Obliteration for gastric or duodenal variceal hemorrhage was performed via transileocoecal or transhepatic portal catheterization in 8 patients with portal hypertension. The patients were 6 men and 2 women, whose average age was 59 years. All of the patients had cirrhosis of the liver. The obliteration was performed as an emergency procedure in 6 cases, and 2 patients were electively treated. Transileocoecal obliteration (TIO) and transhepatic obliteration (PTO) were selected for 6, and 2 patients, respectively. In a study of severe, decompensated liver failure, we tried to find a correlation between hemorrhage and parameters of hemostasis and fibrinolysis. In a case-control study, we evaluated the effects of maternal ingestion of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) within 10 days of delivery on maternal and neonatal hemostasis. Only one of 34 control maternal-neonatal pairs (3 per cent) had hemostatic abnormalities. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global health priority. In addition to being the leading cause of trauma related death, TBI can result in long-term disability and loss of health. Disorders of haemostasis are common despite the absence of some of the traditional risk factors for coagulopathy following trauma. Similar to trauma induced coagulopathy, this manifests with a biphasic response consisting of an early hypocoagulable phase and delayed hypercoagulable state. This coagulopathy is clinically significant and associated with increased rates of haemorrhagic expansion, disability and death.
