69.6, 24.3 and 34.0 in the same order, with the soy formula. Since the nutritional quality of the chick-pea was not different to the commercial soy formula and the diarrhea was better controlled by the former, this formula could be recommend

Complementary Feeding of Sorghum-Based and Corn-Based Fortified Blended Foods Results in Similar Iron, Vitamin A, and Anthropometric Outcomes in the MFFAPP Tanzania Efficacy Study.

BACKGROUND: Fortified blended foods (FBFs) are micronutrient-fortified food aid products containing cereals and pulses. It has been suggested to reformulate FBFs to include whey protein concentrate, use alternative commodities (e.g., sorghum and cowpea), and utilize processing methods such as extrusion to produce them. The Micronutrient Fortified Food Aid Pilot Project (MFFAPP) efficacy study was designed to test the efficacy of complementary feeding of newly formulated FBFs. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of 5 newly formulated FBFs in combating iron deficienc

Food handlers and foodborne diseases: grounds for safety and public and occupational health actions.

One of the causes of foodborne diseases is contamination during food preparation; food handlers carrying pathogens might be involved in the origin of this condition. This problem is more serious in health care facilities, since consumers of contaminated food are already ill. Therefore, operational procedures should be formulated to prevent incidents. We performed a review of scientific studies, legislation and regulations on this subject. The results indicate that the main causes of food contamination involving food handlers to be considered in strategies to reduce, or even eliminate foodborne

Personalized nutrition after discharge for pancreatic surgery: A study protocol.

Background: Pancreatic cancer has an increasing incidence and prevalence trend. Its prognosis is negatively affected by poor/altered nutritional status. Therefore, nutritional interventions play a critical/pivotal role at any stage. Despite being included in the prehabilitation items of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols for pancreatic surgery, nutritional recommendations concerning early post-discharge period are lacking. Aim: To assess the acceptability and feasibility of a personalized and standardized food plan for patients following pancreatic surgery. A secondary aim is to

The effects of a diet formulation with oats, soybeans, and flax on lipid profiles and uricemia in patients with AIDS and dyslipidemia.

INTRODUCTION: Although the initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is accompanied by an attenuation of viral load, metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and lipodystrophy are often observed in patients under this treatment. Certain foods, such as oat bran, soy protein, and flaxseed, have been shown to improve a patient's lipid profile despite possible increases in uricemia. Thus, a bioactive compound was formulated using these foods to help patients with HIV/AIDS control metabolic disorders resulting from HAART. METHODS: An uncontrolled before an

Modelling vitamin D food fortification among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Low vitamin D intake and prevalence of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration <50 nmol/L among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples highlight a need for public health strategies to improve vitamin D status. Since few foods contain naturally occurring vitamin D, food fortification could be a suitable strategy. We aimed to model vitamin D food fortification scenarios among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. METHODS: We used nationally representative food consumption data (n = 4109, aged ≥2 years) and vitamin D food composition data to model four scena

Misdiagnosed food allergy resulting in severe malnutrition in an infant.

As food allergies become increasingly prevalent and testing methods to identify "food allergy" increase in number, the importance of careful diagnosis has become even more critical. Misdiagnosis of food allergy and inappropriate use of unproven testing modalities may lead to a harmful food-elimination diet. This case is an example of an infant who was placed on an overly restrictive elimination diet at the recommendation of her health care providers, resulting in kwashiorkor and acquired acrodermatitis enteropathica.

Bar code scanning of ready-to-feed enteral nutrition formulas improves patient safety and reduces risk of misadministration in pediatric patients ages 1-18: A quality improvement project in a single children's hospital.

The safe use of enteral nutrition (EN) for patients of all ages in the healthcare setting is often taken for granted. However, an increasing body of literature highlights potential failure points even when using ready-to-feed (RTF) enteral formulas. Potential risks include administering a wrong, expired, or recalled formula which could result in patient harm including under or over nutrition, allergic reactions, gastrointestinal intolerance, metabolic or electrolyte disturbances, and/or consequences related to contamination. This quality improvement project reviewed the frequency of having the

The impact of an enteral formula with food-derived ingredients on dietetic practice at a specialist children's hospital in the UK: Retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Blended tube feeds are reported to be better tolerated in some children compared to standard commercial enteral formulas, allowing children to normalise feeding by having similar foods as the rest of the family. However, a blended tube feed is contraindicated in patients who are immunocompromised or require post-pyloric feeding as a result of a food safety risk. Other contraindications for blended diet include children who require continuous pump feeding via gastrostomy or nasogastric feeding tube (< 12 Fr) and fluid restrictions. To meet the demands of consumers, manufacturers hav
