Response to intracanal medication in immature teeth with pulp necrosis: an experimental model in rat molars.

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed at developing an experimental model in rat molars for evaluating treatment strategies in necrotic immature teeth. METHODS: To define the periods to be adopted in the experimental procedures and to confirm induction of periapical lesions and interruption of root embryogenesis, the left lower first molars of 4-weeks-old Wistar rats underwent pulpectomy and were left open to the oral environment. Comparisons with the right lower first molars (vital teeth) were performed in animals with ages of 7, 10, 13, and 16 weeks. In another group of animals the teeth we

Evaluation of hand hygiene adherence in a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Although hand hygiene is the most important measure in the prevention of nosocomial infection, adherence to recommendations among health care workers (HCW) is low. Evaluation of compliance with hand hygiene was carried out in a Spanish teaching hospital. METHODS: In 2005, adherence to hand hygiene was evaluated hospital wide through direct observation, collecting data on hand hygiene carried out whenever indicated (opportunity for hand hygiene). Compliance was defined as handwashing/disinfection in an opportunity for hand hygiene according to hospital protocols. The results were a

Antiviral Activity of Olanexidine-Containing Hand Rub against Human Noroviruses.

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is the leading cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide. HuNoV transmission occurs predominantly by direct person-to-person contact, and its health burden is associated with poor hand hygiene and a lack of effective antiseptics and disinfectants. Specific therapies and methods to prevent and control HuNoV spread previously were difficult to evaluate because of the lack of a cell culture system to propagate infectious virus. This barrier has been overcome with the successful cultivation of HuNoV in nontransformed human intestinal enteroids (HIEs). H

Disinfection of wastewater by hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid: development of procedures for measurement of residual disinfectant and application to a physicochemically treated municipal effluent.

The Montreal Urban Community Wastewater Treatment Plant (MUCWTP) located in Montreal. Quebec, Canada, uses physicochemical treatment processes prior to discharging wastewater into the St. Lawrence River via an outfall tunnel of 2 hours retention time. Although chlorination facilities exist, they are not being used, and the MUCWTP is seeking alternative methods for disinfection to achieve a 2- to 3-log fecal coliform reduction. Liquid chemical disinfectants were attractive options because of their low capital costs. This led to an investigation of the feasibility of using hydrogen peroxide or p

Infection control for norovirus.

Norovirus infections are notoriously difficult to prevent and control, owing to their low infectious dose, high shedding titre, and environmental stability. The virus can spread through multiple transmission routes, of which person-to-person and foodborne are the most important. Recent advances in molecular diagnostics have helped to establish norovirus as the most common cause of sporadic gastroenteritis and the most common cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis across all ages. In this article, we review the epidemiology and virology of noroviruses, and prevention and control guidelines

Hand hygiene compliance in nursing home wards: The effects of feedback with lights on alcohol-based hand rub dispensers.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene (HH) among health care workers (HCWs) is crucial in preventing infections in nursing homes. However, HH compliance (HHC) among HCWs remains low. This study aimed to investigate the effect of feedback lights on HCWs' HHC. METHODS: A 5-month interventional study was conducted in 3 wards in a nursing home in Denmark. During the intervention period, a green light with a smiley appeared on the alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) dispensers when HCWs used the ABHR, acknowledging HCWs for using the ABHR. HHC was monitored using an automatic HH monitoring system (AHHMS). RESULTS:

Adenovirus type 8 epidemic keratoconjunctivitis in an eye clinic: risk factors and control.

Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) due to adenovirus type 8 affected 126 (7%) of 1870 ophthalmology clinic patients during an outbreak. Risk factors and mode of transmission were studied by comparing cases (n = 58) and controls (n = 200) for exposure to risk factors. Pneumotonometry (odds ratio [OR], 10.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.0-27.7), multiple clinic visits (OR, 5.9; 95% CI, 3.3-10.6), and contact with an infected physician (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.2-9.0) were significant risk factors for infection. The hands of 3 patients and 3 physicians with EKC were cultured before and after hand w

Dental vacuum system with skirt technology.

A heat-sterilizable vacuum system (Legend) featuring a skirt technology that confines the user's hand to the sterile instruments during initial hose coupling and during patient treatment is described. Because the user does not grasp the non-sterile vacuum hose connector and hose, plastic barriers and mandatory disinfection of the hose connector, hose, and instrument holders after each patient are not necessary. The vacuum system described promotes asepsis by using sterile vacuum instruments, encourages sound asepsis practice, prevents cross-contamination, and is cost-effective.

Efficient Inactivation of Monkeypox Virus by World Health Organization‒Recommended Hand Rub Formulations and Alcohols.

Increasing nonzoonotic human monkeypox virus (MPXV) infections urge reevaluation of inactivation strategies. We demonstrate efficient inactivation of MPXV by 2 World Health Organization‒recommended alcohol-based hand rub solutions. When compared with other (re)emerging enveloped viruses, MPXV displayed the greatest stability. Our results support rigorous adherence to use of alcohol-based disinfectants.

Low rates of cutaneous adverse reactions to alcohol-based hand hygiene solution during prolonged use in a large teaching hospital.

We assessed cutaneous adverse reactions (CARs) to alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) after the introduction of a hand hygiene culture change program at our institution. CARs were infrequent among exposed health care workers (HCWs) (13/2,750; 0.47%; 1 CAR per 72 years of HCW exposure) and were not influenced by the duration or intensity of ABHR use but were associated with the presence of irritant contact dermatitis.

Prevention of dryness and eczema of the hands of hospital staff by emulsion cleansing instead of washing with soap.

The acceptability of two handwashing/cleansing methods, cleansing with emulsion or washing with liquid soap and water, were compared in a randomized, prospective long-term study. Thirty-eight members of hospital staff who had a history of hand skin dryness or eczema and a need for frequent handwashing used either liquid soap or emulsion for handwashing or cleansing. The clinical assessment of skin condition was done blindly by the same dermatologist at the onset of the study, and after 2 and 4 months with a predetermined scoring system. The median skin dryness index of persons in the liquid so

Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Bacteremia, and Infection Control Interventions in a Hospital: A Six-Year Time-Series Study.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the most common healthcare-associated infections. Urine catheters are often reservoirs of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and sources of pathogens transmission to other patients. The current study was conducted to investigate the correlation between CAUTIs, MDR bacteremia, and infection control interventions, in a tertiary-care hospital in Athens, from 2013 to 2018. The following data were analyzed per month: 1. CAUTI incidence; 2. consumption of hand hygiene disinfectants; 3. incidence of isolation of MDR carrier patients, and

Evaluation of the effects of disinfectants on rotavirus RNA and infectivity by the polymerase chain reaction and cell-culture methods.

Rotaviruses have been linked to outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis of children in day-care centres and hospital paediatric wards. There is, therefore, the need for monitoring effective decontamination of such environments. We have evaluated the effects of seven different methods of disinfection/inactivation (four chemical and three physical) on rotavirus using the PCR and cell-culture methods. We observed that 6% H2O2, 2500 ppm chlorine, an ethano-phenolic disinfectant, u.v. irradiation and heat completely destroyed the infectivity of rotavirus as well as RNA amplifiable by PCR. On the other h
