INTRODUCTION: Primary hepatic sarcomas are uncommon malignant neoplasms; prognostic features, natural history, and optimal management of these tumors are not well characterized.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: This report describes the management of a 51-year-old patient that underwent a right trisectionectomy for a large hepatic mass found to be a liver sarcoma on pathology. He subsequently developed tumor emboli to his lungs and was discovered to have cardiac intracavitary metastases from his primary tumor. The patient underwent cardiopulmonary bypass and resection of the right-sided heart metastases

The unknown but presumably reduced life expectancy of patients with malignant neoplasms may dissuade surgeons from performing necessary coronary and valvular heart operations. There is also concern for recrudescence of cancer as a result of an impaired immune system after cardiopulmonary bypass. We analyzed the records of 2,190 patients who underwent cardiac operations requiring extracorporeal circulation between 1988 and 1990. Of these, 46 patients had previously been treated for malignancy other than nonmelanoma skin cancer. Open heart operations were performed in patients with cardiac sympt

Primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL), defined as extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma involving exclusively the heart and∕or pericardium, is a neoplasm with an extremely low incidence, a high degree of malignancy, and a poor prognosis. It comprises 0.5% of all extranodal lymphomas and 1-2% of all primary cardiac tumors, while the most commonly reported subtype is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The tumor is more common in immunocompromised patients compared with those who are immunocompetent. Modern imaging methods now allow for earlier detection of these tumors, despite their variable clinical

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Extramedullary intracardiac plasmacytoma is a rare type of plasma cell neoplasm that involves the heart. This article presents a case report of a patient with this condition and describes the surgical management of the disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 65-year-old male with a history of multiple myeloma in remission for two years who presented with shortness of breath and chest pain. Imaging studies revealed a mass in the right atrium of the heart, which was confirmed to be extramedullary intracardiac plasmacytoma on biopsy. The patient underwent surgi

We describe the case of a 32-year-old man who developed a liver neoplasm due to previous Fontan surgery (FS) for a single ventricle anomaly and situs viscerum inversus. He was admitted to our hospital for suspected hepatocellular carcinoma during an Ultrasound (US) follow up. Computed tomography (CT) showed features of chronic liver disease and 7 cm hepatic nodule with arterial enhancement. Laboratory analyses documented preserved liver function and increased levels of alpha-fetoprotein. Trans-arterial-chemoembolization (TACE) was performed obtaining complete necrosis at 4 weeks of follow up a

We report the presentation, workup, and pre/perinatal management of a fetus with a large congenital hemangioma of the face. Hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms frequently encountered in neonates and infants. The less common congenital variant develops in utero and can present on prenatal ultrasound with diagnostic uncertainty as well as clinical implications for delivery. The differential diagnosis for these solid vascular masses when located in the head and neck includes myofibroma, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, teratoma, and encephalocele. Potential clinical issues relate to size an

Primary cardiac neoplasms are rare and are usually benign myxomas and rhabdomyomas. Cardiac leiomyomas are usually seen as a part of the spectrum of intravenous leiomyomatosis or benign metastasizing leiomyoma. De novo occurrence of primary intracardiac leiomyomas (PICL) is a rarity. Herein we describe a 14-year-old boy presenting with intermittent dyspnea for 2 years, with a large right ventricular mass suggestive of myxoma on transthoracic echocardiography, without any extracardiac lesions. Histology and immunohistochemistry of the tumor excised under cardiopulmonary bypass confirmed a PICL

Cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare, malignant neoplasm affecting the heart. We present the clinical history of a 40-year-old patient diagnosed with metastatic angiosarcoma of the heart. The patient complained of shortness of breath, and a cardiac computed tomography scan revealed a mass in the right atrium and pericardial effusion. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography provided detailed anatomical and functional information, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography were used to assess distant metastasis and characte

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by hamartomatous tumors involving multiple organs such as the brain, skin, heart, lung and kidney. TSC is caused by inactivating mutations in TSC1/TSC2, which encodes hamartin and tuberin, respectively, and forms a complex that regulates mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), resulting in cell overgrowth and oncogenesis. Since a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in TSC relates to chronic kidney disease and the ability to preserve renal function, this review describes the important pathol

The recommendations of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), released in 2015, provide limited data on the management of elderly patients with pericarditis. Elderly people are more likely to have pericarditis risk factors such as malignant neoplasms or renal failure. Difficulties in diagnosing pericardial diseases may occur in a group of elderly patients with concomitant coronary heart disease and the development of acute myocardial infarction. In the treatment of pericarditis in elderly patients, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, preferably aspirin, are primarily used. Elderly people

The mediastinum is an anatomically defined space in which organs and major blood vessels reside with surrounding soft tissue elements. The thymus is an important organ in the mediastinum, and many of the masses encountered in the mediastinum are related to this organ. Most neoplasms diagnosed in the mediastinum are epithelial tumours (thymomas and thymic carcinomas), lymphomas or germ cell tumours. In contrast, soft tissue tumours of the mediastinum are rare. In 1963, Pachter and Lattes systematically reviewed soft tissue pathology of the mediastinum, covering the hitherto described [2, 226, 2

The fibrosing disorders represent a diverse group of uncommon chronic diseases that include systemic sclerosis, eosinophilic fasciitis, eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome, toxic oil syndrome, and localized forms of fibrosis. A rare case of eosinophilic fasciitis is reported. The patient was a 61-year-old female who presented with generalized massive edema and eosinophilia. Signs of common edema-producing diseases, such as heart failure, were absent. Corticosteroids were initiated with slow improvement in edema. Over the ensuing months, miliary tuberculosis and tenosynovitis of her left hand and lef

Transthoracic ultrasound (US) of the chest is useful in the evaluation of a wide range of peripheral parenchymal, pleural, and chest wall diseases. Furthermore, it is increasingly used to guide interventional procedures of the chest and pleural space. The technique lends itself to bedside use in the intensive care unit, where suboptimal radiography may mask or mimic clinically significant abnormalities. The authors discuss the uses, techniques and applications of US of the chest. The sonographic appearances of pleural diseases (pleural effusion, pneumothorax, pleural mass, and mesothelioma), p

A 57-year-old black female presented with a 1-month of right-sided congestive heart failure and clinical evidence of pulmonic and tricuspid valvular stenosis and insufficiency. The echocardiographic examination and ventriculography demonstrated a large right atrial tumor interfering with the function of both right-sided valves. The patient underwent successful surgical resection of the tumor. Histologically, the tumor had cellular areas typical of myxoma, as well as glandular areas, a feature which has been described very rarely in this lesion. Electron microscopy of the glandular zones, which

The aim of our study was to determine the different characteristics of infective endocarditis in children without underlying heart disease. This was a descriptive, retrospective study including all cases of infective endocarditis without underlying heart disease occurring in children under 18 years of age, hospitalized at the Timone Children's Hospital in Marseille, France, between 1997 and 2008. The clinical, microbiological, and echocardiography data; treatment; and outcome were reviewed for each case. Over an 11-year period, 26 children were hospitalized with infective endocarditis. Eleven

Lymphosarcoma, a common canine hematopoietic neoplasm, occurs in multicentric, alimentary, mediastinal, and extranodal forms. Alimentary lymphoma accounts for approximately 5% of cases and is less easily diagnosed than the more common multicentric form. Chemotherapy is often effective, but recent therapeutic advances hold great promise for success in treating canine lymphoma. A 4-year-old, black Labrador retriever was presented (day 1) with a 2-day history of vomiting, polyuria/polydipsia, lethargy, and anorexia. The heart and respiratory rates were within normal limits, and the rectal tempera

A juvenile female loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) stranded in Gran Canaria was submitted for necropsy. The turtle had exhibited anorexia and lethargy for 2 weeks prior to its death. At necropsy, the thymus was enlarged by two white and firm nodules. White nodules similar to those in thymus were observed in the plastron, thyroid gland, heart, aorta, left lung, spleen, liver, kidneys, stomach, and small intestine. Histopathology revealed a neoplastic proliferation of round cells identified as lymphoid cells. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells were consistent with lymphoblastic cells

BACKGROUND: Chorioangioma is a vascular neoplasm of the placenta with the potential to cause heart failure, hydrops, and even death.
CASE: A 30-year-old patient was referred owing to a large placental chorioangioma and fetal hydrops at 28 weeks of gestation. The patient underwent ultrasound-guided interstitial laser ablation. Ten days later, fetal blood transfusion was performed and at 31 weeks of gestation, and the patient delivered a female infant by cesarean section. The newborn was discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit without any complication.
CONCLUSION: According to our cas

A 66-year-old woman was referred for a bone scan to assess back pain on a background of breast cancer, melanoma, and rheumatic heart disease. The scan appearance was suspicious for a localized soft tissue neoplasm. An FDG coincidence positron emission tomography (PET) study demonstrated a large FDG-avid soft tissue abnormality. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from a subsequent needle biopsy. This case illustrates the use of FDG-PET in infection imaging, as well as demonstrating the potential pitfalls in nuclear oncology. Because FDG is not tumor-specific, accumulation in benign lesions may

Angiomyolipoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that typically occurs in the kidney sporadically or in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. Extrarenal angiomyolipomas are uncommon, and the liver is the most common extrarenal site. Other sites reported include the bone, colon, heart, lung, parotid gland, skin, spermatic cord, gynecologic regions, and retroperitoneum. A case of an angiomyolipoma involving the right adrenal gland in a 49-year-old female patient with tuberous sclerosis is reported. The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features are also discussed. Only 2 cases describing adrena
