Force overestimation during vascular occlusion is triggered by motor system inhibition.

Low-intensity resistance exercise with vascular occlusion enhances human muscular strength by elevating neural drive to muscles, which is accompanied by the additional activation of fast-twitch fibers because of muscle fatigue. However, few previous studies have investigated the underlying neuromotor mechanisms from a perspective other than muscle fatigue. Notably, participants require more voluntary effort to exert muscular force to lift a weight immediately after vascular occlusion, indicating its acute effect on the force perception system without muscle fatigue. However, the major cause of

Effect of mechanical stresses on viral capsid disruption during droplet formation and drying.

Identification of the mechanisms by which viruses lose activity during droplet formation and drying is of great importance to understanding the spread of infectious diseases by virus-containing respiratory droplets and to developing thermally stable spray dried live or inactivated viral vaccines. In this study, we exposed suspensions of baculovirus, an enveloped virus, to isolated mechanical stresses similar to those experienced during respiratory droplet formation and spray drying: fluid shear forces, osmotic pressure forces, and surface tension forces at interfaces. DNA released from mechani

The roles of whole body balance, shoe-floor friction and joint strength during maximum exertions: searching for the "weakest link".

Exerting manual forces is critical during occupational performance. Therefore, being able to estimate maximum force capacity is particularly useful for determining how these manual exertion demands relate to available capacity. To facilitate this type of prediction requires a complete understanding of how maximum force capacity is governed biomechanically. This research focused on identifying how factors including joint moment strength, balance and shoe-floor friction affected hand force capacity during pulling, pressing downward and pushing medially. To elucidate potential limiting factors, j

Colonic displacement. Proposed treatment for gastric remnant volvulus due to eventration of the diaphragm.

Displacement of the gastric remnant in patients with left diaphragmatic eventration may lead to gastric remnant volvulus requiring surgical correction. This results from the strong negative intrathoracic pulling force created by the potential subphrenic space an paradoxical movement of th diaphragm. Unless this strong negative force is first eliminated, gastropexy alone is likely to result in recurrence. Obliteration of the subphrenic space by colonic displacement is an effective and simple way of abolishing this negative subdiaphragmatic pulling force. Once this is achieved, any form of gastr

Understanding the Role of Surface Charge on Nanobubble Capillary Bridging during Particle-Particle Interaction.

The interactions between particles due to long-range hydrophobic forces have been extensively investigated. The hydrophobic force is likely a capillary force that arises from the formation of capillary bridges due to the merging of nanobubbles. In this study, we aim to investigate the impact of the nanobubble surface charge on the capillary bridge and, subsequently, the interaction between particles. The surface charge of the nanobubbles was altered in the presence of various surfactants (cationic, anionic, and nonionic) and salts (mono-, di-, and trivalent). The particle-particle interaction

Loss of force induced by high extracellular [K+] in rat muscle: effect of temperature, lactic acid and beta2-agonist.

Loss of K+ from active muscles, leading to increased [K+]o, has been proposed to cause muscle fatigue by reducing excitability. Since exercise increases muscle temperature, we investigated the influence of temperature on muscle [K+]o sensitivity. Intact rat soleus or extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were mounted on force transducers and stimulated electrically to evoke short isometric tetani at regular intervals. In each experiment, control force at 4 mM K+ was initially determined at every temperature used. In soleus muscles at 20 degrees C, 9 mM K+ reduced force to 33 +/- 5 % of contr

Multi-directional millinewton force sensing for human-computer interaction based on an optoelectronic-integrated flexible tactile device.

Flexible optical force sensors have shown great potential in human-computer interaction (HCI), health monitoring, and wearable devices. However, conventional optical force-sensing systems typically require separate light sources and photodetectors, leading to bulky system architectures and low integration. This work presents a multi-directional millinewton sensor based on a GaN monolithically integrated optoelectronic chip and a flexible optoelectronic tactile device (FOTD). The chip integrates one micro-scale multi-quantum-well (MQW) transmitter and four-quadrant MQW receivers on the same sub

Foot and ankle forces during an automobile collision: the influence of muscles.

Muscles have a potentially important effect on lower extremity injuries during an automobile collision. Computational modeling can be a powerful tool to predict these effects and develop protective interventions. Our purpose was to determine how muscles influence peak foot and ankle forces during an automobile collision. A 2-D bilateral musculoskeletal model was constructed with seven segments. Six muscle groups were included in the right lower extremity, each represented by a Hill muscle model. Vehicle deceleration data were applied as input and the resulting movements were simulated. Three m

Increased tetanic force and reduced myoplasmic [P(i)] following a brief series of tetani in mouse soleus muscle.

Muscle performance is improved after a brief period of exercise (warm-up). One factor that is known to strongly affect force production is the myoplasmic concentration of inorganic phosphate ([P(i)]). Improved performance after warm-up may therefore be due to a reduction of [P(i)]. Herein, we show that after a warm-up protocol (15 tetani at 2-s intervals), tetanic force is increased by approximately 6% (P < 0.05) and [P(i)] is almost halved (P < 0.05) in isolated mouse soleus muscle. A warm-up protocol with longer intervals (15 tetani at 5-s intervals) reduced tetanic force and did not alter [

Minimizing Running Load via Gentle Heel Strike Techniques: A Gait Modification Study.

INTRODUCTION: Running overuse injuries are among the most common running-related musculoskeletal injuries. Modifying gait has been recognized as an effective strategy for preventing running overuse injuries. This study investigates whether gentle heel strike (GHS) running decreases the impact loading rate during 30-minute runs in healthy participants. METHODS: In this prospective cohort interventional study, 20 male participants underwent gait modification in a controlled laboratory setting, with the goal of reducing heel impact through real-time visual feedback. Comprehensive measurements, i

Does the unusual phenomenon of sustained force circumvent the speed-endurance trade-off in the jaw muscle of the southern alligator lizard (Elgaria multicarinata)?

The jaw muscles of the southern alligator lizard, Elgaria multicarinata, are used in prolonged mate-holding behavior, and also to catch fast prey. In both males and females, these muscles exhibit an unusual type of high endurance known as sustained force in which contractile force does not return to baseline between subsequent contractions. This phenomenon is assumed to facilitate the prolonged mate-holding observed in this species. Skeletal muscle is often subject to a speed-endurance trade-off. Here, we determined the isometric twitch, tetanic and isotonic force-velocity properties of the ja

Effects of Tongue Force Training on Bulbar Motor Function in the Female SOD1-G93A Rat Model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The use of exercise in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is controversial. Although moderate exercise appears to be beneficial for limb muscles in ALS, the effects of exercise on bulbar muscles such as the tongue have not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of tongue force training on bulbar motor function in the SOD1-G93A rat model of ALS. METHODS: We compared the effects of tongue force training on bulbar motor function and neuromuscular junction innervation in female SOD1-G93A rats and age-matched female wild-type controls. Half of each group underwent afternoo

Migration forces of transcatheter aortic valves in patients with noncalcific aortic insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Transcatheter aortic valves have been successfully implanted into the calcified leaflets of patients with severe aortic stenosis. However, their stability in patients with noncalcified aortic insufficiency is unknown. Similar to thoracic and abdominal aortic stent grafts, transcatheter aortic valves are subjected to antegrade ejection forces during systole. However, retrograde migration forces into the left ventricle are also generated by the diastolic pressure gradient across the closed valve. It has been suggested that leaflet calcification anchors the prosthesis, and measurements

Investigation of the CH3Cl + CN(-) reaction in water: Multilevel quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics study.

The CH3Cl + CN(-) reaction in water was studied using a multilevel quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (MM) method with the multilevels, electrostatic potential, density functional theory (DFT) and coupled-cluster single double triple (CCSD(T)), for the solute region. The detailed, back-side attack SN2 reaction mechanism was mapped along the reaction pathway. The potentials of mean force were calculated under both the DFT and CCSD(T) levels for the reaction region. The CCSD(T)/MM level of theory presents a free energy activation barrier height at 20.3 kcal/mol, which agrees very well with th

Local and global effects of inertial force components producing brain strain during head impacts.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a brain dysfunction caused by an external mechanical force and is a leading cause of disability worldwide. In traumatic brain injury, the brain strain is driven by inertial force associated with the head acceleration. We identified three distinct mechanisms by which inertial forces induce brain strain: the global rotation effect, the global translation effect, and the local force effect. The global rotation and translation effects arise from whole-brain movement relative to the skull, produce brain strain through shearing, pushing and pulling, respectively. In c

[Recording expulsive forces during childbirth using intercostal muscle electromyogram: a pilot study].

OBJECTIVE: The expulsive forces of childbirth can be included among the many potential risk factors implicated in the subsequent development of perineal disorders. The objective of this study was to devise a non-invasive way to measure abdominal pushing that would accurately represent the expulsive forces during childbirth. PATIENTS AND METHODS: By means of intravesical and intrauterine manometry, and electromyography (EMG) of intercostal muscles, we quantified these forces in 21 women during vaginal delivery. RESULTS: A mixed Ancova model showed the integral of intravesical pressure to be s

The effects of drilling force on cortical temperatures and their duration: an in vitro study.

Bone loss due to thermonecrosis may weaken the purchase of surgically placed screws and pins, causing them to loosen post-operatively. The goal of this study was to determine how differences in applied drilling forces affect the temperature of cortical tissue near the drilling site. Results from thermocouples placed into fresh cortical bone indicate that increasing the applied drilling force resulted in a significant decrease (P=0.001) of maximum cortical temperatures. Furthermore, increasing the drilling force resulted in a significant decrease (P=0.001) in the average duration of temperature

Number of potential reversals (turns) and amplitude of the pattern of electrical activity of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle in patients with neurogenic diseases.

We have quantified the pattern of electrical muscle activity at a force of 0.3 kg, 30% of maximum force, and maximum force in the abductor pollicis brevis muscle of 21 patients with neurogenic disorders (10 with carpal tunnel syndrome, 9 with polyneuropathy and 2 with motor neurone disease) and of 15 normal subjects. In normal subjects, the number of turns, the mean amplitude and the ratio between them were independent of maximum force, age and sex of the subjects. In 21 patients with neurogenic disorders, the cumulative diagnostic yield of the analysis of the pattern of electrical activity wa

The relationship between force exertion related to pelvic behavior and gait variables during walking in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Previous kinetic studies of walking have primarily focused on force generation in the lower limbs, and force generation related to pelvic motion has not been sufficiently examined; however, we hypothesized that, in older adults' walking, force generation associated with pelvic motion contributes to the acquisition of gait variables and ground reaction force variables. The present study aimed to identify the characteristics of force generation associated with pelvic motion during gait in older adults and to clarify its relationship with gait and GRF variables. METHODS: Three-dime

Pulling Forces Differentially Affect Refolding Pathways Due to Entangled Misfolded States in SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 Receptor Binding Domain.

Single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) experiments can monitor protein refolding by applying a small force of a few piconewtons (pN) and slowing down the folding process. Bell theory predicts that in the narrow force regime where refolding can occur, the folding time should increase exponentially with increased external force. In this work, using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we compared the refolding pathways of SARS-CoV-1 RBD and SARS-CoV-2 RBD (RBD refers to the receptor binding domain) starting from unfolded conformations with and without a force applied to the protein
