Light critically limits rattan seedling establishment. To elucidate adaptive mechanisms of Calamus viminalis under varied light, we conducted a 360-day pot experiment with four shading levels (0%, 20%, 50%, 75%), integrating morphological, physiological, antioxidant, and RNA-seq analyses. Moderate shading (20%) maximized seedling height (46.97 cm) and ground diameter (12.46 mm), increased net photosynthetic rate by 57.92% versus full light, and raised soluble protein/sugar while minimizing MDA and proline-indicating the lowest oxidative damage. Severe shading (75%) suppressed carbon fixation,

Widespread deployment of wheat hybrids has been limited by high seed production costs in a commercial environment. This is due to poor outcrossing characteristics of wheat which can, in part, be attributed to poor female organ receptivity to airborne pollen. Here we underpin a detailed characterization of cross-pollination seed set progression in both emasculated wild-type, and a genetically male-sterile wheat line with a comprehensive RNA-Seq and co-expression analysis. We identify three clear phases in the fertilization window: stigma development and onset of receptivity, effective pollinati

Apple peel color is a key determinant of fruit quality and consumer preference. To elucidate the molecular basis underlying the peel color difference between 'Jinhong' (JH) apples and 'Hongjinhong' apples (HJH, a deep red bud sport of JH apples), we integrated physiological assays, widely targeted metabolomics, transcriptomics, and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) to analyze peel pigment contents, metabolite profiles, and gene expression dynamics during fruit development. The deep red phenotype of HJH peel was primarily attributed to enhanced anthocyanin accumulation rather than alteration

Glandular trichomes are specialized structures that play a crucial role in plant defense and the production of secondary metabolites. In this study, we investigated the role of NtispH, a key enzyme in the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway, in regulating glandular trichome density and terpenoid biosynthesis in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). Our results showed that over-expression of NtispH led to a significant increase in glandular trichome density, with an average rise of 54.56%. Notably, the density of long-stalked trichomes increased by an impressive average of 131.14%. Additionally, ov

Cannabis sativa is a dioecious crop whose agricultural productivity is linked to its sex expression. In a medicinal context, only female flowers produce an abundance of glandular trichomes responsible for producing valuable cannabinoids. Thus, understanding sex-determining factors is vital in C. sativa crop improvement for specific end uses. Although an X/Y sex chromosome system determines sex, manipulating ethylene pathways can alter sex expression. We used comparative RNA-seq and metabolite analysis on floral tissue to explore the regulation of male-to-female sex reversion and changes in sec

High-level expression systems in plants are required for basic research or to enhance the desired traits. However, most expression systems modify the upstream region of the native gene, which can result in loss of expression characteristics. In a previous study, we found that the 3′ downstream region of the sulfate transporter SULTR2;1 gene (TSULTR2;1) is responsible for increased gene expression under sulfur deficiency (−S), regardless of the 5′ upstream region used in the system. In this study, we aimed to establish an expression regulation system based on sulfate concentration using this do

Low-temperature stress (LTS) inhibits the growth and yield of pitaya. HuBBX1, a cold-tolerance transcription factor, was identified based on the physiological and transcriptomic analyses between two pitaya cultivars. HuBBX1 enhances plant cold tolerance via the activation of cold-regulated (COR) genes. Low-temperature stress (LTS) affects fruit quality and yields. Pitaya plants are sensitive to LTS; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying LTS in pitaya remain poorly understood. In this study, the chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic system, cold tolerance-associated physiological inde

BACKGROUND: Bupleurum chinense DC. is a commonly used medicinal plant, and the main bioactive compounds are saikosaponins (SSs), which significantly influence its therapeutic quality. 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) is the first rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate (MVA) pathway, providing precursors for SSs biosynthesis. The lack of studies on the HMGR gene family in B. chinense has limited further understanding of the SSs biosynthesis mechanism. This study performed a genome-wide analysis of the BcHMGR gene family, including phylogenetic and gene structure analysis,

The spontaneous adventitious bud (SAB) mutant of sugarcane, which forms clustered buds on the stem, provides a unique system for elucidating the mechanisms underlying in vivo regeneration and plant meristem differentiation anomalies. The present study investigated the mechanism underlying SAB formation in the sugarcane mutant 'YZ2018-81' through an integrated approach combining histological analysis, endogenous hormone profiling, and RNA-sequencing. Histological analysis revealed that the adventitious buds originated from the dedifferentiating cortical parenchyma cells, following a development

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a globally important crop, typically requiring pollination for fruit set. Seedless fruit production-fruit set without pollination (parthenocarpy)-is a desirable trait for horticulture, but its molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Research on tomato fruit set has largely focused on phytohormones such as auxin and gibberellins (GAs), while the role of jasmonic acid (JA) remains unclear. Here, we identified a novel seedless mutant, Sldad1 (Solanum lycopersicum defective in anther dehiscence1) with a mutation in JA biosynthesis induced by ethyl methanesul

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroid hormones that are essential for plant growth, development, and environmental adaptation. They control the division, elongation, and differentiation of various cell types throughout the entire plant life cycle, affecting growth and the stress response. Therefore, fine-tuning of BR biosynthesis and modulation of signaling pathways offer possibilities for developing cultivars characterized by adjusted plant architecture or improved stress tolerance to benefit crop production. Additionally, precise BR treatments can be employed to increase the productivity of cro

ACC-synthase (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase), also known as the ACS gene, plays a pivotal role in ethylene production, which is of great importance in the fruit ripening process for producing saleable yield (marketable fruit). The ACS gene family presumably controls stress responses, plant growth and development, and particularly fruit ripening. Computational biology was used as an essential tool to identify seven ACS genes in Carica papaya (red hermaphrodite) using an RNA-seq database (NCBI GEO). Further, the phylogenetic relationships of ACS genes determined gene family resembla

Styphnolobium japonicum is valued for its flavonoid-rich flowers, yet the developmental regulation of these metabolites remains unclear. Here, we integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyzes across four floral stages to reveal dynamic changes in flavonoid biosynthesis. Flavonoids emerged as the predominant metabolites, showing distinct stage-specific accumulation. Early stages showed high expression of CHS and F3H, with naringenin and eriodictyol as dominant metabolites. Mid-development maintained FLS-driven flavonol production, yielding quercetin and kaempferol derivatives. Late stages

Safflower has recently garnered increasing attention as a promising oil crop. The oil content of safflower achenes and the efficiency of subsequent oil extraction are significantly influenced by the hull/pericarp percentage (the ratio of the pericarp weight to the total achene weight). However, the genetic regulation mechanism controlling the hull development remains largely unexplored. In this study, we conducted phenotypic, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses on two safflower varieties with distinct hull percentage: normal hull (NH) and thin hull (TH). Our results revealed that the high
