A multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of the leafhopper subfamily Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) challenges the traditional view of the evolution of wing venation.

Genera of the diverse leafhopper subfamily Typhlocybinae have traditionally been classified into tribes primarily based on characters of the wing venation and an intuitive phylogeny of this group was previously proposed based on the hypothetical pattern of wing vein evolution. Some recent authors suggested that wing vein characters are not always reliable but few attempts have been made to examine the status and relationships of typhlocybine tribes using rigorous phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis of a dataset comprising DNA sequences from five gene regions (H3, H2A, 28S rDNA D2, 16S

First report of the occurrence of Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Liviidae), an invasive species in Nigeria, West Africa.

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP; Diaphorina citri) is the vector of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) that is associated with the devastating Huanglongbing (HLB; citrus greening disease). This pest of Asian origin has spread into the Americas and more recently into a few countries in East Africa. During recent surveys, suspect ACP adults and nymphs were recorded for the first time infesting citrus trees in southwest Nigeria. Morphological identification and DNA barcoding confirmed the samples to be D. citri. Analysis of the obtained sequences revealed that the ACP recorded in Nigeria clus

Identification of the sex pheromone of the invasive scale Acutaspis albopicta (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), arriving in California on shipments of avocados from Mexico.

As a result of relaxation of importation restrictions ordered by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shipments of fresh avocados from Mexico began entering California year-round in 2007, despite the fact that these shipments were heavily infested with a number of exotic and potentially invasive armored scale species that are not thought to be present in California. Here, we report the identification of the sex pheromone of one of these species, Acutaspis albopicta (Cockerell), from a quarantine colony of these insects initiated from specimens c

Evaluation of RbCl and CrCl₃ as markers of Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) nymphs: persistence and influence of Rb and Cr on triatomine biology.

In order to mark Triatoma brasiliensis, the vector of Chagas disease in Brazil, two chemical compounds, rubidium chloride (RbCl) and chromium chloride (CrCl₃), were tested. First, 199 N2-N5 nymphs were fed on blood with 0.025M RbCl. Rb marker positivity ranged from 2.5% (N3)-70% (N2), with a maximum persistence of 98 days. Second, 265 N2-N5 nymphs were fed on blood containing 0.0015M CrCl₃. Cr marker positivity ranged up to 93% (N5), with a maximum persistence of 119 days. Finally, we blood fed 213 T. brasiliensis to investigate whether CrCl₃ altered the biology of this insect. The development

Effects of life stages and feeding regimes on active movement behavior of the tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

This study examined the effects of different life stages (first, second, third, fourth, and five instars; adult females and adult males) and feeding regimes (starved and blood fed) on the active movement activity of the tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (F.), under mixed-stage conditions. We used an extended arena made from Tygon tube coils and observed the movement frequency and movement distance at selected time intervals up to 120 h. The fifth instars and adult males and females showed significantly (P < 0.01) greater movement frequency compared with the other stages. The first and second

Triapsin, an unusual activatable serine protease from the saliva of the hematophagous vector of Chagas' disease Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Salivary anticoagulant activities are widely distributed among hematophagous arthropods. Most of them are inhibitors of the serine proteases of the coagulation cascade. Here we show that the saliva of the exclusively hematophagous insect Triatoma infestans, an important vector in the transmission of Chagas' disease, contains an uncommon trypsin-like activity, triapsin. This novel enzyme was purified and characterized. It is a serine protease that is stored as a zymogen in the luminal content of the salivary glands D2. Triapsin is activated by trypsin treatment, or when the saliva is ejected du

A century of passive surveillance reveals widespread triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) across North Carolina, including detection of the Chagas disease parasite.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasitic protozoan that causes Chagas disease, can be transmitted via bite wound contamination with feces from triatomines ("kissing bugs," Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae). Often thought of as restricted to Central and South America, kissing bugs live throughout North America, including North Carolina and other southern regions of the United States. In this assessment of kissing bugs in North Carolina, data were gathered from clinic samples and public submissions to online and university collections. Climate data were obtained through the National Oceanic and Atmosp

Acanthidiellum Kirkaldy, 1904 a valid substitute name for the preoccupied Acanthidium Montrouzier, 1858 and Polycarmes Stl, 1868 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae).

The generic name Polycarmes Stl, 1868, currently used as a valid name for two species of Pentatomidae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomomorpha: Pentatomoidea) from New Caledonia, is actually a junior homonym of Polycarmes Gistel, 1834 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). The substitute name for it is its only valid junior synonym, Acanthidiellum Kirkaldy, 1904, originally proposed as a new replacement name for Acanthidium Montrouzier, 1858 preoccupied by Acanthidium Lowe, 1839 (Chondrichthyes). The following two new combinations are proposed: Acanthidiellum armigerum (Montrouzier, 1858) comb.

Biospectroscopy Combined with Multivariate Analysis as Tools for Identifying Trypanosoma cruzi Discrete Typing Units in Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

Epidemiological surveillance of Chagas disease with determination of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) positivity and genotyping is important for the adoption of control measures. The association of biospectroscopy with chemometric models can be used as an alternative tool to determine T. cruzi positivity and genotyping directly on the insect, with laser incidence, without damage to the insects, and without parasite isolation and growing. In this study, infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) combined with classification and authentication models was used for the identification of the experimental infecti

Migration and Gene Flow Among Domestic Populations of the Chagas Insect Vector Triatoma dimidiata (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Detected by Microsatellite Loci.

Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811) is the most abundant and significant insect vector of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi in Central America, and particularly in Guatemala. Tr. cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, and successful disease control requires understanding the geographic distribution and degree of migration of vectors such as T. dimidiata that frequently re-infest houses within months following insecticide application. The population genetic structure of T. dimidiata collected from six villages in southern Guatemala was studied to gain insight into the migration patterns

Evaluation of efficacy of 18 strains of entomopathogenic nematodes (Rhabditida) against Planococcus citri (Risso, 1813) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) under laboratory conditions.

Planococcus citri (Risso, 1813) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is an important plant virus vector in grapevine crops in Brazil and other countries. The mealybug grows in roots and leaves of the grapes. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are efficient control agents against insects associated to the soil and could be applied with the same equipment used for chemical insecticides. The aim of this study was to select effective EPNs for controlling P. citri females in laboratory conditions (25±1°C, UR 60±10%). We tested 17 native [Steinernema rarum (6 strains), Steinernema glaseri, Steinernema feltiae

Monitoring of insecticide resistance and transcriptomic analysis of detoxification gene expression in field populations of Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) in China.

Diaphorina citri is one of the most destructive pests to global citrus production. Chemical control through insecticide application has traditionally served as the primary intervention strategy for suppressing D. citri populations. However, recent field observations from China have indicated diminishing control efficacy, suggesting potential resistance development. This study assessed insecticide resistance in 10 D. citri field populations from major citrus-producing provinces across the Guangxi-Hunan-Jiangxi region and characterized transcriptomic changes. Bioassays against 6 insecticides rev

Morphology of the male reproductive system and spermatozoa of Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stål, 1854) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) with evidence of a spermatostyle in the sperm conjugation.

Changes in harvesting methods in the early 1990s led to Mahanarva fimbriolata becoming the most prevalent pest in sugarcane plantations. Encouraged by the scarcity of research on the reproductive system and spermatology of Auchenorrhyncha, we provide a detailed description of the male reproductive system and spermatozoa of this cercopid. This will not only aid in taxonomic purposes but also help in understanding the reproductive biology of the species. The male reproductive system, spermatozoa, and sperm bundles of M. fimbriolata were investigated using light microscopy. Our results reveal a r

Drivers of molecular and morphometric variation in Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Triatominae): the resolution of geometric morphometrics for populational structuring on a microgeographical scale.

BACKGROUND: The protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi circulates in semiarid areas of northeastern Brazil in distinct ecotopes (sylvatic, peridomestic and domestic) where Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva, 1911 is the most important Chagas disease vector. In this study, we analyzed microevolutionary and demographic aspects of T. brasiliensis populations at the ecotypic, micro and macro-geographic scales by combining morphometrics and molecular results. Additionally, we aimed to address the resolution of both markers for delimiting populations in distinct scales. METHODS: We sampled populations of T. brasilie

Comparison of phenol-chloroform and a commercial deoxyribonucleic acid extraction kit for identification of bloodmeal sources from triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of triatomine bloodmeal sources is essential for understanding vector-host interactions in Trypanosoma cruzi transmission cycles. Expensive commercial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction kits are widely used for bloodmeal identification. This study assessed the performance of an inexpensive phenol-chloroform DNA extraction protocol for identification of triatomine bloodmeal sources, comparing it with a commercially available kit. METHODS: Both methods were used to obtain DNA from the intestinal contents of Triatoma brasiliensis blood-fed on either Columba sp., Mus m

Effect of reproductive state on active dispersal in Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) susceptible and resistant to deltamethrin.

Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) is the main vector of the Chagas´ disease in Argentina. The presence of insects in the domestic environment after application of pyrethroid insecticides was reported. The colonization and the evolution of insecticide resistance are processes that can explain these control failures. In both processes, the active dispersal of insects is a determining factor. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the reproductive state modulate the dispersal capacity of females of T. infestans susceptible and resistant to deltamethrin. For this, different variables

An insight into the salivary gland and fat body transcriptome of Panstrongylus lignarius (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), the main vector of Chagas disease in Peru.

Triatomines are hematophagous arthropod vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas Disease. Panstrongylus lignarius, also known as Panstrongylus herreri, is considered one of the most versatile triatomines because it can parasitize different hosts, it is found in different habitats and countries, it has sylvatic, peridomestic and domestic behavior and it is a very important vector of Chagas disease, especially in Peru. Molecules produced and secreted by salivary glands and fat body are considered of important adaptational value for triatomines because, among other functions, t
