This review provides updates on acute conditions affecting the periodontal tissues, including abscesses in the periodontium, necrotizing periodontal diseases and other acute conditions that cause gingival lesions with acute presentation, such as infectious processes not associated with oral bacterial biofilms, mucocutaneous disorders and traumatic and allergic lesions. A case is described of gingival non-Hodgkins lymphoma presenting in a site previously diagnosed as HIV-periodontitis. The lymphoma presented along with other signs of HIV infection and AIDS, which taken together were compatible with increased immunosuppression and reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus. The implications of these findings are discussed, and it is suggested that areas of gingiva which show rapid localised recession, associated with HIV seropositivity, should be monitored closely and considered for biopsy if abnormal signs are detected.

10 episodes of Capnocytophaga sepsis occurred in 6 patients with granulocytopenia, malignancy, and oral mucosal ulcerations. Capnyocytophaga is a newly described genus of gliding gram-negative bacilli which is physiologically and genetically identical to Bacteroides ochraceus and biogroup DF-1 of the United States Center for Disease Control and is commonly responsible for periodontal infections.

The inflammatory components of plaque induced gingivitis and chronic periodontitis can be managed effectively for the majority of patients with a plaque control program and nonsurgical and/or surgical root debridement coupled with continued periodontal maintenance procedures. Some patients may need additional therapeutic procedures. All of the therapeutic modalities reviewed in this position paper may be utilized by the clinician at various times over the long-term management of the patient's periodontal condition.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dentists' knowledge and practice regarding HIV positive individuals' oral care in Rio de Janeiro State.
METHODS: Dentists from Rio de Janeiro State (n = 242) answered an electronic questionnaire on biosafety procedures, oral manifestations of AIDS, and knowledge of HIV infection. Collected information was stratified by gender, and data were analyzed using Chi-square and t tests.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first recognized in 1981 and in 1983 the virus responsible for this syndrome, the human immunodeficiency virus, was first isolated. There has been an increasing understanding of the many aspects related to infection with this virus and this review discusses the historical as well as the more recent findings related to infection with this virus. In particular, the pathogenesis, mode and course of infection are discussed followed by an overview of the general and oral manifestations of infection with this virus.
