Giant cell tumor of bone accounts for 4% to 5% of primary bone tumors in the United States. Multicentric giant cell tumors occur in < 1% of all patients with giant cell tumors, and only 43 patients with multicentric giant cell tumor have been reported on in the literature. This series presents 3 additional cases of multicentric giant cell tumor, includes updated data for 2 patients previously reported on in the literature, and reviews 24 cases previously reported on in detail in the literature. The mechanism by which giant cell tumor involves multiple locations is not known. Multicentric giant

The authors report 23 cases of giant cell tumor (GCT) of the mobile spine, treated between 1975 and 1993, with mean follow-up of 9 years. The series was homogeneous in terms of diagnosis, staging, and treatment, carried out at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, and isolated from a series of 28 cases recorded at the Tumor Center of the Rizzoli Institute. Five of the cases were excluded either because of insufficient documentation (4), or because the tumor had occurred on Paget's disease (1). GCT of the spine is a rare disease, and has a favorable diagnosis if treatment is correct, consisting in

Giant cell arteritis should not be a diagnosis of exclusion, an afterthought, or a last thought. There is urgency to establishing this diagnosis and initiating therapy. All practitioners who treat adults will be confronted with these patients. Some will have classic presentations, some will have subtle presentations. When patients complain of fever, fatigue, malaise, weight loss, or painless vision loss, GCA should be suspected. An ESR will aid in the diagnosis (although a normal ESR does not rule it out), and sometimes temporal artery biopsy will provide certainty. Giant cell arteritis is usu

We present a case of a giant cell reparative granuloma of the frontoethmoidal region that had a large intracranial extraaxial component and was studied with MR. Although rare, giant cell reparative granuloma can be suggested in the correct clinical setting and when MR features suggest a fibrous lesion.

We describe the CT and MR findings in a patient diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis after presenting with a hemorrhagic subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGCA). While these tumors are not uncommon in tuberous sclerosis, hemorrhage into them is extremely rare.

The original descriptions of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) in the medical literature date back to 1888 and 1890, respectively. Classification criteria for PMR and GCA are not standardized since most authors used subjective criteria based on their personal experience. Only one study has evaluated criteria for PMR and has found seven variables with high discriminant value. Criteria for GCA are less varied because a positive biopsy of the temporal artery is diagnostic. However, combinations of different clinical and laboratory features have been used for diagnosis wh

Between 1962 and 1993 were treated at the Department of Neurosurgery, Medical Academy in Poznań 11 patients (10 women and 1 man) with giant-cell tumours of the spine. Their mean age was (26.27 +/- 17.56) years. In all patients pain was the presenting symptom and 10 had neurological deficits. The cervical, thoracic and lumbo-sacral spine was involved; 9 patients were treated surgically and 3 patients received adjuvant radiotherapy. The follow-up time was from 2 months to 30 years.

A patient with biopsy negative giant cell arteritis was examined and treated by our group. Since in some cases the visual loss in this disease is due to a central retinal artery occlusion, a technique to evaluate the blood flow velocity in this artery would be useful. The Duplex scanner was utilized by us in this patient to study the blood flow velocity of the central retinal artery. The flow velocity was reduced. The patient was treated with systemic steroids which lead to clinical and symptomatic improvement. After the treatment with steroids the Duplex scanner was again used to study the fl

The radiological appearance of giant cell tumors (GCT) in the developing skeleton was retrospectively assessed in 49 (10.6%) of the 462 patients with GCTs seen in consultation by the Netherlands Committee on Bone Tumors. There were 31 female and 18 male patients, all below 19 years of age. Thirty-four tumors were located in short and long tubular bones, two in the tarsus, while the others were in the pelvis, vertebral spine, and a rib. Involvement of the epiphysis in tubular bones was closely related to the age of the patient: the average age of the 3 patients with a lesion in the metaphysis w

The cytomorphology of three subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGA) is described. The tumors occurred in the left lateral ventricle of three males with tuberous sclerosis. The often-polarized spindle and epithelioid tumor cells possessed dense eosinophilic cytoplasm, eccentric nuclei and visible, occasionally prominent nucleoli. In addition, they displayed thick or hairlike processes and had a distinct tendency to form cohesive clusters as well as pseudorosettes. Occasional binucleate and multinucleate cells, as well as "strap" cells and nuclear cytoplasmic inclusions, were further feature

Giant-cell hepatitis is a frequent pattern of liver injury in the neonate, but it is rare after infancy. Such cases have been attributed to autoimmune disease, to non-A, non-B hepatitis and, most recently, to paramyxovirus infection. To better define the entity of postinfantile (syncytial) giant-cell hepatitis, we reviewed 24 biopsy specimens from 20 patients with this finding, either alone or in combination with other diagnoses. The number of multinucleated giant cells varied greatly from one specimen to another. Varying degrees of portal inflammation appeared in all but one of the patients, …

The authors present two cases of giant cell tumor of the hamate bone. The symptoms and signs were similar in both cases: pain, mild inflammatory changes, and localized swelling. The radiographic picture included lacunar osteolysis with interruption of the cortex in one case, intact cortex but more expansive lysis of the cancellous bone in the other. The findings of greatest interest were constituted by the extreme rareness of the localization, problems related to differential diagnosis, long-term follow-up in one case (20 years) and the different methods of treatment used.
