Involvement of LTC4 and NADPH oxidase 5 in extracellular trap formation in Ruditapes philippinarum.

NADPH oxidase 5 (NOX5) is a calcium-dependent enzyme that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and plays critical roles in immune respons … , whereas pretreatment with pranlukast or knockdown of RpNOX5 markedly attenuated these effects. In hemocytes, LTC4 and LPS stimulation induced the release of extracellular trap (ET) structures, accompanied by elevated extracellular double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) levels. Abundant fibrous ET-like structures were observed in gills of LPS- and LTC4-treated groups …

Sequential histological changes in Biomphalaria glabrata during the course of Schistosoma mansoni infection.

Biomphalaria glabrata, highly susceptible to Schistosoma mansoni, were seen to shed less and less cercariae along the time of infection. Histological examination kept a close correlation with this changing pattern of cercarial shedding, turning an initial picture of no-reaction (tolerance) gradually into one of hemocyte proliferation with formation of focal encapsulating lesions around disintegrating sporocysts and cercariae, a change that became disseminated toward the 142nd day post miracidial exposure. Findings were suggestive of a gradual installation of acquired immunity in snails infecte

Ecotoxicological effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the freshwater mussel Lamellidens marginalis: physiological disruption, oxidative stress, and ecological implications.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are widely distributed in aquatic environments due to their extensive industrial and commercial applications. Several studies have reported the adverse effects of TiO2 NPs on aquatic organisms; however, limited information is available regarding their impact on the freshwater mussel Lamellidens marginalis. The present study investigates the physiological and biochemical responses of L. marginalis following acute exposure (7 days) to varying concentrations of TiO2 NPs (Control, 5.0, 50, and 100 µg/L). Physiological parameters, including the condition in

[Polycythemia vera terminating in myelodysplastic syndrome].

A 77-year-old male, who had been treated with carboquone and busulfan for polycythemia vera (PV), developed myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) 8 years later. On admission the peripheral blood revealed pancytopenia, but blastoid cells were not noted. The bone marrow showed hypercellularity, and functional and morphological abnormalities in trilineages of hemocytes. Cytogenetic study showed complex abnormalities involving chromosomes 5 and 7. We diagnosed this case as secondary MDS to alkylating agents. He was treated with 1, 25 (OH)2 vitamin D3. However, it was not effective and the percentage of m…

Low-dose of formalin-inactivated Vibrio alginolyticus protects Crassostrea gigas from secondary infection and confers broad-spectrum Vibrio resistance on offspring.

An increasing number of evidences have shown that invertebrate taxa can be primed to produce immune memory to resist the secondary infection of pathogens, which was considered as a viable option to protect invertebrates from pathogens. In this work, we compared the protective effect of several different immune priming methods on the Vibrio alginolyticus secondary infection of the Crassostrea gigas. The results showed that C. gigas primed with live V. alginolyticus had higher ROS level, which led to hemocytes necrosis and higher mortality rate in the later stage. Low-dose of formalin-inactivate…

Xenogeneic rejection among three botryllids (compound Ascidians).

Xenogeneic rejection was observed among colonies of three botryllids, Botryllus scalaris, Botryllus primigenus, and Botrylloides simodensis. Allogeneic recognition occurs in each of these species, but the manner of allogeneic rejection differs among them. We studied xenogeneic rejection reactions among these species under the following conditions: colony contact at natural growing edges, colony contact at artificially cut surfaces, and injection of xenogeneic blood plasma into a vascular vessel. In the first two cases, xenogeneic rejection occurred only in Botryllus primigenus and Botrylloides

Interactive effects of ocean acidification and benzophenone-3 on mussel physiology: A biomarker-based approach.

Benzophenone-3 (BP3), a widely used ultraviolet (UV) filter in personal care products and industrial applications, is an emerging concern in aquatic ecosystems due to its lipophilicity, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity to marine biota. Its occurrence in marine environments coincides with ocean acidification driven by rising atmospheric CO2 emissions, which disrupts the bicarbonate buffer system and reduces pH. This study investigated the acute effects (96 h exposure) of BP3 (at realistic concentrations of 0.2 and 2 μg/L) under 3 pH conditions (8.1- the current South Atlantic condition-

Isolation, characterization, and pathogenicity of a Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain causing translucent post-larvae disease in Penaeus vannamei outside China.

Translucent post-larvae disease (TPD) has emerged as a severe threat to shrimp aquaculture, causing substantial economic losses. The causative agent, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, has been primarily identified in China, but this study provides the first confirmed report of its presence in shrimp populations outside China. This research characterizes V. parahaemolyticus strain AG1 (VpTPD AG1), isolated from diseased Penaeus vannamei, through biochemical, molecular, and pathogenic analyses. PCR screening of VpTPD AG1 detected vhvp-1 and vhvp-2, genes previously linked to TPD virulence, while pirA/pir

Eicosanoid Signaling in Insect Immunology: New Genes and Unresolved Issues.

This paper is focused on eicosanoid signaling in insect immunology. We begin with eicosanoid biosynthesis through the actions of phospholipa … eading, hemocyte migration and releasing prophenoloxidase from oenocytoids, a class of lepidopteran hemocytes. We briefly review the relatively scant knowledge on insect PG receptors and note PGs also act in gut immunity and in humoral immunity. Detailed new information on PG actions in mosquito immunity against the malarial agent, Plasmodium berghei, has r …

A herpes-like virus in king crabs: Characterization and transmission under laboratory conditions.

A herpes-like virus was found infecting the antennal gland and bladder epithelium in the blue king crab Paralithodes platypus from the eastern area of the Sea of Okhotsk. Electron microscopic analysis of antennal gland samples from blue king crabs with histologically confirmed signs of disease revealed virus particles, which were mostly hexagonal in shape and located primarily in the nucleus; these particles were rarely observed in the cytoplasm of infected cells. Most virus particles ranged in size from 115 to 125nm. Hemocytes of the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus in cell culture co…
