Cost-effectiveness analysis of mammography screening for early detection of breast cancer in Nigeria.

Mammography still remains the gold standard for breast cancer screening, considering its impact on breast cancer mortality. However, it has a relatively low utilization rate in Nigeria. Although the National Strategic Cancer Control Plan (NSCCP) has a goal of making screening services and early detection of cancer available for all Nigerians, there is currently no national breast cancer screening program implemented in Nigeria. The modelling study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of mammography screening from the healthcare provider's perspective and to determine the appropriate screen

Closing the gap? Results-based financing and socio-economic-related inequalities in maternal health outcomes in Zimbabwe.

The results-based financing (RBF) programme, first implemented in Zimbabwe in 2011 and gradually expanded to other districts, aimed to address disparities in maternal health outcomes by improving the utilization of health services. This study leverages the staggered rollout of the programme as a quasi-experimental design to assess its impact on asset wealth-related inequalities in selected maternal health outcomes. The objective is to determine whether RBF can effectively reduce these disparities and promote equitable healthcare access. We employ an extended two-way fixed effects (ETWFE) model

Barriers to access to visceral leishmaniasis diagnosis and care among seasonal mobile workers in Western Tigray, Northern Ethiopia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia bears a high burden of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Early access to VL diagnosis and care improves clinical prognosis and reduces transmission from infected humans; however, significant obstacles exist. The approximate 250,000 seasonal mobile workers (MW) employed annually in northwestern Ethiopia may be particularly disadvantaged and at risk of VL acquisition and death. Our study aimed to assess barriers, and recommend interventions to increase access, to VL diagnosis and care among MWs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In 2017, 50 interviews and 11 focus group discussion

Assessing Preoperative Risk Factors With Sex Disparities in Total Joint Arthroplasty Patients and Financial Outcomes From the National Inpatient Sample Database.

INTRODUCTION: Disparities in the healthcare system imply potential risks for vulnerable groups whose needs are not appropriately met. Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is successful in treating end-stage arthritis, resulting in increased demand for the procedure, however remains underused in both sexes, especially in women. Although multiple studies assessed the differences in postoperative morbidities between sexes, there remains a lack in understanding patients' preoperative clinical profile and nonclinical demographics. The aim of this study is to provide a population-based epidemiologic asses

The financial impact of unrepaired cleft lip and palate in the Philippines.

OBJECTIVES: There are over 96 million people in the Philippines. Close to 77 thousand persons in this country have orofacial clefting. We estimate nearly 64 thousand are unrepaired. Unemployment and underemployment because of the communication disorders associated with unrepaired clefts will affect family income and hence tax revenues. The purpose of this study is to understand the financial impact of unrepaired cleft lip and/or palate on families and identify how that would translate to the Philippine government in tax revenues. METHODS: The incidence of orofacial cleft in the Philippines wa

The 4MOTHERS trial of the impact of a mobile money-based intervention on maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Madagascar: study protocol of a cluster-randomized hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Mobile money-a service enabling users to receive, store, and send electronic money using mobile phones-has been widely adopted across low- and middle-income economies to pay for a variety of services, including healthcare. However, evidence on its effects on healthcare access and health outcomes are scarce and the possible implications of using mobile money for financing and payment of maternal healthcare services-which generally require large one-time out-of-pocket payments-have not yet been systematically assessed in low-resource settings. The aim of this study is to determine th

Stakeholder Roles and Views in the Implementation of the Differentiated HIV Treatment Service Delivery Model Among Female Sex Workers in Gauteng Province, South Africa.

Background: Key populations (KPs), particularly female sex workers (FSWs), continue to face significant barriers in accessing HIV-related healthcare services in South Africa. Structural challenges have historically hindered equitable HIV treatment access, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Overburdened clinics, staff shortages, and travel constraints disrupted HIV services and ART adherence. In response, the Differentiated Service Delivery (DSD) model was rapidly scaled up to decentralise care and improve treatment continuity. Objective: To solicit the views of stakeholders regarding their int

Between opportunity and equity: navigating medical tourism in Türkiye's public hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Medical tourism has been proposed as a potential means of using available capacity in public hospitals, generating additional revenue, and supporting healthcare investment. However, public-sector participation also raises concerns regarding organizational readiness, resource allocation, and equitable access for local patients. Türkiye, with its extensive healthcare infrastructure and cost advantages, has become an important medical tourism destination where both public and private hospitals provide services to international patients. This study explored institutional stakeholders'
