Klebsiella pneumonia infection rates have increased dramatically. Molecular typing and virulence analysis are powerful tools that can shed light on Klebsiella pneumonia infections. Whereas 77.7% (28/36) of clinical isolates indicated multidrug resistant (MDR) patterns, 50% (18/36) indicated carpabenem resistance. Gene prevalence for the AcrAB efflux pump (82.14%) was more than that of the mdtK efflux pump (32.14%) in the MDR isolates. FimH-1 and mrkD genes were prevalent in wound and blood isolates. FimH-1 gene was prevalent in sputum while mrkD gene was prevalent in urine. Serum resistance as

Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPN) infections pose heightened risks in the geriatric population due to weakened immunity, prevalent comorbidities, potential exposure in long-term care settings, and increased likelihood of antibiotic resistance (ABR). The study focused on the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of KPN infections, the presence of ABR genes in KPN, and the genomic characterization of KPN obtained from geriatric patients in Chattogram. A total of 543 specimens were collected from four hospitals in Chattogram, along with demographic data from hospital records. Genomic DNA was extracted f

We aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of pathogenic Escherichia coli strains isolated from fecal samples of calves and buffalo calves (2008-2013), in Minas Gerais, Brazil, as well as the frequency of O157 gene and strains carrying extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and mobile colistin resistance (mcr) genes. E. coli strains (n=518) were tested for susceptibility against ten antimicrobials. Tetracycline was the antimicrobial with the highest resistance rate (382/518), followed by ampicillin (321/518), sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (312/518), chloramphenicol (192/5

Salmonella Genomic Island-1 (SGI-1) harbors a cluster of genes encoding multidrug resistance (MDR). SGI-1 is horizontally transmissible and is therefore of significant public health concern. This study presents two novel realtime PCRs detecting three SGI-1 protein-coding genes and a SGI-1 fingerprinting assay. These assays were applied to 445 European enterobacterial isolates. Results from real-time PCRs were comparable to those obtained from gelbased PCRs used for the detection of SGI-1, but were rapid to perform and suitable for large-scale screening. Furthermore, real-time PCRs also detecte

BACKGROUND: Although antimicrobial resistance is increasingly common in equine medicine, molecular and epidemiological data remains scarce.
OBJECTIVES: We estimated the prevalence of, and risk factors for, shedding of multidrug resistant (MDR), extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing, and AmpC β-lactamase-producing, or some combination of these in Escherichia coli in horses in France. We characterized ESBL/AmpC isolates for antimicrobial susceptibility and the presence of virulence and ESBL/AmpC-associated resistance genes.
ANIMALS: Fecal samples from healthy adult horses at 41 premis

In Enterobacteriaceae, membrane permeability is a key in the level of susceptibility to antibiotics. Modification of the bacterial envelope by decreasing the porin production or increasing the expression of efflux pump systems has been reported. These phenomena are frequently associated with other resistance mechanisms such as alteration of antibiotics or modification of the drug targets, in various clinical isolates showing a Multi Drug Resistant phenotype (MDR). In Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Salmonella enterica several genes and external factors are i

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) gram-negative bacilli pose a serious and rapidly emerging threat to recipients of solid organ transplants (SOTs). However, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), as one of the cardinal mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents in SOT recipients, remain obscure. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of strains producing ESBLs in SOT patients with MDR gram-negative bacilli infections and to identify the ESBL genes carried by them.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Isolates from various clinical specimens of SOT recipients were identified usin

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) causes neonatal sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis, as well as infections of the bovine udder. The S. agalactiae hemolysin is regarded as an important virulence factor, and hemolysin expression is dependent on the cyl gene cluster. cylA and cylB encode the ATP binding and transmembrane domains of a typical ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporter. The deduced proteins contain the signature sequence of a multidrug resistance (MDR) transporter, and mutation of the genes results in a nonhemolytic and nonpigmented phenotype. To further elucidate

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in foodborne bacteria presents a significant threat to public health, especially in countries with intensive livestock production systems. Pig farming is a major source of animal protein in Thailand and is recognized as an important reservoir of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Escherichia coli is commonly used as an indicator organism for monitoring AMR, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production and pathogenic potential. This study aimed to assess the frequency of AMR, multidrug-resistant (MDR), ESBL determinants, and virulen

BACKGROUND: Amoxicillin is among the most frequently prescribed antibiotics globally, either as monotherapy or in combination with clavulanic acid as amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (AMC). However, the prolonged use of AMC and other antibiotics has intensified selection pressure, accelerating the emergence of AMC-resistant and multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. Klebsiella, a member of the ESKAPE pathogens, employs diverse resistance mechanisms against multiple classes of antibiotics. This study was aimed to identify environmental Klebsiella isolates resistant to AMC with MDR phenotype and to inves

Pyrazinamide is important in tuberculosis treatment, as it is bactericidal to semidormant mycobacteria not killed by other antituberculosis drugs. Pyrazinamide is also one of the cornerstone drugs retained in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). However, due to technical difficulties, routine drug susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for pyrazinamide is, in many laboratories, not performed. The objective of our study was to generate information on pyrazinamide susceptibility among South African MDR and susceptible M. tuberculosis isolates from pulmonary t

BACKGROUND: Patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) who are resistant to at least both rifampicin and isoniazid, lack effective treatment options in clinic. The gold standard for the diagnosis of MDR-TB is drug sensitivity test, which is time-consuming and has a relatively low positive detection rate. Screening early diagnostic biomarker for MDR-TB is urgent need in clinical practice.
METHODS: A total of 33 patients with MDR-TB, healthy controls and drug-sensitive tuberculosis (DS-TB) were included in this study. Total plasma exosomal RNA was extracted from the subjects, and t

The two-component system (TCS) is one of the primary pathways by which bacteria adapt to environmental stresses such as antibiotics. This study aimed to systematically explore the role of TCSs in the development of multidrug resistance (MDR) in Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis. Twenty-six in-frame deletion mutants of TCSs were generated from S. Enteritidis SJTUF12367 (the wild type [WT]). Antimicrobial susceptibility tests with these mutants revealed that 10 TCSs were involved in the development of antibiotic resistance in S. Enteritidis. In these 10 pairs of TCSs, functional defects in

The emergence of colistin-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) in livestock poses a major public health concern due to its zoonotic potential and multidrug resistance (MDR). The study aimed to detect mobilized colistin resistance genes (mcr-1 to mcr-9) in E. coli isolates, along with characterizing their antimicrobial susceptibility, resistance genes, virulence genes, and whole genome sequencing. We investigated E. coli contamination in a swine slaughterhouse in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. A total of 200 fecal samples were collected and screened for E. coli using selective media su

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Apart from known factors such as irrational use of antibiotics and horizontal gene transfer, it is now reported that clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) are also associated with increased antimicrobial resistance. Hence, it is critical to explore alternatives to antibiotics to control economic losses. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine not only the association of CRISPR-Cas system with antibiotic resistance but also the potential of Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) for avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) isolated fro

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa is a rising public health concern, challenging the treatment of such a ubiquitous pathogen with monotherapeutic anti-pseudomonal agents. Worryingly, its genome plasticity contributes to the emergence of P. aeruginosa expressing different resistant phenotypes and is now responsible for notable epidemics within hospital settings. Considering this, we aimed to evaluate the synergistic combination of fortimicin with other traditional anti-pseudomonal agents and to analyze the resistome of pan-drug resistant (PDR) isolate.
