Distributed reactivity model for sorption by soils and sediments. 15. High-concentration co-contaminant effects on phenanthrene sorption and desorption.

Soil and sediment materials having organic matter matrixes of different geochemical character were examined with respect to their sorption and desorption of phenanthrene in the presence of order-of-magnitude larger concentrations of trichloroethylene (TCE) and dichlorobenzene (DCB). These co-contaminants depressed phenanthrene sorption in the lowest residual solution phase concentration ranges of that target solute investigated, whereas in its highest residual concentration regions phenanthrene sorption was either not affected or was actually enhanced. In both concentration ranges, the effects

A study of keratinolytic fungi in mountain sediments. I. Hair-baiting data.

Sediments form mountain streams in Brenna (Beskid Slaski) were examined for keratinolytic fungi. A rare psychrophilic dermatophyte, Keratinophyton ceretanicus, occurred abundantly in the sediments. The qualitative and qualitative compositions of keratinolytic fungi depended on the water contamination with sewage and on the contents of plant organic material, small mineral particles and salts in the sediments.

Chemical impacts of subsurface CO2 and brine on shallow groundwater quality.

Leakage from geologic CO2 sequestration (GCS) sites to overlying shallow drinking water aquifers is a tangible risk. A primary purpose of this study is to assess the potential impacts of CO2 leakage into a fresh-water aquifer with associated CO2-water-sediment interactions. The study site is the Ogallala aquifer overlying an active demonstration-scale GCS site in north Texas, USA. Using the results of combined batch experiments and reactive transport simulations, we discuss the effects of salinity on potential trace metal release and the potential for groundwater quality recovery after leakage

The evolution of the Earth's surface iron cycle.

Formation and burial of pyrite (iron sulfide) in marine sediments exert a fundamental control on atmospheric oxygenation and seawater buffering over geological timescales. However, little is known about how the formation and delivery of its precursor, reactive iron (Fe) oxide minerals, have evolved throughout Earth history. Secular variability in reactive Fe (including Fe oxides and pyrite) preserved in marine sediments is commonly attributed solely to redox changes. Here, we develop an approach to distinguish redox-driven influences from other controls on sedimentary reactive Fe, including th

Detecting Seafloor Gas Leakage from Geologic Carbon Storage Sites: A Laboratory-Scale Distributed Acoustic Sensing Evaluation.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical technology for mitigating climate change by reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Effective monitoring of CCS sites is essential to ensure that injected CO2 remains securely trapped and does not leak into the shallow subsurface or atmosphere. Large-scale CCS in the Gulf of Mexico could be facilitated by extensive existing infrastructure and suitable geologic containment; however, legacy wells and structurally complex geology remain critical challenges for ensuring storage integrity. Traditional monitoring methods, while effective, of

Human-enhanced tsunami hazard in large lakes.

Worldwide, human-induced erosion enhances sediment delivery to lake deltas, increasing their susceptibility to collapse. In Lake Iseo, northern Italy, two millennia of intensified land use tripled sediment flux, oversteepening the delta and preconditioning it for failure. Here we show from geological records and numerical simulations that earthquakes in 1117 CE (Mw 6.5) and 1222 CE (Mw 6.0) triggered major subaqueous delta collapses, generating massive tsunamis with maximum run-ups of ~50 m and ~13 m, respectively. Historical accounts from the Vatican Library and archeological evidence support

Unique ecological functions of viral communities potentially influence microbial adaptability in deep-sea ferromanganese nodule deposits.

Ferromanganese nodule deposits represent unique deep-sea habitats characterized by metal-rich environments. However, the composition and ecological functions of viral communities inhabiting the regions remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the composition, distribution patterns, and potential ecological roles of viral community in both sediments and nodules from ferromanganese nodule deposits. Our results indicated that viral community distribution was influenced by sediment depth, habitat type, and microbial community. Furthermore, viruses may enhance the environmental adaptability

Annual Dynamics and Functional Traits of Viral Communities in Tropical Intertidal Sands of Sanya Bay.

Viruses are key regulators of marine microbial communities, yet their temporal dynamics in tropical intertidal sediments remain poorly characterized. We conducted a year-long metagenomic survey of sandy intertidal sediments in Sanya Bay (60 monthly samples from five sites) to examine viral taxonomy, community structure, lytic proteins, and auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs). Within the classifiable fraction, the assemblages were consistently dominated by Assiduviridae. However, NMDS analysis revealed a significant overall seasonal shift, with October-December samples separating from the rest of

Heterocyclic PAH pollution risks in stormwater overflows: Mechanistic elucidation of sediments as the key contributor.

Storm-induced overflows make stormwater drainage systems critical pathways for transporting emerging contaminants, such as heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs), to surface waters, particularly during storms. HPAHs exhibit greater mobility, bioavailability, toxicity, and odor potential than conventional PAHs, however, uncertainties regarding their source apportionment and environmental fate hinder targeted mitigation. Utilizing a Chemical Mass Balance model, we quantified HPAH sources in stormwater overflows and determined that sewer sediments contributed 34%-62% of total HPAH

Another one bites the dirt: a closer look into geophagy in tadpoles of Thoropa miliaris (Spix, 1824).

Geophagy, the ingestion of earthy materials such as soil or sand, is present in different animal groups, including adult frogs and their larvae. In some species, the ingestion of sediments is an intrinsic aspect of the biology of these animals. During an investigation on aspects of the natural history and morphology of tadpoles of Thoropa miliaris (Cycloramphidae) we noticed that their intestines were filled with sediments. The first question that occurred to us involved whether ingestion was accidental or part of their behavioral repertoire. These tadpoles are found in rockfaces wetted by a s

Transport and Attenuation of Human Viruses in Groundwater: Assessment of Adsorption-Induced Interfacial Inactivation and Evidence of Aggregation.

Virus transport in groundwater is a key pathway contributing to waterborne disease outbreaks and poses significant risks to public health. However, the mechanisms governing virus transport and attenuation remain poorly understood. Here, using the human enteric virus Coxsackievirus (CV-A16), we coupled experiments with a dual-marker approach (TCID50 and RT-qPCR) and a stepwise modeling strategy to quantify virus inactivation, interfacial inactivation, and adsorption during virus transport and attenuation in heterogeneous sediments. Static batch experiments revealed markedly slower CV-A16 inacti

Partitioning and transformation of diuron in water-sediment systems: Influence of Eichhornia crassipes on contaminant redistribution and metabolite formation.

Aquatic macrophytes can actively reshape contaminant fate in aquatic systems by redistributing chemicals across environmental compartments rather than promoting removal. Herbicides frequently enter aquatic systems through agricultural runoff, leading to accumulation in sediments and interactions with biota. Diuron, a persistent photosystem II inhibitor with strong affinity for organic matrices, is widely detected in aquatic environments and forms transformation products. However, the role of aquatic macrophytes in modulating its environmental fate remains insufficiently understood. Here, water

Automated and quantitative characterization of benthic habitat and associated biological communities of an unknown southeast Pacific seamount.

Seamounts are prominent seafloor features that strongly influence geological processes, ocean circulation, and benthic biodiversity. Despite their importance, most seamounts remain unmapped and poorly characterized, particularly in the southeast Pacific Ocean, a region recognized for high marine endemism and ecological isolation. In this study, we present a quantitative habitat characterization of a previously undocumented seamount, informally named Solito Seamount, located between the Nazca-Desventuradas Marine Park and the Juan Fernández Archipelago, within Chile's Exclusive Economic Zone. Microplastics pollution alters bacterial community in hyporheic sediments: A case study from the Beiluo River Basin.

Microplastics (MPs), as emerging contaminants, are widely present in rivers and accumulate in hyporheic zone sediments through processes such as aggregation and sedimentation. They pose ecological and biological risks, significantly influencing bacterial communities. However, research on the impact of MPs on bacterial communities in riverine hyporheic zone sediments remains relatively limited. This study investigated the distribution characteristics of MPs in the sediments of the Beiluo River hyporheic zone and explored the relationships between environmental factors, bacterial communities, an

Chemosynthesis enables microbial communities to flourish in a marine cave ecosystem.

Chemosynthesis, an ancient metabolism that uses chemical compounds for energy and biomass generation, occurs across the ocean. Although chemosynthesis typically plays a subsidiary role to photosynthesis in the euphotic ocean, it is unclear whether it plays a more important role in aphotic habitats within this zone. Here, we compared the composition, function, and activity of microorganisms colonising the sediment of a marine cave at mesophotic depth, across a transect from the entrance to the interior. Microbes thrived throughout this ecosystem, with interior communities having higher diversit

High temperature favors sedimentary organic carbon fixation potential via chemoautotrophy and iron fraction transformation in urban artificial lakes.

Urban artificial lake sediments play crucial role in organic carbon (OC) fixation for cities. However, the regulatory mechanism on sedimentary OC fixation by water temperature (WT) changes is still unclear. This study investigated the water qualities, organic carbon components, the microbial metabolism and iron (Fe) fractions of five lakes in summer and winter. Results revealed that high temperature group (HT) exhibited 1.5-2.5 times higher average contents of total organic carbon (TOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) and Fe-bound organic carbon (Fe-

Life in sediments fosters 'sexual' speciation in the Shewanella baltica complex.

Understanding how intra- and interspecific differentiation arises in natural microbial populations is central to explaining the processes that drive bacterial evolution. Motivated by the co-occurrence of multiple putative genospecies closely related to Shewanella baltica in Baltic Sea sediments, we investigated the genomic structure of this species complex across fine spatial scales. We analyzed 112 genome sequences from strains collected across several sediment cores and depths (0-6 cm) at Vaxön (Stockholm archipelago, Sweden) as well as earlier isolates from this site and allopatric strains

Failure characteristics of unsaturated intact loess under different hydraulic pathways.

This study systematically investigates the effects of two hydraulic pathways-wetting followed by loading (W-L) and loading followed by wetting (L-W)-on the water retention and strength characteristics of intact loess from a Xi'an metro line. Using an improved unsaturated triaxial testing system, experiments were conducted under controlled suction, net confining pressure, and shear stress levels. The Van Genuchten model accurately describes the water retention behavior, with the saturation-suction ratio (s/Sc) exhibiting a linear relationship. The Critical State Line (CSL) for the L-W pathway e

Heavy metals pollution and the associated ecological risks along the Luanhe River basin in North China.

Luanhe River is one of the important parts in Northern China hydrographic nets, which has been seriously impacted by industrialization. However, the heavy metal pollution caused by the production activities across the basin remains poorly understood, which may pose health risks to local residents. The study aims to address this gap by focusing on heavy metal pollution in sediments from 41 sampling sites along the Luanhe River basin evaluating the potential ecological risks. The results showed that, due to varying local industries, geography, and human activities, different sections exhibited d
