The term symbrachydactyly describes syndactyly accompanied by brachydactyly. Brachydactyly is seen in middle phalanges of both hands and feet and very short in length or absent. As for syndactyly it is a cutaneous type. It has always been observed unilaterally and sporadically. A familial type of this syndrome has also been reported. There have been many classifications of symbrachydactyly. Of these, Blauth classification is the most favored one. Yet these classifications have been inadequate to include many recently discovered other forms of symbrachydactyly. A three month old child was broug

We report on a male infant with internal hydrocephalus, absence of corpus callosum, papillomas and lobulation of the tongue, notches of the alveolar ridges, short ribs, dysplastic pelvis, hypospadias, short limbs with bowed long tubular bones and postaxial polydactyly of hands, and preaxial polydactyly in one foot. Radiologically this case shares manifestations with Jeune syndrome; the tongue lobulation and the preaxial polydactyly are similar to findings in Mohr syndrome, or short-rib polydactyly syndrome (SRPS), type Majewski. In addition, a female newborn presented with manifestations of Je

The split hand/foot malformation is a developmental defect of the extremities resulting from errors in the initiation and maintenance of the apical ectodermal ridge. The phenotype is genetically heterogeneous, and it can be identified either as an isolated phenotypic manifestation or as a constituent component of a malformation syndrome. This overview describes the clinical phenotype, related animal models, and the evolving genetic heterogeneity of the malformation.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumor lacking effective therapies. We evaluated a multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor anlotinib in patients with metastatic ACC.
METHODS: From September 2018 to October 2020, nineteen patients with histologically confirmed metastatic ACC of any primary site were treated with anlotinib 12 mg orally per day at the two-week on/one-week off schedule at a single institution. Disease control rate (DCR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded.
RESULTS: The D

Focal musculoskeletal anomalies vary, and can manifest as part of a syndrome or be accompanied by numerous other conditions such as genetic disorders, karyotype abnormalities, central nervous system anomalies and other skeletal anomalies. Isolated focal musculoskeletal anomaly does, however, also occur; its early prenatal diagnosis is important in deciding prenatal care, and also helps in counseling parents about the postnatal effects of numerous possible associated anomalies. We have encountered 50 cases involving focal musculoskeletal anomalies, including focal limb dysplasia [radial ray abn

Enterovirus 71 has been associated with several outbreaks, as well as sporadic cases, of central nervous system infection and has a worldwide distribution. Seven children with encephalitis and five with aseptic meningitis caused by Enterovirus 71 were seen at Otsu Municipal Hospital during the summer of 1997. The infections were confirmed serologically, although detection of the viral genome in cerebrospinal fluid was unsuccessful. Seven children were diagnosed as having hand-foot-and-mouth syndrome, two were diagnosed as having herpangina, and three patients younger than 12 months old develop

The Freeman-Sheldon-Syndrome is a rare complex of malformations with typical deformities of face, hands and feet. The individual variability of the characteristics seems to be very big, as could see in our own patients (9 cases) as well as in literature (43 cases). The most frequent and most important characteristics are discussed, mainly the deformity of the hand. Six hands have been operated on for functional improvement; different methods were used. The primary objective of our treatment was the correction of thumb deformity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Since the description of the syndrome of the second intermetatarsal space, this is a common diagnosis among foot and ankle surgeons. However, no series have been published that consider this syndrome as its own entity. The objective of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiological results of the release of the intermetatarsal ligament and minimally invasive distal metatarsal osteotomy in patients diagnosed with second space syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, longitudinal, retrospective study was carried out in patients with a clinical diagno

Mechanic's hands is a well-characterized manifestation of select idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) syndromes. Less well characterized is the hyperkeratosis of the toes and plantar surface of the feet that can also accompany these disorders. We aim to describe common pedal signs in the context of IIM, and suggest that it may be another key feature in the presentation of these syndromes. A cohort of 2145 myositis patient charts gathered since 2003 were retrospectively reviewed using the key search terms "mechanic's feet" and/or "mechanic's foot." Charts that included either phrase were furt

Viral and paraviral exanthems are the most common exanthems in children and are often the reason for a medical evaluation, especially in pediatric primary care and emergency rooms. Familiarity with the various eruptions is important for early diagnosis and patient management as well as minimizing the risk of infection. In this review, we present the newly described entities reactive infectious mucocutaneous eruptions (RIME) and the pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS). In addition, atypical manifestations of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome and hand, foot, and mouth disease are discussed

Acute immune system-mediated neuropathy, referred to as Guillain-Barré syndrome, is a common etiology of acutely acquired weakness that often presents with proximally spreading initial distal extremity weakness and paralysis. Less common manifestations include delayed facial nerve palsy and weakness, occurring in approximately 15% of patients. This case report highlights a rarer initial presentation of Guillain-Barré syndrome in a 43-year-old man initially presenting with unilateral upper facial weakness whose symptoms progressed to bilateral hand and foot numbness over a 2-week period.

PURPOSE: Radial ray deficiencies are characterized by unilateral or bilateral absence of varying portions of the radius and thumb. Both isolated and syndromic forms have been described, and although for some of the syndromes the causal gene has been identified, many patients remain without a genetic diagnosis.
METHODS: In this study, a cohort of 54 patients with radial ray deficiencies was screened for genomic aberrations by molecular karyotyping.
RESULTS: In 8 of 54 cases, an aberration was detected. Two unrelated patients inherited a 1q21.1 microduplication from a healthy parent, whereas i

We present a male child with digital and radiographic findings consistent with brachydactyly type B. His left hand had 2-4 syndactyly, shortened first and fifth digits and single palmar and fifth finger flexion creases. The nail on the second finger was hypoplastic. The right hand had a small thumb and curving of the second finger towards the midline. The left foot had a short left hallux with an absent nail, 2-4 syndactyly and an absent toe. His right foot had a short, dorsiflexed hallux with a hypoplastic nail, 2-3 syndactyly and an overlapping toe. Radiographs showed asymmetrical hypoplasia

PURPOSE: To propose a classification system for type A ulnar polydactyly based on radiographic findings and characterize the demographic features of patients with these deformities.
METHODS: We identified 49 patients with type A ulnar polydactyly of the hand who were seen in our institution over 20 years. Patients' medical records and radiographs were retrospectively reviewed and used to distinguish morphological subtypes.
RESULTS: Ninety-six percent of the deformities (64/67) were allocated to 1 of the 5 subgroups of our suggested classification, and the type that originated from the metaca

Werner syndrome (WS), also known as adult progeria, is characterized by accelerated aging symptoms from a young age. Patients with WS experience painful intractable skin ulcers with calcifications in their extremities, subcutaneous lipoatrophy, and sarcopenia. However, there is no significant abnormality in the trunk skin, where the subcutaneous fat relatively accumulates. The cause of such differences between the limbs and trunk is unknown. To investigate the underlying mechanism behind these phenomena, we established and analyzed dermal fibroblasts from the foot and trunk of two WS patients.

Palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE, hand-foot syndrome) is a relatively frequent cutaneous toxicity related to antineoplastic treatment with e.g. fluorouracil, capecitabine, and liposomal doxorubicin. It usually presents as paresthesia and painful erythema of the palms and soles and may lead to ulceration of the skin. The symptoms are dose-dependent, and the condition may be dose-limiting. Two cases of chemotherapy-associated PPE are presented.

Apert syndrome - acrocephalosyndactyly - is a rare autosomal dominant disorder representing 1:65 000 cases of living newborns. Characteristic malformations of the Apert syndrome are early craniostenosis, microviscerocranium and II-V finger syndactyly of hand and toes with proximal phalanx of the bilateral thumb "in delta". It is difficult to determine prenatal diagnosis in the second quarter, when examining the morphology of fetal signs; the dysmorphism signs appeared in the third pregnancy quarter. We present here the case of a newborn with Apert syndrome that was born prematurely in our Clin

From the literature we found reports of 105 patients whom we judged had a triangular deformity of one of the bones of the hand or foot. We found 49 patients of our own with 84 delta-shaped phalanges limited strictly to the hand. This represents an incidence of 3.5% of our congenital abnormalities of the upper extremity. The deformity is associated with many abnormalities: syndactyly, polydactyly, symphalangism, triphalangeal thumb, cleft hand, and hypoplastic hand are the most frequent Triangular deformity of the bone of the index finger usually is associated with Apert's syndrome.
