PURPOSE: To assess the use of a 2-mm miniplate as a dorsal blocking plate to stabilize the central avulsion fragment in a proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) volar fracture dislocation.
METHODS: This was a case series comprising 8 patients with volar fracture dislocation of the PIP joint. The average age of the patients was 36 years. The patients were managed by this technique within an average of 11 days following the injury. The clinical outcome measurements included the assessment of pain and range of motion of the PIP and distal interphalangeal joints.
RESULTS: The average follow-up dur…

The Bosworth fracture dislocation is a rare type of ankle fracture and is usually unrecognized on initial radiographs, therefore early open reduction is recommended. This study reports a 51-year-old female with uncommon imaging and clinical features. Preoperative X-ray, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging of the ankle showed posterior detached dislocation of the intact distal fibula, the loose osteochondral fragments located in the tibiotalar joint, and the rupture of the deltoid ligament. Due to the initial infected wound on the severely swollen ankle, delayed arthroscopy-assi…

We encountered a case of capitellum fracture with radial head dislocation in which it was challenging to diagnose whether the dislocation was coincident with the fracture or this was chronic dislocation that presented before the fracture. Chronic radial head dislocation may be congenital or could occur in patients with untreated post-traumatic dislocation, although diagnosis is particularly challenging if the radial head dislocation is unilateral. Classical capitellum fracture involves anterosuperior bone fragment dislocation. However, in the present case, the bone fragment was present beneath

Complex elbow instability is difficult to surgically address. Careful consideration of the fractures and soft tissue injuries is required. We present the case of a patient who sustained an open fracture-dislocation of the elbow with significant loss of the external humeral condyle and partial loss of the olecranon. He was surgically treated with an iliac crest tricortical autograft fixed with a buttress plate and a lag screw. His lateral ulnar collateral ligament was reconstructed with tendinous autograft collected from his third and fourth extensor digitorum longus tendons. While the procedur

Posterior shoulder fracture-dislocation is a rare injury accounting for approximately 0.9 % of shoulder fracture-dislocations. Impression fractures of the articular surface of the humeral head, followed by humeral neck fractures and fractures of the lesser and grater tuberosity, are the more common associated fractures. Multiple mechanisms have been implicated in the etiology of this traumatic entity most commonly resulting from forced muscle contraction as in epileptic seizures, electric shock or electroconvulsive therapy, major trauma such as motor vehicle accidents or other injuries involvi

INTRODUCTION: Elbow dislocations in children are rare injuries. These injuries are often in the form of complex injuries that is accompanied by the median nerve damage and medial epicondyle fracture in the pediatric age group. Open elbow dislocation without fracture in the pediatric age group has been reported very rarely in the literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The purpose of this study is to present an 8-year-old patient who has open elbow dislocation without fracture accompanying with brachial artery injury. In the clinical examination of the patient, there was an open wound in the transve

OBJECTIVE: Femoral nerve block (FNB) is increasingly used as an analgesic modality in patients with femoral fracture both in the emergency department and preoperatively. We describe an occurrence of unexpected dislocation of the fracture after FNB.
CASE REPORT: An FNB was administered to treat pain in a 48-year-old patient with metastatic breast carcinoma and multiple bone metastases. A diagnostic FNB with 20 mL of 0.25% levobupivacaine resulted in analgesia but also in unexpected gross deformity in the proximal right femur. An x-ray revealed a pathologic fracture of the proximal third femur

Traumatic injuries of the elbow in children pose a diagnostic challenge. They demand precise knowledge of radiographic anatomy, growth characteristics of healthy and injured bones as well as specific fracture dynamics in this age group. Dislocation of the elbow is rare in children, accounting for 3-6% of all childhood elbow injuries. Fractures at the distal humerus and proximal forearm have been extensively discussed in the literature. We describe a unique case of a 4-year-old child presenting with a traumatic radial head fracture and ulnar dislocation not previously reported. Diagnosis and re

We are reporting the one-year follow-up for a case of traumatic atlantoaxial dislocation associated with an odontoid fracture. This injury combination is rare and serious because of its resulting instability. After an unsuccessful attempt at closed reduction with traction, an open reduction with occipitocervical fixation was performed using a posterior approach. Based on our experience and a review of the published literature, the method for managing such an injury is discussed. If closed reduction with traction is successful, subsequent treatment is based on the algorithms for isolated odonto

INTRODUCTION: Biepicondylar fracture of the elbow is very rare, and to date there have only been three reports of this injury and its treatment in the English scientific literature. This case report evaluates the surgical internal fixation of a biepicondylar fracture of the elbow with an associated dislocation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 15-year-old Turkish girl with a biepicondylar fracture dislocation of the left elbow. Open reduction and an internal fixation operation were applied. There were no complications.
CONCLUSION: In these injuries, open reduction and internal fixa…

We treated 15 patients with chronic unreduced hip fracture-dislocations at our hospital; all patients sustained the fracture-dislocations in motor vehicle accidents. All presented to our institution more than 6 months after initial treatment at their local hospitals with uncontained femoral heads; all underwent 1-stage total hip arthroplasty with bone grafting. These patients were monitored for a mean of 71.5 months (range, 36-96 months). All patients had significantly decreased pain, increased function, and increased range-of-motion scores using the Merle d'Aubigné scoring system. All grafts

We report a compression injury of the wrist with a unique pattern of axial radial dislocation of the carpus. Reposition was through a dorsal and palmar approach; all disrupted ligaments were sutured, and fixation of the carpal bones was performed with K-wires. The functional result was 70% of range of motion and 75% of strength with minimal symptoms.

Among patients with patellar dislocation, a small fragment is occasionally found along the medial border of the patella. However, the detailed pathology of this fracture has not been clearly described, especially in relation to the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL). The purpose of this study was to describe the pathology of this fracture in relation to the MPFL. The subjects were seven patients with an acute primary patellar dislocation showing a medial marginal fracture of the patella. An open exploration was performed to confirm the relationship between the fragment and the MPFL. The MPF

Dislocation of the tibiotalar joint without associated fracture is rare. We present here a 21-year-old man who sustained open posteromedial dislocation of the left ankle without malleolar facture when he jumped and sprained his right ankle while playing basketball. The most likely mechanism is forced flexion applied to the ankle joint leading to a rupture of the anterior capsule and lateral structures of the ankle followed by an accelerating inversion stress leading to a posteromedial dislocation of the talus from the tibial condyle. Transient paresthesia was noted in the area of the superfici
