PURPOSE: The present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of anthropometric foot measurements in predicting the diameter of the intramedullary screw for fifth metatarsal fracture fixation. Secondary aim was to identify whether the fifth metatarsal intramedullary canal diameter is correlated to the fifth metatarsal length and the foot dimensions.
METHODS: In 29 cadaveric feet, the maximum length of the plantar surface of the foot (PL) and the perimeter of the foot at the level of the fifth metatarsal base (PBFM) were measured using a measuring tape. Subsequently, the fifth metatarsal was excis

PURPOSE: The treatment of irreducible or severely displaced metacarpal and phalangeal bone fractures is still much debated. The recent development of the bioabsorbable magnesium K-wire is thought to allow effective treatment upon insertion via intramedullary fixation by minimizing articular cartilage injuries without discomfort until pin removal and drawbacks, such as pin track infection and metal plate removal. Therefore, this study investigated and reported the effects of intramedullary fixation with the bioabsorbable magnesium K-wire in unstable metacarpal and phalangeal bone fractures.

PURPOSE: The ideal approach for revision surgery following femoral head salvage treatments for an intertrochanteric fracture is still up for debate. A novel variety of proximal femoral bionic intramedullary nail (PFBN) has been created in clinical practice. We aimed to compare the biomechanical results of the novel implant to conventional intramedullary and extramedullary fixation in the treatment of intertrochanteric fracture following primary internal fixation failure.
METHODS: Using finite element analysis, we created a three-dimensional model of the intertrochanteric fracture's helical bl

The fixation for lateral malleolar fracture in ankle fractures is still controversial. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to compare clinical and radiological outcomes between intramedullary nail (IMN) and plate for lateral malleolar fractures in ankle fractures. The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from databases inception to June 2023. Data on outcomes were extracted and the methodological quality of the included studies were assessed. A meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software when the data extracted from included stud

PURPOSE: Radial and ulnar fractures are one of the most common fractures in children. When closed reduction of fractures fails, elastic stable intramedullary nail (ESIN) fixation can mostly be used under the guidance of fluoroscopy. In this study, we evaluated the effect of ultrasound (US) as assistance for radial and ulnar fracture reduction and the insertion of ESINs.
METHODS: There were 56 patients with midshaft radial and ulnar fractures included in our hospital from March 2019 to August 2021. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria and according to the treatment method, they

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures have become a major public health priority due to their increasing incidence. Intramedullary (IM) nailing has gained popularity as a surgical technique for managing these fractures. However, comparative studies with extramedullary devices indicate potentially increased mechanical complications associated with IM nailing. Specifically, there have been recent reports of early implant fracture associated with the TFNA system. This study compares the rate of mechanical complications between 3 implants. Secondarily, we analysed the factors associated with implant fractur

UNLABELLED: Femoral shaft fractures are major life- and limb-threatening injuries. Such injuries, when neglected for months or years, can lead to a range of debilitating consequences. In the Indian subcontinent, there are multiple such cases that are presented to tertiary care hospitals late due to a lack of awareness and low socioeconomic constraints. These neglected cases on presentation are usually in a state of nonunion or malunion, with gross shortening and deformity affecting adjacent joint mobility. The management of neglected femur shaft fractures (NFFs) demands uphill tasks, such as a

BACKGROUND: The two techniques most utilized in the surgical treatment of humeral shaft fractures are open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) and intramedullary nailing (IMN). Although there have been multiple comparative clinical studies comparing outcomes for these two treatments, studies have not suggested one approach to be superior to the other. The purpose of this study is to perform a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of studies that evaluated the treatment of humeral shaft fractures with either ORIF or intramedullary nail.
METHODS: We conducted this meta-analysis utilizin

PURPOSE: To compare the maximum interfragmentary displacement of short oblique proximal phalanx (P1) fractures fixed with an intramedullary headless compression screw (IMHCS) versus a plate-and-screws construct in a cadaveric model that generates finger motion via the flexor and extensor tendons of the fingers.
METHODS: We created a 30° oblique cut in 24 P1s of the index, middle, ring, and little fingers for 3 matched pairs of cadaveric hands. Twelve fractures were stabilized with an IMHCS using an antegrade, dorsal articular margin technique at the P1 base. The 12 matched-pair P1 fractures w

Surgical treatment for metacarpal neck fractures may be indicated for malrotation, palmar angulation exceeding 30° or metacarpal shortening exceeding 3 mm, although these thresholds have not been firmly established. In a retrospective study, we compared the clinical and radiographic results of 54 patients with displaced fifth metacarpal neck fractures who were treated with either medial locking plates (14 patients) or retrograde intramedullary K-wires (40 patients). At a mean follow-up of 26 months (range 12 to 62), metacarpal shortening and angulation were 2 mm greater and 4° greater, respect

Introduction Metacarpal fractures account for the majority of hand fractures. Inadequate management can cause functional deficit which can lead to loss of fine hand movements. Adequate management has proven to give good outcomes. The use of intramedullary screws has given better results than the use of Kirschner wires (K-wires). Method This study was conducted at Dr. Ruth Phau Civil Hospital, Karachi (CHK) between August 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019. A total of 32 patients presented with metacarpal fractures. They were surgically managed with intramedullary headless screw fixation. Post-operat

PURPOSE: Traction table-based intrameduallary (IM) nail fixation is an accepted treatment method for displaced femoral shaft fractures in adults. However, some complications have been described. To avoid complications associated with the use of a traction table, a rapid reductor was invented. This study aims to assess the outcomes of displaced femoral shaft fractures treated by a novel minimally invasive technique that employs a rapid reductor to reduce fracture and facilitate IM nail fixation.
METHODS: Between November 2012 and March 2013, 22 cases of displaced femoral shaft fractures were e

OBJECTIVES: Malalignment has been frequently reported after intramedullary stabilization of distal tibia fractures. Nails have also been associated with knee pain in several studies. Historically, plate fixation has resulted in increased risks of infection and nonunion. Our purposes were to compare plate and nail stabilization for distal tibia shaft fractures by assessing complications and secondary procedures. We hypothesized that nails would be associated with more malalignment and nonunion.
DESIGN: Randomized, prospective study.
SETTING: Level I trauma center.
