BACKGROUND: Forearm plaster casts are commonly used in orthopaedic practice for the treatment of fractures of the wrist and carpal bones. A common question put by patients seeks to clarify suitability to drive a motor vehicle. DVLA guidelines do not specifically comment about temporary immobilisation in a cast.
METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to 248 adult patients who had recently been treated in Colles' or scaphoid-type casts to determine the driving habits of the patients and their attitudes to the legality and safety of driving with a cast.

BACKGROUND: Forearm fractures are common in the paediatric age group. Closed reduction and casting are the primary means of treatment in over 90% of these fractures. Resultant deformities are usually a product of indirect trauma involving angular loading combined with rotational deformity and fragment displacement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospectively, 48 patients aged between 4 to 12 years with forearm fractures, were treated conservatively with closed reduction and a cast during a 2-year period. Functional outcomes were measured in terms of pronation and supination.

Myositis ossificans is a benign disorder of heterotopic bone formation occurring in response to soft tissue trauma. It most commonly presents in young adults and children as a painful, enlarging mass of the arm or thigh. Since there is frequently no significant history of injury, the lesion may be mistaken for a malignant bone or soft tissue tumor or infection. This article presents a case of a child in whom myositis ossificans presented with local signs and symptoms suggestive of a rapidly progressive compartment syndrome following trauma.

We aimed to evaluate patency rates following forearm arterial reconstruction and suggest improvements. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in the skeletal muscle is rare. A case of a 19-year-old female patient with an intramuscular forearm tumor showing a histopathologically overwhelming squamous element is presented. Microscopic examination revealed the classical features of SCC, including horn pearls, individual cell keratinization and intercellular bridge. A malignant spindle cell component was not detected. Neither evidence of another primary site nor skin lesion over the tumor was found and no metastatic lesion was detected in the 5 years since the appearance of the mass.

Forearm injuries are common and can vary in complexity. The fractures are easily diagnosed, but the associated soft tissue injuries may not be as obvious. This report describes a 69-year-old Japanese woman with bilateral forearm thrombophlebitis that developed soon after transvenous permanent pacemaker insertion. Tendon adhesion occurring after major replantation can be severe and extensive due to the nature of the trauma, ischaemia, prolonged oedema and/or infection. Therefore there is a high possibility of re-adhesion after tenolysis. In two cases of tenolysis after forearm replantation omentum was used as gliding material and good results were obtained.
