Operative management of closed intra-articular fractures of distal end of humerus in adults.

This is a study of 60 patients with mean age of 30 years having intra-articular fracture of distal humerus of type C (AO classification). We treated these fractures by open reduction and internal fixation through transolecranon approach. Mean duration of operative time with that of injury was 10 days. In all the cases 1st the intracondylar fracture was fixed followed by reconstruction and stabilisation of medial and lateral pillar by 1/3 tubular plate and 3.5 mm dynamic compressent plate (DCP) or recon plate respectively. Minimum follow-up was of 1 year duration with average follow-up of 3 yea

A new closed reduction technique for the treatment of radial neck fractures in children.

Displaced radial neck fractures in the skeletally immature patient are uncommon and can be difficult to reduce. We describe a new technique for the closed reduction of radial neck fractures in children. One of the authors (R.M.) has used this technique in treating 6 children with displaced radial neck fractures. This was a retrospective review carried out at a tertiary care hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. All charts and radiographs were reviewed. One patient underwent an ultrasound assessment to assist reduction (case 4). Average age of the patients was 9 years and 6 months. Average fo

Completely displaced supracondylar humerus fractures in children: results of open reduction versus closed reduction.

This retrospective study was performed to understand the clinical results after closed reduction and open reduction in 35 children (mean age 6.4 years) with completely displaced supracondylar fractures of the distal humerus between 1996 and 2000. Closed reduction (21 cases) was attempted, with open reduction (14 cases) indicated in irreducible cases with or without severe swelling. After an average follow-up of 22 months, according to Flynn's criteria, the results were excellent in 18, good in 12, fair in 2, and poor in 3. The satisfactory results rates were similar for closed and open reducti

Intramedullary rod fixation of femoral shaft fractures: comparison of open and closed insertion techniques.

Meta-analysis of published series of intramedullary rod fixation in fractured femurs revealed significantly higher union rates, lower deep infection rates and a better range of knee motion when closed rather than open techniques of insertion were used. A separate retrospective review of 58 femoral fractures at one hospital showed outcomes consistent with those reported in the literature; these results were obtained during a 6-year period when staff were learning closed techniques. Technical failures of the closed technique can be avoided by paying attention to well-established operative detail

A fracture pain model in the rat: adaptation of a closed femur fracture model to study skeletal pain.

BACKGROUND: Because of the relative lack of understanding of the mechanisms that drive skeletal pain, the purpose of this study was to adapt a previously validated closed femur fracture model to quantitatively evaluate skeletal pain in female and male rats. METHODS: Three-month-old female and male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized, and a stainless steel pin was inserted into the intramedullary space of the left femur. Three weeks later, the rats were reanesthetized, and left femoral diaphyses were fractured using a standardized impactor device. At 1-21 days after fracture, skeletal pain w

Analysis of Factors Affecting the Union of Closed Subtrochanteric Femur Fractures treated by Cephalomedullary Nailing.

INTRODUCTION: With surgical advancements and improved implants and instrumentation, nailing is the procedure of choice in subtrochanteric fractures. However, failure in achieving reduction of the multidirectional displacement of the fragments prior to passing the nail, contributes to delayed/non-unions at the fracture site leading to implant failures. In this study, we aim to analyse the factors affecting union of closed subtrochanteric fractures treated by nailing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, closed subtrochanteric fractures treated with cephalomedullary nailing betwe

Radiographic evaluation in three dimensions of condylar fractures with closed treatment in children and adolescents.

The study aimed at investigating a new three-dimensional classification of healing morphology in condylar fractures in children and adolescents after closed treatment, and establish its association with fracture type and clinical outcomes. The medical records of children and adolescents with condylar fracture were reviewed, retrospectively. The clinical outcomes were assessed by mandibular deviation during mouth opening, Helkimo anamnestic index (Ai), and Helkimo clinical dysfunction index (Di). The condylar healing morphology was evaluated through three-dimensional CT images after 1-2 years o
