Intraoperative sentinel lymph node examination by imprint cytology and frozen sectioning during breast surgery.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of intraoperative imprint cytology and frozen sectioning of sentinel lymph nodes in patients with clinically node-negative breast cancer. METHODS: Sentinel node biopsy was performed in 101 patients with stage I or II breast cancer with clinically negative nodes using a dye-guided method. Intraoperative evaluation of sentinel node involvement by imprint cytology and frozen sectioning was compared with the final histopathological results of permanent sections. Tumour-negative nodes in paraffin sections stained by haemat

Local ampullary resection with careful intraoperative frozen section evaluation for presumed benign ampullary neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Frozen section evaluation has been reported to be inaccurate in detecting foci of adenocarcinoma within adenomas of the ampulla of Vater, leading many authors to advocate pancreaticoduodenectomy as the method of treatment for these neoplasms. The authors hypothesized that (1) ampullary resection is less morbid than pancreaticoduodenectomy, and (2) frozen section evaluation following ampullary resection is accurate and allows for a selective application of pancreaticoduodenectomy to those with carcinoma or benign lesions too large to be locally resected. METHODS: A retrospective re

A comparative study of frozen-section immunoperoxidase and flow cytometry for immunophenotypic analysis of lymph node biopsies.

Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry and frozen-section immunoperoxidase was compared on 21 consecutive lymph node biopsy specimens, of which a diagnosis of lymphoma was made for 11 specimens. Samples for flow cytometry were obtained by a fine-needle aspiration technique. Concordance between frozen-section immunoperoxidase and flow cytometry for all routine markers on all specimens ranged from 76 to 100%. In general, B-cell markers showed poorer concordance than T-cell markers, with kappa and lambda light chains having the poorest concordance, at 76% each. Flow cytometry was significantly more

Diagnostic accuracy of fine-needle aspiration biopsy versus frozen section in solitary thyroid nodules.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy is widely used in the diagnosis and management of the solitary thyroid nodule. It is the most accurate tool available and decreases the need for ultrasonography and thyroid scanning. In those patients who are selected for surgical treatment by fine-needle aspiration biopsy, it has been advocated as a guide to determining the extent of operation. Frozen section, which usually serves as the surgeon's guide, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy both have varying accuracy rates. Few direct comparisons have been made. We studied 198 aspirates in 198 patients who presented

A Comparative Analysis of Optimal Cutting Temperature (OCT) Compound and Water as Embedding Media in Frozen Section.

OBJECTIVE: The commonly used embedding medium in frozen section is a commercially available optimal cutting temperature (OCT) compound, which is a water-soluble mixture of glycols and resins. However, its high cost limits its widespread use in laboratories with limited resources. In the present study, we compared two embedding media (OCT compound & Water) based on the mean freezing time and effect on the quality of section in terms of staining and the presence of freezing artifacts in different types of tissues. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fresh & unfixed specimens from 45 cases were analysed prosp

Impact of nutritional profile on pain and functionality in patients with frozen shoulder: a cross-sectional observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Frozen shoulder (FS) is a chronic and painful joint disorder characterized by progressive stiffness and functional limitation. Its multifactorial pathophysiology remains poorly understood, although emerging evidence suggests a role for low-grade inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and immune-endocrine imbalance. Nutrition and lifestyle factors may therefore represent modifiable contributors to disease development and progression. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study investigated the association between dietary profile, physical activity, pain intensity, and shoul

Margin Assessment in Breast-Conserving Surgery: A Comparative Analysis of Frozen Section and Cavity Shave Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Margin status is a critical determinant of local recurrence after breast-conserving surgery (BCS). Achieving negative margins at the initial operation remains a key goal to optimize oncologic outcomes and minimize the need for additional surgery. Techniques to reduce positive margins include intraoperative frozen section (FS) analysis and cavity shave margins (CSMs). This study aimed to compare re-excision rates and operative times between these approaches. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analyzed adults undergoing BCS with or without sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) from J

[Intraoperative frozen section diagnostics for low rectal cancer-Primary surgery vs. neoadjuvant pretreatment].

Depending on the extent of the tumor, the treatment strategies for rectal cancer include primary surgical resection or, in the case of locally advanced carcinoma, neoadjuvant chemo(radio)therapy (C[R]Tx) or total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT), usually followed by surgical treatment. During resection, it is important to find a balance between radicality and preservation of function. Current data show that shorter safety margins are possible for patients who received neoadjuvant treatment without compromising the oncological outcome. This enables continence-preserving surgery in many patients with l

Cesarean section history affects the outcomes of frozen embryo transfer in IVF/ICSI: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Cesarean section (CS) rates have risen globally, with cesarean scar defect (CSD) being a common complication. Few studies have investigated the impact of CSD on in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection frozen embryo transfer (IVF/ICSI-FET) outcomes. This study assessed how prior CS history (with or without CSD) affects IVF/ICSI-FET outcomes compared with prior vaginal delivery (VD). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 985 IVF/ICSI-FET patients: 597 patients with prior VD (VD group) and 388 with prior CS (CS group). The CS group was subdivided into those without CSD

Characterization of pleural metastasis in non-small cell carcinomas undergoing intraoperative frozen section examination.

BACKGROUND: Pleural biopsy via open surgery or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is consistently performed in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) for diagnostic tumor confirmation, tumor staging, and tumor tissue acquisition. We investigated the clinicopathological characteristics of pleural metastasis in NSCLC, with a specific focus on the comparison between adenocarcinoma (ADC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC). This study aimed to quantify how intraoperative gross finding predicts a positive-for-malignancy (PFM) diagnosis on frozen sections and to delineate histology-spe

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVES: The intraoperative frozen section examination (IFSE) of pulmonary ground-glass density nodules (GGNs) is a great challenge. In the present study, through comparing the correlation between the computed tomography (CT) findings and pathological diagnosis of GGNs, the CT features as independent risk factors affecting the examination were defined, and their value in the rapid intraoperative examination of GGNs was explored. METHODS: The relevant clinical data of 90 patients with GGNs on CT were collected, and all CT findings of GGNs, including the maximum transverse diameter, average
