This report describes an uncommon granulomatous foreign body reaction that developed after lateral sinus augmentation with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM). The patient presented 5 months postoperatively with an extraoral draining fistula and intraoral swelling that failed to resolve with multiple courses of antibiotics and was initially misdiagnosed as a chronic infection. Early surgical exploration with subsequent histopathological analysis identified multinucleated giant cells enclosing residual graft particles, establishing a diagnosis of a noninfectious foreign body granuloma. Snapping or triggering of fingers is a common complaint, the most frequent cause being tenosynovitis of the flexor tendon sheath. Injury of the flexor tendon as a precursor of triggering is infrequent. Foreign body granuloma of the tendon sheath as an antecedent factor has not been yet recorded. We report a case of stenosing tenosynovitis of the flexor tendon of the thumb caused by local reaction to a foreign body.

At routine screening mammography, asymmetrically enlarged left axillary lymph nodes were seen in a healthy 70-year-old woman. Ultrasound (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the largest node revealed a foreign body reaction. The patient recalled a previous silicone implantation in her wrist. On the basis of cytologic study, normal findings of physical examination, and clinical history, a benign foreign body reaction to silicone implant material was diagnosed. Consideration of regional silicone lymphadenopathy is recommended in the differential diagnosis of unilateral enlarged lymph nod

A metal in living tissue is prone to corrosion. The interaction of the foreign body with the tissue involves the redox reaction (an electron exchange) at the interface, the hydrolysis (a proton exchange) of oxide-hydrates as products of corrosion, and the formation of metal-organic complexes in the electrolyte. Denatured tissue in contact with the foreign body is the consequence. But behaviour of metals is variable; gold, stainless steel and most other metals react as described while few others like titanium and tantalum do not. The absence of a foreign body effect of a chemical kind is, witho

Foreign bodies are objects that do not typically belong in the human body but can be ingested, inserted, or entered due to injuries. This article presents various cases and examples of foreign bodies, including objects swallowed, objects inserted into the rectum, vagina, urethra, ear, and nose, or due to injuries caused by falls, puncture wounds, and gunshot wounds. Foreign bodies can be difficult to detect, particularly if they are not inherently radio-opaque, and may be overlooked by patients who cannot provide an adequate history. These foreign bodies may cause harm to the patient. Interpre

The retention of foreign bodies after surgery is rare, but carries significant morbidity and mortality as well as financial and legal implications. Such retained items cause a foreign-body reaction, which in the case of cotton-based materials are called gossypibomas. We present the case of an 84-year-old woman with a pseudotumor secondary to a retained dressing gauze roll, presenting 5 months after resection of a gluteal sarcoma, which had raised concerns of local recurrence. We also outline the imaging modalities that may assist in diagnosis of a retained foreign body, and suggest the MRI "ro…

Contamination and subsequent retention of foreign bodies within wound surfaces may negatively influence healing following maxillofacial injuries. Larger foreign bodies that produce embedded or impalement injuries of soft tissues are easily detected. However, smaller contaminants, such as sand, gravel, food particles, wood splinters, and glass fibers, may not be easily identified in the initial examination, and their remnants may remain within the injury site even after debridement. Tissue reactions depend on the host response, type of foreign body, and nature of the wound surface. The purposes

Suture materials are widely used in urological surgery especially in regions that are in contact with urine. In this study, we aimed to compare polyglactine 910, chromed catgut and polydioxanone sutures according to stone formation and inflammation, congestion and foreign body reaction that occur on bladder mucosa. Cystotomy procedure was performed, in three groups of Wistar female rats, with 4/0 polyglactine 910, 4/0 chromed catgut and 4/0 polydioxanone sutures. All groups were divided into two sub-groups with 4 and 8-week follow up periods. Rats were treated with 20 mg kg(-1) day(-1) Ofloxac

We present the case of a 35-year-old man with a new onset of seizure disorder who was found to harbor an intraparenchymal retained foreign body related to remote orbital trauma. Imaging revealed a rim-enhancing anterior medial temporal lobe mass. Histologic evaluation of the resected mass showed evidence of acute and chronic inflammation with associated foreign material. The patient described a "bar fight" 16 years previously in which he received a blow to the orbit with a pool cue stick. The diagnosis of a foreign body reaction should be considered when an intraparenchymal mass is identified

Summary Immune reconstitution is a well recognized phenomenon associated with the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV infection. After the administration of HAART there is a rise in CD4 T-cell count in the circulation brought about by cessation of HIV replication. This allows the body to respond to antigens that it previously ignored. This manifests itself most commonly as an overt illness to previously ignored pre-existing infections such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, cytomegalovirus, cryptococca

A live, subretinal fly larva was observed in a 16-year-old Caucasian female. Argon-laser photocoagulation killed the larva without a destructive inflammatory response. The patient's vision improved from 20/200 to 20/20 as the eye recovered. Clinical photographs demonstrate the larva and the acute and later healed pathopneumonic subretinal tracks. The laser photocoagulation technique is described.

Chronic occult aspiration is an underrecognized cause of airway-centered and interstitial lung disease and can mimic inflammatory or fibrotic pulmonary disorders. Microcrystalline cellulose, a widely used pharmaceutical excipient, can provoke a foreign body giant cell reaction when aspirated into the lower respiratory tract. Because aspirated material may be focal, it can be missed on small biopsy specimens, delaying diagnosis and leading to inappropriate treatment. We report a case of a 54-year-old woman with progressive exertional hypoxemia and diffuse ground-glass opacities initially concer

Biomaterial wear debris is a known contributing factor in aseptic loosening of total joint prostheses, particularly when cementless tibial trays are used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Local inflammatory response can lead to osteolysis and aseptic loosening of implants. The resulting lesions require careful clinical evaluation. This article presents a case of a 76-year old man with a remote history of prostate cancer and cigarette smoking who presented with acute onset left knee and tibia pain 15 years after TKA. Radiographs showed an osteolytic lesion in the distal tibial diaphysis and mag

PURPOSE: The objective is to report a rare case of asymptomatic penetrating injury with a copper foreign body found during an examination for cataract surgery.
METHOD: A case report.
RESULTS: A 73-year-old woman had vision loss. Examination by pupil dilation disclosed a dark-brown metallic mass located under the anterior capsule of the lens, as well as nuclear sclerosis of the lens. Although no history of traumatic injury was reported by the patient, careful examination revealed a dot corneal opacity. This finding, and the past history of the patient that she had worked in the fabrication of

Introduction: The biocompatibility of an implanted material strongly determines the subsequent host immune response. After insertion into the body, each medical device causes tissue reactions. How intense and long-lasting these are is defined by the material properties. The so-called foreign body reaction is a reaction leading to the inflammation and wound healing process after implantation. The constantly expanding field of implant technology and the growing areas of application make optimization and adaptation of the materials used inevitable. Methods: In this study, modified liquid silicone

Drop weld injuries to the tympanic membrane and middle ear caused by hot sparks or molten slag are a rare but significant injury. Steel workers and welders who are regularly exposed to flying sparks and molten metal slag are predisposed. This type of transtympanic thermal injury occurs when the slag literally drops into the external auditory canal and burns through the tympanic membrane. A spectrum of severity of injury occurs which includes chronic tympanic membrane perforation, chronic otorrhoea, facial nerve injury and deafness. Chronic tympanic membrane perforation is the most common seque

The aim of this study was to compare the incidence, size and localisation of adhesion formation following open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy and to determine immune and foreign body reactions in the liver bed. The experimental animals were divided into two groups: open (OC) versus laparoscopic (LC) cholecystectomy. In the 14th postoperative day the animals were reoperated, types and size of adhesion were measured and tissue samples were extracted from the liver bed for histology. Dense, curtain-like adhesions were formed in OC group. The adhesions developed not only in the operation area bu

BACKGROUND: Nonabsorbable sutures are still the main choice for acute Achilles tendon rupture (AATR) repair due to strength provided. However, the rerupture rates, infection risks, foreign body reaction, and postsurgical recovery differences between absorbable and nonabsorbable suture materials in AATR repair have not been carefully reviewed.
METHODS: A systematic review was done on PubMed, EBSCO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase to find research studies in relation to complications associated with AATR repair using the PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias from each s

Introduction: The management of wounds with possible presence of a foreign body can pose major problems, especially for bodies that cannot be seen in X-ray scans. The most common materials of this type include wood and glass. The size of the foreign body is also important. If overlooked and left behind, even the smallest foreign body may result in permanent damage to local tissues or contribute to a systemic infection such as sepsis. The presence of a foreign body is not detected upon primary wound management in one-third of patients. Presented herein are the cases of four p
