Telomere attrition in lens epithelial cells - a target for N-acetylcarnosine therapy.

Thyroid hormone disorders are both congenital as well as acquired. According to a projection from several studies on thyroid diseases, it has been estimated that about 42 million people in India suffer from various kind of thyroid diseases (1) Thyroid hormone is closely associated with the development of the cognitive functions, thus deficiency of this hormone is said to have effect an overall impact on proper functioning of the body. The normal functioning of the thyroid gland and adequate levels in the blood are Needed for the formation and functioning of the middle ear, inner ear and the ce

Methadone-induced bilateral severe sensorineural hearing loss.

Methadone, a long-acting opiate agonist, and naltrexone, an opiate receptor antagonist, are both commonly used to treat patients with morphine and heroin addiction. We present a rare case of methadone-induced persistent bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) after chronic naltrexone use and review opioid-induced hearing loss in the literature. Methadone-induced hearing loss has been described previously described in the literature with all reported cases recovering functional hearing. This is the first description of persistent bilateral severe SNHL following methadone ingestion. We propo

When is a conductive hearing loss not a conductive hearing loss? Causes of a mismatch in air-bone threshold measurements or a "pseudoconductive" hearing loss.

The otolaryngologist is sometimes faced with a patient with an apparent conductive hearing loss on audiometric testing who appears to have normal and mobile middle ear structures on ear exploration. Some causes of these "pseudoconductive" hearing losses can be diagnosed without resorting to surgery. This article reviews several possible mechanisms for this condition with diagnostic procedures to distinguish etiologic diseases. Conditions discussed include poor audiometry, functional hearing losses, "third window" causes, obliterated round window, abnormal inner ear connection with the cerebros

Perceived Hypoacusis and Loneliness: A Longitudinal Between- and Within-Individual Association in Mexican Older Adults.

Hearing loss is highly prevalent among older adults and is associated with negative psychosocial outcomes such as loneliness. Loneliness is a major public health concern due to its links with functional decline, morbidity, and mortality. While international studies have identified associations between hearing loss and loneliness, few examine this relationship longitudinally, particularly in Latin America. Furthermore, little is known about whether these associations arise from structural differences between individuals or from changes within the same individual over time. We conducted a longit

Active middle ear implants: Vibroplasty™ in children and adolescents with acquired or congenital middle ear disorders.

CONCLUSION: Active middle ear implant (AMEI) implantation in children and adolescents is safe and provides improved hearing results. No statistical difference in hearing outcomes was shown in the group of patients affected by chronic middle ear diseases versus aural atresia. Also, the transducer location (round window versus oval window placement) did not lead to different outcomes in hearing abilities. OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the hearing outcomes with the active implant Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) in children and adolescents. (2) To evaluate whether functional results of the subjects in the

Hearing loss and cognitive decline in the general population: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies identifying hearing loss as a promising modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline mostly adjusted for baseline age solely. As such a faster cognitive decline at a higher age, which is expected considering the non-linear relationship between cognition and age, may have been overlooked. Therefore it remains uncertain whether effects of hearing loss on cognitive decline extend beyond age-related declines of cognitive function. METHODS: 3,590 non-demented participants were eligible for analysis at baseline, and a maximum of 837 participants were eligible for the lo

Management of Functional Hearing Difficulties Using Low-Gain Amplification: Case Reports on Auditory Processing Evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Functional hearing difficulties are common among both the civilian population and military personnel with hearing thresholds less than 25 dB HL, particularly those exposed to blasts or with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs). These individuals often report significant hearing challenges in noisy environments, despite "normal" audiometric thresholds. Low-gain hearing aids (LGHAs) have emerged as a promising intervention for managing these difficulties. PURPOSE: Describe the decision-making process for identifying a candidate for LGHAs and evaluate the outcomes. RESEARCH DESIGN:

Contralateral routing of signals in unilateral hearing impairment. A better method of fitting.

Unilaterally severely hearing impaired persons, who may experience substantial communication problems in situations of high acoustic demands, would in theory benefit from contralateral routing of signals (CROS). However, reports of failure because of too much disturbing noise and distortion have been common. The reason for a low success rate in CROS, though, is an inappropriate fitting procedure, due to lack of understanding of the basic principle of CROS among both patients and audiologists. The precondition for success in CROS is an accurate description of the individual hearing deficit and

The impact of hearing loss on tone discrimination: An fMRI study.

Hearing deprivation induces structural and functional reorganization in the brain, which compromises an individual's language processing capacity. As a tonal language, Mandarin Chinese requires fine-grained auditory processing for lexical tone discrimination. Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms through which hearing loss influences this process remain poorly understood. This study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine behavioral performance and neural activation patterns during Mandarin tone discrimination tasks in individuals with early-onset deafness. Participants

Hearing Loss in Mucopolysaccharidoses: Current Knowledge and Future Directions.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of lysosomal storage disorders caused by a deficiency of one of the enzymes involved in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans. Hearing loss is a common clinical presentation in MPS. This paper reviews the literature on hearing loss for each of the seven recognized subtypes of MPS. Hearing loss was found to be common in MPS I, II, III, IVA, VI, and VII, and absent from MPS IVB and MPS IX. MPS VI presents primarily with conductive hearing loss, while the other subtypes (MPS I, MPS II, MPS III, MPS IVA, and MPS VII) can present with any type of hearing loss

Mitochondrial mutations associated with aminoglycoside ototoxicity and hearing loss susceptibility identified by meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Genetic variations, including mitochondrial mutations, are important contributors to hearing loss, especially in children, and newborn genetic screens for hearing loss mutations are becoming increasingly common. Mitochondrial mutations have been linked with ototoxic responses to common antibiotics, therefore understanding the association of these mutations with hearing loss is of special importance. To address the usefulness of screening for these mutations in a clinical setting, we formed a collaboration of clinicians and geneticists to analyse the association of mitochondrial mut

Recoverable hearing loss with amphetamines and other drugs.

Prolonged and sustained consumption of alcohol, heroin and volatiles had been reported to impair hearing. Amphetamine related hearing loss is clinically different from the hearing loss seen with other agents. It seems that illicit drug use could result in two clinically different types of hearing losses. In May and June of 2001, 183 men aged 18 and above who met DSM-IV criteria for substance dependence were studied in a hospital in Saudia Arabia. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the prevalence of amphetamine-related recoverable hearing loss, establish whether similar hearing loss also

Hearing loss and gait speed among older adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that hearing loss, which is highly prevalent but undertreated in older adults, may be associated with gait and physical functioning. Determining if hearing loss is independently associated with gait speed is critical toward understanding whether hearing rehabilitative interventions could help mitigate declines in physical functioning in older adults. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from the 1999 to 2002 cycles of the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey during which participants 50-69 years (n=1180) underwent hearing and gait

Functional connectivity alteration of the deprived auditory regions with cognitive networks in deaf and inattentive adolescents.

Adolescents with early profound deafness may present with distractibility and inattentiveness. The brain mechanisms underlying these attention impairments remain unclear. We performed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the functional connectivity of the superior temporal and transverse temporal gyri in 25 inattentive adolescents with bilateral prelingual profound deafness, and compared the results with those of 27 age-matched normal controls. Pearson and Spearman's rho correlation analyses were used to investigate the correlations of altered functional connectiv

Effects of early hearing deficits on olivocochlear efferent neuron morphology in mice.

One of the fundamental features of age-related hearing loss is difficulty discriminating signals in the presence of background noise, a functional deficit that may be related to the loss of auditory efferent neurons. We hypothesize that the central degeneration of olivocochlear (OC) efferent neurons results from prolonged lack of afferent input. We investigated the time-course of central degeneration of medial (MOC) and lateral (LOC) OC efferent neurons in genetic mouse models that exhibit hearing loss during development. Tests to verify cochlear function were combined with anatomical and morp

Neural circuits and behavioral pathways linking hearing loss to affective dysregulation in older adults.

Substantial evidence now links age-related hearing loss to incident major depressive disorder in older adults. However, research examining the neural circuits and behavioral mechanisms by which age-related hearing loss leads to depression is at an early phase. It is known that hearing loss has adverse structural and functional brain consequences, is associated with reduced social engagement and loneliness, and often results in tinnitus, which can independently affect cognitive control and emotion processing circuits. While pathways leading from these sequelae of hearing loss to affective dysre

Hearing impairment as a determinant of function in the elderly.

This clinical, practice-based study explores the research question: Is there a relationship between hearing loss and functional disturbance in elderly patients? We analyzed the impact of hearing impairment on 153 patients over 65 years of age screened in primary care practice. Functional and psychosocial impairment were measured using the Sickness Impact Profile (SIP), a standardized measure for assessing sickness related dysfunction. Hearing level was determined with pure tone audiometry. Multiple linear regression was used to adjust for patient case-mix differences and other clinical variabl

Application of metabolomics to acquired hearing loss: Advances and systematic review.

Hearing loss poses a significant global public health challenge, seriously jeopardizing both physical and mental health. As an emerging omics technique, metabolomics reflects the metabolic state influenced by both genetic and environmental factors and has been increasingly applied to hearing loss research. This review summarizes the latest advances in metabolomics applied to several types of acquired hearing loss, including age-related hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, and sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Through the identification and functional enrichment of differentially expresse

Gene therapy for sensorineural hearing loss.

Gene therapy is a promising treatment modality that is being explored for several inherited disorders. Multiple human gene therapy clinical trials are currently ongoing, but few are directed at hearing loss. Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent sensory disabilities in the world, and genetics play an important role in the pathophysiology of hearing loss. Gene therapy offers the possibility of restoring hearing by overcoming the functional deficits created by the underlying genetic mutations. In addition, gene therapy could potentially be used to induce hair cell regeneration by delivering
