BACKGROUND: Patellar sleeve avulsion (PSA) fractures are rare injuries that occur in in skeletally immature patients. Initial diagnosis is key to a successful outcome, as these injuries are easily overlooked on plain radiographs with poor results well documented from delayed management. High index of suspicion from the mechanism of injury, thorough clinical examination and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) help to avoid misdiagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: The case of a 12-year-old male athlete with an acute PSA after a conservative treatment of a SLJ syndrome is described. The patient was referre

Simultaneous occurrence of tibial tubercle fracture and patellar tendon avulsion is an extremely rare condition. However, they have become more frequent due to increased participation in sports at a younger age. Diagnosis is not always straightforward, and treatment consists of open reduction and internal fixation. Only a few case reports of such injuries were reported in the literature with limited information according to diagnoses, treatment, and outcome in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Avulsion fractures of the tibial intercondylar eminence are rare and occur mostly in children. The purpose of this paper is to present a case of this rare pathology and to underline the importance of early diagnosis.
CASE REPORT: A male 8-year-old child presented with pain in his left knee and difficulties to walk after a combined injury of falling and contact trauma. Radiographic studies with conventional X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan depicted a fracture of the intercondylar eminence. In this Type II fracture according to the classification of Meyers and McKeever, an

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to clarify radiographic and clinical outcomes, as well as their association, of ankle sprain in children.
METHODS: Patients who sustained a first-time ankle sprain were prospectively surveyed. Patients underwent radiography of the ankle in the mortise, lateral, anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), and calcaneofibular ligament views at the first clinic visit to assess avulsion fractures of the distal fibula. Patients with avulsion fractures underwent radiography after 8 weeks to assess bone union. The treatment method was not standardized and was determi

INTRODUCTION: Isolated tibial tubercle fractures or patellar tendon ruptures are common injuries in adolescents. However, combined tubercle fractures with patellar tendon ruptures are rare, and hence, there are no definitive methods of surgical fixation or post-operative protocols.
CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old healthy girl sustained an extensor mechanism injury after the left knee hyperflexion during a fall from skateboarding. On examination, the extensor mechanism was not functional against gravity. Radiographic imaging revealed a displaced tibial tubercle fracture with patella alta, and magne

Several cases of avulsion fracture of the proximal phalanx of the big toe during the lateral capsular release procedure were observed. However, these fractures have not been reported as a complication of hallux valgus surgery. The purpose of the present study was to report the proximal phalanx base fracture as an unrecognized complication and to evaluate the clinical and radiographic consequences of this complication. We retrospectively reviewed 225 feet that had undergone hallux valgus surgery involving proximal chevron osteotomy and distal soft tissue release from May 2009 to December 2012.

Apophyseal avulsion fractures of the anterior inferior iliac spine are rare; they are usually seen in adolescents as a result of sudden contraction of the rectus femoris muscle. Treatment is usually conservative, but surgical management may be necessary in certain circumstances. We present an unusual case of a 14-year-old male who was referred to our department for a suspicious pathological fracture of his right anterior inferior iliac spine; he was found to have an avulsion fracture of the anterior inferior iliac spine due to simple bone cyst. We discuss the treatment of this rare injury caus

Isolated avulsion fracture of the peroneus longus tendon insertion at the base of the first metatarsal is very rare. Similar to most avulsion fractures that result from excessive strain at a tendon or ligament insertion, this type of injury is caused by the strong tension exerted by the peroneus longus tendon. The mechanisms leading to this lesion and treatment options are not clearly defined. We present the case of an isolated minimally displaced intra-articular avulsion fracture at the plantar lateral base of the first metatarsal. Faced with a painful non-union following conservative treatme

A 4-mo-old, 185-kg male giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) was presented due to stifle effusion and lameness of 3-wk duration. Radiographs revealed a fracture of the extensor fossa of the lateral trochlear ridge of the femur at the origin of the peroneus tertius. Under anesthesia, dysfunction of the reciprocal apparatus was documented by flexing the stifle while the tarsus remained extended. An avulsion fracture of the origin of the peroneus tertius and extensor digitorum longus muscle was diagnosed. An exploratory arthroscopy of the femorotibial joint was followed by arthrotomy to ex

Avulsion fractures of the calcaneal tuberosity represent only 1.3% to 2.7% of calcaneal fractures. These fractures are common pathologically in nature and attributed to decreased bone mineral density. Calcaneal insufficiency avulsion (CIA) fracture in patients with diabetes mellitus is most likely due to Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) as described by the Brodsky classification (Brodsky 3B). Traditional open reduction and internal fixation is difficult in all calcaneal avulsion fractures because of poor bone quality. The authors report the first known description of the use of fracture fragment

Dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon as an isolated injury is rare. The diagnosis is often delayed due to its rarity and the need for various second line imaging modalities. We present a case of a dislocated posterior tibialis tendon that resulted in an avulsion type fracture of the medial malleolus. The fracture was openly reduced and internally fixed with inter-fragmentary screws. The patient was asymptomatic at 1 year follow-up.

Avulsion fractures involving the radial wrist extensor tendons are extremely rare. Only 8 avulsion fractures of the extensor carpi radialis longus and 7 avulsion fractures of the extensor carpi radialis brevis have been previously reported. We know of no case involving an isolated avulsion fracture of the base of the third metacarpal where the extensor carpi radialis brevis attachment to the fracture fragment was still completely intact. This article reports a patient with an isolated avulsion fracture of the extensor carpi radialis brevis insertion treated by open reduction and internal fixat

Avulsion fractures of the tibial tubercle are uncommon. Bilateral tibial tubercle avulsion fractures are extremely rare. In this article, we describe Watson-Jones type III simultaneous bilateral tibial tubercle avulsion fractures in a 17-year-old boy who fell on the ground while taking off in high jump in sport. An open anatomic reduction and internal fixation was performed. We report here on the successful surgical treatment of a simultaneous bilateral fracture of the tibial tuberosity in an adolescent. These types of fractures involve a growth plate, extend through the articular surface and

Patients who have sustained an avulsion fracture and present clinically during the healing phase of the injury may manifest a mass that clinically and radiographically mimics a malignant neoplasm. A 15-year-old male soccer goalkeeper presented with a large ossified mass in the soft tissues overlying the right hip 6 months after experiencing a popping sensation in his hip joint during a game. Although an osteosarcoma was suspected clinically and radiographically, a Tru-Cut needle biopsy of the lesion revealed reactive bone formation. Correlation of the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic fin

Based on a review of the literature and our study of six cases, we investigated avulsion fractures of the tibial tuberosity in the athletic adolescent. A study of the mechanism of this acute injury helps to explain the different types of avulsion fractures of the tibial tuberosity. An understanding of predisposing factors and the biomechanical conditions leading to this injury may help identify those young athletes at the highest risk and may help the surgeon determine the most effective treatment for such a fracture. No complications were experienced by the patients in our study. Displaced fr

Greater tuberosity fractures with severe retraction are surgically challenging, with no universally accepted surgical procedure. This case report presents a case in which a muscle advancement technique was successfully applied to facilitate the reduction and fixation of a severely retracted greater tuberosity fracture. A 75-year-old female presented with persistent left shoulder pain for more than 3 weeks following a fall. Radiographs revealed a displaced greater tuberosity fracture. During surgery, via a deltoid-split approach, initial attempts to reduce the fragments using sutures placed in
