SENSEYE: a resource-aware visionary framework for assisting individuals with visual disabilities.

Despite significant recent advances, visual aid systems are still limited by the use of conventional computer vision algorithms, constrained sensor capabilities, high power consumption, and reliance on cloud-based processing, which introduce latency and privacy risks. Current assistive technologies for visually impaired individuals often suffer from a lack of secure and competent communication and an inability to deal with complex computer vision tasks. This paper introduces SENSEYE, a resource-aware visionary framework that employs edge computing with a secure and competent communication mech

SURVIS: a fully-automated aerial baiting system for the distribution of vaccine baits for wildlife.

Large-scale oral vaccination of wildlife against rabies using aerial bait distribution has been successfully used to control terrestrial wildlife rabies in Europe and North America. A technical milestone to large-scale oral rabies vaccination campaigns in Europe was the development of fully-automated, computer-supported and cost-efficient technology for aerial distribution of baits like the SURVIS -system. Each bait released is recorded by the control unit through a sensor, with the exact location, time and date of release and subsequently the collected data can be evaluated, e.g. in GIS progr

Using GIS Dashboards to highlight AMR data disparities in Africa for Policy, Research, and Public Health.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to pose a major public health threat across Africa, yet available surveillance data remain highly fragmented across private, public, and academic sources. This study analysed continent-wide AMR surveillance patterns by integrating datasets from multiple independent repositories and visualising them through interactive Geographic Information System (GIS) dashboards. The objective was to generate an integrated evidence base that highlights resistance patterns, surveillance disparities, reporting gaps, and opportunities for improved AMR monitoring across A

Reducing rural health inequity through drone-based delivery: a spatial multi-criteria decision framework prioritizing epidemiological vulnerability in hub location.

OBJECTIVE: To alleviate spatial health inequities in rural areas by optimizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) medical hub location based on an epidemiological vulnerability-driven approach, correcting for the tendency of current logistics-centric models to overlook high-need rural populations. METHODS: A spatial multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework was developed for a simulated rural-urban fringe experiencing severe demographic aging. We defined a novel Epidemiological Vulnerability Index (EVI) incorporating three core dimensions: demographic aging, chronic disease burden (e.g., car

Estimating changes in center pivot irrigation in the High Plains Aquifer using a hybrid GIS-remote sensing deep learning approach, 2001 to 2023.

Since the introduction of center pivot irrigation (CPI) technologies in the 1950s, there has been a precipitous increase in irrigated cropland in the U.S. High Plains. While CPI has helped "drought proof" agriculture operations, thereby enhancing food security and permitting the expansion of agriculture operations in this semi-arid, drought-prone region, it has also contributed to groundwater depletion, which now threatens the very livelihoods of those who have become dependent on these technologies. Further compounding the issue, groundwater is a shared resource often underlying numerous juri

Where the Wildfires Are: Correlates of Disaster Preparedness Among Oregon Assisted Living Communities.

Assisted living communities (ALs) serve a growing population of older adults with long-term care needs, especially those with Alzheimer's and other dementias (ADRD), yet their capacity to prepare for hyper-complex climate-related disasters remains underexamined. Using geographic information systems (GIS), we mapped all licensed ALs with the Oregon Department of Forestry's wildfire hazard scores, and then assessed organizational correlates of preparedness with a representative sample of Oregon ALs (n = 321). ALs located in higher wildfire risk areas reported greater confidence in wildfire prepa

Prediction modeling of land surface temperature in relation to land cover dynamics and health risk perception analysis in barishal city of Bangladesh.

Rapid urbanization has brought about rapid changes in land-use and land-cover (LULC) patterns, significantly affecting land surface temperatures (LST). This study uses GIS and remote sensing techniques to assess changes in LULC classes and their impacts on LST at the Barishal City Corporation (BCC) of Bangladesh. As summer is the season with the highest temperature, the study considered the months from March to July from 1998-2024. The key findings of this study reveal a substantial increase in the mean land surface temperature, increasing by 5.75°C from 1998-2024, with the highest temperature

Assessing maximal sprinting speed in soccer - criterion validity of commonly used devices.

This study aimed to investigate the criterion validity of commonly used devices to assess maximal sprinting speed (MSS) in soccer. Thirty elite youth soccer players completed three trials of a 30-m sprint test to assess MSS. All sprints were simultaneously captured via a radar gun (Stalker ATS II), timing gates (Smartspeed Pro, Fusion Sport), a magnetic timing system (Humotion SmarTracks) and a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) (Kinexon Perform GPS Pro). The radar gun and the GNSS recorded sprinting speed continuously, while the fastest 5-m split during the 30-m sprint was used for the

Study on the variation patterns of sea surface oil spill characteristics based on GNSS-R under different wind speeds.

Marine oil spills severely pollute marine environments, making rapid and accurate detection crucial. However, current Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) oil spill detection studies overlook the impact of sea wind, leading to false or missed detections. This study simulates the mean square slope (MSS), scattering coefficient, coherent power, and delay-Doppler map (DDM), and explores the impact of sea wind on GNSS-R oil spill detection parameters. Results indicate that at wind speeds ≤3 m/s, the differences in MSS and scattering coefficient between oil and water are minima

GIS Mapping and Breast Cancer Health Care Access Gaps for African American Women.

Black women face an unequal opportunity to survive breast cancer compared with White women. One would expect that US metropolitan areas with high percentages of Black people should report similar racial disparities in breast health. Yet, this is not the case. To provide insights about breast cancer disparities in cities with above-average and below-average racial disparities, we use GIS analysis. We depict racial composition and income categories on the same map with mammography facility locations to distinguish unique patterns of mammography access, a critical resource for breast cancer care.

A spatial obesity risk score for describing the obesogenic environment using kernel density estimation: development and parameter variation.

BACKGROUND: Overweight and obesity are severe public health problems worldwide. Obesity can lead to chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. Environmental factors may affect lifestyle aspects and are therefore expected to influence people's weight status. To assess environmental risks, several methods have been tested using geographic information systems. Freely available data from online geocoding services such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) can be used to determine the spatial distribution of these obesogenic factors. The aim of our study was to develop and test a spatial obesity risk scor

Post-traumatic stress in people from the interior drylands of the Maule region, Chile in the context of climate change.

Progressive changes in local environmental scenarios, accelerated by global climate change, can negatively affect the mental health of people who inhabit these areas. The magnitude of these effects may vary depending on the socioeconomic conditions of people and the characteristics of the environment, so certain territories can be more vulnerable than others. In this context, the present study aimed to geographically analyse the levels of psychosocial impact and the types of disruptive responses related to the new territorial scenarios caused by climate change in the coastal drylands of the Ma

"BACACIX", a spatial index combining proxies of bovine and badger space use associated with extended Mycobacterium bovis circulation in France.

To better prevent and control multi-host pathogen circulation over large areas, it is essential to identify patterns of disease persistence within host communities involved in pathogen circulation at a macroscale. The aim of this study was to design and calculate "BACACIX", a spatial index of indirect contacts between cattle and badgers, two species involved in the circulation of Mycobacterium bovis, one of the main causative agents of bovine tuberculosis (bTB), in some areas of France. The index combined spatial models of land use distribution (the probable distribution defining animal use of
