In the past 13 years, 24 cases of anisakiasis have been reported in the United States. Of these, 14 were infections by Phocanema sp. and found in California and Alaska, and most were of the tissue non-invasive type. The remaining 10 cases were infections by larvae of anisakis type I (L3 and L4). Of these 10 cases, 4 were found on the west coast, 5 were on the east coast and one was in Hawaii. In 3 of the 10 cases, the parasite invaded the digestive tract. Caucasian women in Hawaii have a higher risk for breast cancer than women of Japanese ancestry. In order to determine to what extent known risk factors account for the difference in risk between the two groups, a case-control study was done from 1975 to 1980. A total of 183 Japanese and 161 Caucasian breast cancer cases were interviewed along with their respective controls. There remains a dearth of research exploring historical trauma and substance use among Native Hawaiians. The lychee erinose mite (LEM), Aceria litchii (Keifer) is a serious pest of lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.). LEM causes a type of gall called 'erineum' (abnormal felty growth of trichomes from the epidermis), where it feeds, reproduces and protects itself from biotic and abiotic adversities. On November 19, 2004, a possible flood-related leptospirosis case (Patient 1) was reported to the Hawaii State Department of Health (HDOH). Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a possible cause of Kawasaki syndrome (KS), is not pathenogenically associated with KS in Hawaii. The prevalence of EBV capsid antibody in KS patients was found not to differ significantly from that in controls, and the antibody response in those infected with EBV was the same as that in other children similarly infected. This prospective study assesses the impact of fat and calcium intake on the risk of developing cancer in each large-bowel subsite. The study population is a cohort of Hawaii Japanese men who experience high rates of colon cancer, especially of the sigmoid segment. Total calcium intake is not related to the risk of colon cancer, and separation of calcium into dairy and nondairy sources does not alter the result.
