CASE: 35-Year old male presented with acute right hip pain after a pivoting motion while playing soccer. This was a non-contact injury. Imaging revealed a posterior hip dislocation with an associated posterior wall acetabular fracture. He was treated with closed reduction of the hip followed by subsequent open reduction internal fixation of the acetabular fracture.
CONCLUSION: Posterior hip fracture dislocations can occur in adults following low energy non-contact injuries. Successful outcomes can be achieved if they are treated in a timely fashion, but unrecognized injuries can lead to devas

This study was designed to investigate the feasibility and the potential effects on walking performance of a short gait training with a novel impairment-specific hip assistance (iHA) through a bilateral active pelvis orthosis (APO) in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). Fourteen subjects capable of independent gait and exhibiting mild-to-moderate gait deficits, due to an ABI, were enrolled. Subjects presenting deficit in hip flexion and/or extension were included and divided into two groups based on the presence (group A, n = 6) or absence (group B, n = 8) of knee hyperextension during

Persistent deficits in strength and voluntary activation have been observed in athletes with a history of hamstring strain injury. The mechanisms contributing to these deficits are poorly understood and consequently may not be appropriately addressed during rehabilitation. This study aimed to investigate the impact of intended knee flexor contraction mode (concentric, eccentric or isometric) on the rate of torque development and surface electromyography (sEMG) rise in athletes with and without a history of unilateral hamstring strain injury. The impact of the previous injury on hip extensor ra

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and serious complication after hip fracture surgery in older adults. Hypoalbuminemia is a known independent risk factor for AKI. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between early postoperative hypoalbuminemia and AKI after hip fracture surgery. Therefore, we sought to determine the incidence of and risk factors for AKI and the effects of early postoperative hypoalbuminemia on AKI incidence after surgery for hip fractures, especially intertrochanteric fractures of the proximal femur.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospec

BACKGROUND: Injury prevention training has been shown to be effective in reducing the incidence of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury; however, the underlying reason for the success of these training programs is unclear.
PURPOSE: To investigate whether an ACL injury prevention program that has been shown to reduce the incidence of ACL injury alters sagittal plane hip and knee biomechanics during a drop-landing task.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: Thirty female club soccer players (age range, 11-17 years) with no history of knee injury participated in th

Gluteal compartment syndrome as a result of hematoma from a ruptured superior gluteal artery is exceedingly rare; to date, one similar case in a pelvic fracture model has been reported. We report a case of acute gluteal compartment syndrome from a ruptured superior gluteal artery resulting from a simple posterior hip dislocation in an otherwise healthy young male. Timely surgical exploration, evacuation of the hematoma, and achievement of hemostasis allowed for an excellent outcome at follow-up. We review the gluteal compartments as well as treatment protocols for this injury.

BACKGROUND: Reduced gait speed is common following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Several studies have found that people with TBI display increased lateral movement in their center of mass while walking. It has been hypothesized that reduced gait speed following TBI is a consequence of increased caution and postural instability, but reduced ankle power generation at push-off may also play a contributing role.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether postural instability or reduced muscle power were associated with reduced gait speed following TBI.
METHODS: A convenience sample of 55 people with TBI re

Vascular injuries diagnosed during the course of total hip arthroplasty (THA) implantations are rare. They must be constantly feared as they sometimes put at risk the vital and functional prognosis of the operated limb. We report the case of a common femoral artery injury diagnosed by arteriography within two days of THA replacement in the presence of atypical symptoms. The vascular damage was caused by an arterial lesion resulting from positioning a retractor on the anterior wall of the acetabulum. A literature review on the topic of vascular complications arising after THA made us aware of m

Individuals with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) often demonstrate multijoint reflex activity that is clinically classified as an extensor spasm. These responses are commonly observed in conjunction with an imposed extension movement of the hips, such as movement from a sit to a supine position. Coincidentally, afferent feedback from hip proprioceptors has also been implicated in the control of locomotion in the spinalized cat. Because of this concurrence, we postulated that extensor spasms that are triggered by hip extension might involve activation of organized interneuronal circuits that a

Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is one of the common causes of hip pain, limited range of motion, and labral injury. Without timely intervention, it may progress to hip osteoarthritis. In this study, a robot-assisted hip arthroscopy technique was adopted, which involves preoperative bony structure image reconstruction, intraoperative real-time navigation and positioning, and robotic arm-assisted anchor placement. This technique enables hip labral repair and osteochondroplasty, restores normal acetabular-femoral anatomy, and effectively addresses the shortcomings of traditional hip

Peripheral nerve injuries, such as axonal injury of the superior gluteal nerve, are rare but debilitating complications that can occur after hip arthroplasty. This case report describes the use of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat an axonal injury of the superior gluteal nerve in a 71-year-old patient. After conventional rehabilitation failed, MSC infiltration was chosen and performed with ultrasound (US) guidance. Two months later, the patient showed normalization of electromyography (EMG), indicating full nerve recovery, along with significant improvement in neuropathic

BACKGROUND: Array pin placement into the pelvis is a necessary step for robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (RATHA). Despite the increase in RATHA being performed, there is limited literature investigating safe zones and pin trajectory to avoid neurovascular injury.
METHODS: This study utilized lower extremity magnetic resonance images of nine patients. The trajectory of three array pins placed at caudal angles of 35, 45, and 55 were recreated, and each pin was divided into four equidistant zones. For each pin, the distance was determined from each zone to nearby neurovascular structures:

BACKGROUND: In National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) soccer athletes, men have higher rates of hip and groin strains, whereas women have higher rates of knee ligament injuries. Strength imbalances of the hip and thigh, specifically in agonist-antagonist muscles, are known risk factors for these injuries.
OBJECTIVE: To perform hip and thigh strength assessments in NCAA soccer players to evaluate for differences between genders and correlations with gender-specific injury patterns.
DESIGN: With a handheld dynamometer, weight-normalized isometric strength of six muscle groups (hip abd
