Targeting Acne Bacteria and Wound Healing In Vitro Using Plectranthus aliciae, Rosmarinic Acid, and Tetracycline Gold Nanoparticles.

Gold nanoparticles from plant extracts and their bioactive compounds to treat various maladies have become an area of interest to many researchers. Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit caused by the opportunistic bacteria Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermis. These bacteria are not only associated with inflammatory acne but also with prosthetic-implant-associated infections and wounds. Studies have hypothesised that these bacteria have a mutualistic relationship and act as a multispecies system. It is believed that these bacteria form a multispecies bi

A lateral flow immunoassay for straightforward determination of fumonisin mycotoxins based on the quenching of the fluorescence of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots by gold and silver nanoparticles.

A lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was developed for the determination of fumonisin mycotoxins. The fluorescence of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), observed at excitation/emission wavelengths of 365/525 nm, is suppressed by the addition of silver nanoparticles (SNPs) or gold nanoparticles (GNPs) because SNPs overlap the excitation bands of the QDs, and GNPs overlap the emission bands. The fluorescence of the QDs is recovered upon addition of fumonisins, allowing for the sensitive detection in "positive mode" of the target mycotoxin by monitoring the changes of the QDs fluorescence intensity. The S

Synthesis and coordination ability of the first phosphavinyl(selenoxo)phosphorane: an electronic story.

The Mes*P[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Cl)-P([double bond, length as m-dash]Se)(i-Pr)2 phosphavinyl(selenoxo)phosphorane is the first derivative of this new class of compounds embedding in the same unit a λ 2 P(iii) and a λ 4 P(v) atom. This electron-rich compound is a good candidate for new coordination compounds, but also for potential biologic applications. The coordination ability of the phosphavinyl(selenoxo)phosphorane derivative towards transition metals was evaluated by means of both experimental and theoretical analyses. Along with the gold and palladium complexes, we report here t

D‑Penicillamine‑Stabilized Gold Nanoclusters as a Selective Fluorescent Sensor for Tetracyclines.

The development of simple, rapid, and cost‑effective sensing methods for monitoring antibiotic residues in water is crucial due to the widespread use of antibiotics in livestock farming and the consequent risk of environmental contamination. In this study, we present a facile synthesis of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) stabilized with D‑penicillamine (AuNC@D‑Pen), a thiolated ligand that provides excellent colloidal stability and supports strong photoluminescent properties. The synthetic protocol affords highly uniform nanoclusters whose fluorescence emission, centered at approximately 650 nm, is b

Searching for new candidates for antimalarial therapy: physicochemical and in vitro evaluation of gold(I) and silver(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes.

BACKGROUND: The global fight against malaria is currently hindered by the rapid emergence and spread of multi-drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains. This growing resistance has compromised the efficacy of frontline treatments and has led to the disease continuing to claim thousands of lives each year. Consequently, a new effective and non-toxic anti-malarial drug is urgently needed. In this context, metal-NHC (N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes have diverse physicochemical properties that could enhance biological activity and lead to the development of a new drug to combat malaria. On th

Diving into Unknown Waters: Water-Soluble Clickable Au13 Nanoclusters Protected with N-Heterocyclic Carbenes for Bio-Medical Applications.

The use of gold nanoclusters in biomedical applications has been steadily increasing in recent years. However, water solubility is a key factor for these applications, and water-soluble gold nanoclusters are often difficult to isolate and susceptible to exchange or oxidation in vivo. Herein, we report the isolation of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-protected atomically precise gold nanoclusters functionalized with triethylene glycol monomethyl ether groups. These clusters are highly luminescent and water soluble and are shown to be stable in biological media. Importantly, the core structure, sta

Preparation of Nanoparticle-Immobilized Gold Surfaces for the Reversible Conjugation of Neurotensin Peptide.

Polymer coatings as thin films stand out as a commonly used strategy to modify biosensor surfaces for improving detection performance; however, nonspecific biomolecule interactions and the limited degree of ligand conjugation on the surface have necessitated the development of innovative methods for surface modification. To this end, methacrylated tethered telechelic polyethylene glycol (PEG-diMA) chains of three different molecular weights (2, 6, and 10 kDa) were synthesized herein and used for obtaining thiolated nanoparticles (NPs) upon adding excess amounts of a tetra-thiol crosslinker. Manganese-Doped Zinc-Mediated Assembly of Gold Nanoclusters as a Dual-Emitting Fluorescent Probe for Surface-Controlled Ratiometric Detection of Biothiols in Complex Biofluids.

We developed a ratiometric fluorescent probe using zinc-mediated assemblies of Mn2+-doped gold nanoclusters for the sensitive detection of biologically relevant thiols. Thiol binding selectively enhanced the nanoclusters's emission at 477 nm, while Mn2+ emission at 570 nm remained unaltered, enabling precise ratiometric sensing. The probe showed performance in complex media, like blood serum, and showed high selectivity, with no allied response to non-thiol analogues. This platform offers a reliable and practical tool for thiol detection under physiological conditions.

Pt-S bond stabilized DNAzyme nanosensor with thiol-resistance enabling high-fidelity biosensing.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been widely utilized in developing DNAzyme-functionalized nanosensors, most of which were engineered by attaching the thiolated DNAzymes to Au NPs via Au-S bonding. However, the Au NP-DNAzyme nanosensors always suffer from signal distortion when applied in complex environment with abundant thiols, which poses challenge for practical applications. Here, we focus on addressing the root cause of the issue and propose to decorate the Au NPs with a thin layer of platinum, thus facilitating the conjugation of DNAzymes through Pt-S bonding, a thiol-resistant cross-lin

Zn/Al layered double hydroxide and carboxymethyl cellulose composite beads as support for the catalytic gold nanoparticles and their applications in the reduction of nitroarenes.

Until now, many efficient catalysts have been reported that are used for the reduction of nitroarenes. However, a catalyst reusability is a challenge that is often faced in practical environment. In this report, we designed a hydrogel composite (CMC-LDH), which act as support and making it possible to address this challenge. In this research work, zinc/aluminum based layered double hydroxides (Zn/Al LDH) have been assembled with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to prepare CMC/LDH hydrogel beads. The CMC/LDH hydrogel beads were prepared by the ionotropic gelation method. For CMC/LDH/Au preparation

Emerging mercury and methylmercury contamination from new artisanal and small-scale gold mining along the Nile Valley, Egypt.

The past decade witnessed the initiation and boom of the Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) activities in the hyper-arid southern Egypt. The ores are mined in the Eastern Desert and then transported to the densely populated farming communities in the Nile Valley, where the river provides the water resources needed for ore processing. In search for economic benefits, the poorly educated farmers with limited technical resources transformed their cultivated lands into ASGM operations, exposing themselves, their families, the residents, and the Nile ecosystems to several environmental an

Colorimetric determination of tetracyclines based on aptamer-mediated dual regulation of gold nanoparticle aggregation and in situ silver metallization.

A colorimetric assay was described for determination of tetracyclines (TCs) in complex matrices based on dual regulation of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) aggregation and in situ silver metallization. The reaction between p-aminophenol and silver ions (Ag+) catalyzed by aptamer (Apt)-functionalized AuNPs promoted the in situ deposition of Ag shells on AuNPs to afford core-shell bimetallic NPs (Au@AgNPs). When the target is present, Apt is separated from the AuNP surface through the Apt-target interaction. With the desorption of Apts, AuNPs catalyzed the formation of more aggregated Au@AgNPs with a t

Specific colorimetric detection of methylmercury based on peroxidase-like activity regulation of carbon dots/Au NPs nanozyme.

Methylmercury (MeHg+) is one of the common organic species of mercury, and has much higher toxicity than inorganic mercury. Based on the selective enhancement of the activity of nanozyme (NA-CDs/AuNPs) by MeHg+, a novel colorimetric nanoprobe for MeHg+ assay is proposed. The noradrenaline-based carbon dots (NA-CDs) as the reducing agent was applied to prepare the NA-CDs/AuNPs. The formation of gold amalgamation (Au@HgNPs) between nanozyme and MeHg+ allows to simultaneously accelerate the electron transfer from Au and Hg to NA-CDs and the generation of radicals (i.e. ∙OH, ∙O2- and ∙CH3). The NA

Icosahedral gold nanoparticles decorated with hexon protein: a surrogate for adenovirus serotype 5.

The development of synthetic particles that emulate real viruses in size, shape, and chemical composition is vital to the development of imprinted polymer-based sorbent materials (molecularly imprinted polymers, MIPs). In this study, we address surrogates for adenovirus type 5 (Adv 5) via the synthesis and subsequent modification of icosahedral gold nanoparticles (iAuNPs) decorated with the most abundant protein of the Adv 5 (i.e., hexon protein) at the surface. CTAB-capped iAuNPs with dimensions in the range of 40-90 nm were synthesized, and then CTAB was replaced by a variety of polyethylene

Bias-voltage dependent operational characteristics of a fully spectroscopic pixelated cadmium telluride detector system within an experimental benchtop x-ray fluorescence imaging setup.

Commercially available fully spectroscopic pixelated cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector systems have been adopted lately for benchtop x-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging/computed tomography (XFCT) of objects containing metal nanoprobes such as gold nanoparticles (GNPs). To date, however, some important characteristics of such detector systems under typical operating conditions of benchtop XRF/XFCT imaging systems are not well known. One important but poorly studied characteristic is the effect of detector bias-voltage on photon counting efficiency, energy resolution, and the resulting material det
